An Investigation Into Hybrid Models Of Mindreading: A Dual Type Theory Account, Alexandra Jewell
An Investigation Into Hybrid Models Of Mindreading: A Dual Type Theory Account, Alexandra Jewell
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Mindreading, or attributing mental states to others, involves instances of simulation and theory; but there is controversy over which one of these methods is the primary, or default, mechanism. I propose that mindreading is a theory-based process, such that we utilize theory over simulation when both are available and reliable. To argue my position, I suggest that theory has been inaccurately portrayed in past discussion and that we possess two types: a connectionist network (tt1) and a traditional, conceptual folk-psychology (tt2). By dividing theory in this way, we can explain common phenomena of mindreading that other theory-based accounts do not …

An Integrated Model Of Safer Sex Practices Among African-American Gay And Bisexual Men, Brian D. Zamboni, Isiaah Crawford, Fred B. Bryant
An Integrated Model Of Safer Sex Practices Among African-American Gay And Bisexual Men, Brian D. Zamboni, Isiaah Crawford, Fred B. Bryant
Psychology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Models of safer sex enable researchers to identify specific constructs that can be used to promote health behavior and are more effective than interventions without a theoretical base. This study tested basic and modified forms of the Theory of Reasoned Action and Information Motivation Behavioral Skills models among 151 African American gay/bisexual men. Gay socialization was added to an integrated model to see if this minority-specific contextual variable would improve the model. Self-efficacy was tested as an independent variable and a mediating variable. The results suggest that an integrated model of safer sex practices should include benefits/barriers to condom use, …
The Behavioral Analysis Of Gambling, Benjamin Witts, Anne Macaskill, Mack Costello
The Behavioral Analysis Of Gambling, Benjamin Witts, Anne Macaskill, Mack Costello
International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking
A behavioral analysis of gambling is unique among the psychologies. A behavioral analysis seeks answers to questions pertaining to the prediction and influence of gambling in terms of the individual gambler, and thus emphasis is placed on well-controlled small-n studies in which findings are generalized to other individuals. Further, the behavioral analysis of gambling is concerned with environmental and historical relations in accounting for current gambling behavior, and less of a reliance is placed on internal and hypothetical causal factors. This symposium explores two data-driven analyses of gambling behavior from a behavioral account of gambling while a third conceptual and …
Development Of Utility Theory And Utility Paradoxes, Timothy E. Dahlstrom
Development Of Utility Theory And Utility Paradoxes, Timothy E. Dahlstrom
Lawrence University Honors Projects
Since the pioneering work of von Neumann and Morgenstern in 1944 there have been many developments in Expected Utility theory. In order to explain decision making behavior economists have created increasingly broad and complex models of utility theory. This paper seeks to describe various utility models, how they model choices among ambiguous and lottery type situations, and how they respond to the Ellsberg and Allais paradoxes. This paper also attempts to communicate the historical development of utility models and provide a fresh perspective on the development of utility models.
Modeling And Testing Consumer Engagement In The U.S. Organic Food Market, John L. Anderson
Modeling And Testing Consumer Engagement In The U.S. Organic Food Market, John L. Anderson
Honors Projects
This study specifies the types of consumers that participate in the U.S. organic market and investigates their revealed preferences. I propose three theoretical consumer types – indifferent consumers, informed organic food lovers, and uninformed organic food lovers – and conduct cross-sectional and time-trend analyses utilizing organic fruit purchase data compiled by The Neilsen Company. The cross-sectional analysis is estimated with a two-stage Heckman selection model, while the time-trend analysis uses simple descriptive statistics and a differenced OLS regression technique. Households are most likely to participate in the organic fruit market if they have a well-educated white or Asian head, are …
Political Utopias Of The Renaissance: An Analysis Of Thomas More’S Utopia, Johann Valentinus Andreae’S Christianopolis, And James Harrington’S The Commonwealth Of Oceana, Brittany Page Brake
Political Utopias Of The Renaissance: An Analysis Of Thomas More’S Utopia, Johann Valentinus Andreae’S Christianopolis, And James Harrington’S The Commonwealth Of Oceana, Brittany Page Brake
Masters Theses
Utopian works have entertained generations throughout history. Much like more recent genres including science-fiction novels or movies, utopian works stimulate the mind and ultimately cause its readers to question whether an author’s design of such a place, or society, is possible in the real world. While some may perceive the purpose of utopias to be completely fantasy-driven, there is a great deal of scholarly literature that dedicates itself to proving otherwise. More specifically, many scholars argue that utopias are serious and practical, ultimately aimed at re-shaping the entire political structure of a society.
This thesis aims to understand the more …
Are Library Science Programs Preparing New Librarians? Creating A Sustainable And Vibrant Library Community, Mandi Goodsett, Amanda Koziura
Are Library Science Programs Preparing New Librarians? Creating A Sustainable And Vibrant Library Community, Mandi Goodsett, Amanda Koziura
Michael Schwartz Library Publications
Recent studies show a growing sense of frustration for new library and information science (LIS) graduates who struggle to gain employment, as well as for hiring libraries who find the skills of entry-level employee candidates to be lacking. This study endeavors to discover the origins of this troubling juxtaposition by examining the perceptions of recent LIS graduates. The researchers administered a large-scale survey with over 575 respondents, analyzed and coded the data, and compared codes using a Cohen’s kappa calculation. The responses indicate that LIS graduates feel that their LIS education would have been more valuable had it given them …

Minority Stress Theory: An Examination Of Factors Surrounding Sexual Risk Behavior Among Gay And Bisexual Men Who Use Club Drugs, Michael Dentato, Perry Halkitis, John Orwat
John Orwat
Background: Few studies have examined the impact of minority stress theory (MST) upon sexual risk behavior among gay and bisexual men using club drugs. Similar studies have focused on ethnic minorities and women; however, gay and bisexual men demonstrate greater likelihood for risk behaviors leading to HIV/AIDS. Objective: This study examines sexual risk behavior from the perspective of minority stress theory upon substance-using gay and bisexual men and their partners. Methods: Multivariable logistic regression analysis examined minority stress associations with participant sexual risk behaviors, drug use, and partner type, controlling for demographics. Results: 396 gay and 54 bisexual respondents, ages …

Wildfire Survival Plans In Theory And Practice, Christine Eriksen, Trent D. Penman, Bronwyn L. Horsey, Ross A. Bradstock
Wildfire Survival Plans In Theory And Practice, Christine Eriksen, Trent D. Penman, Bronwyn L. Horsey, Ross A. Bradstock
Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A
Bushfire survival plans are a valuable tool for residents living in fire-prone landscapes. Plans include assigning trigger points for action, roles for all household members, and alternate approaches should the original plan fail. Fire agencies advocate that residents write, practise and discuss these plans before the fire season. In this study we use a multiple-methods approach to examine the theoretical and actual application of bushfire survival plans in south-east Australia. First, we review agency advice regarding survival plans to determine the consistency, clarity and specificity of the advice. Second, an online survey of residents examines the relationships between types of …
A Self-Determination Theory Perspective On The Motivation Of Pre-Registration Nursing Students, Anita Cregan, Dana J. Perlman, Lorna Moxham
A Self-Determination Theory Perspective On The Motivation Of Pre-Registration Nursing Students, Anita Cregan, Dana J. Perlman, Lorna Moxham
Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A
Research of current and past literature has identified an increasing shortage of mental health nurses, currently employed, within the Australian healthcare system. Strikingly more alarming is the rising number of mental health consumers; both with a lived experience and those with a current mental illness. This diversity between mental health nurses and mental health consumers only serves to increase the stigma and discrimination whilst further defining the barrier consumers experience when accessing health care services. This paper investigates how an innovative clinical placement, based on personal recovery and grounded in tenets of Self-Determination Theory of human behaviour, can influence the …
Functorial Properties Of Putnam's Homology Theory For Smale Spaces, Robin J. Deeley, D. Brady Killough, Michael F. Whittaker
Functorial Properties Of Putnam's Homology Theory For Smale Spaces, Robin J. Deeley, D. Brady Killough, Michael F. Whittaker
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
We investigate functorial properties of Putnam's homology theory for Smale spaces. Our analysis shows that the addition of a conjugacy condition is necessary to ensure functoriality. Several examples are discussed that elucidate the need for our additional hypotheses. Our second main result is a natural generalization of Putnam's Pullback Lemma from shifts of finite type to non-wandering Smale spaces.
Vulnerability Analysis Of Hydrological Infrastructure To Flooding In Coastal Cities - A Graph Theory Approach, Robert Ighodaro Ogie, Tomas Holderness, Sarah Dunn, Etienne Turpin
Vulnerability Analysis Of Hydrological Infrastructure To Flooding In Coastal Cities - A Graph Theory Approach, Robert Ighodaro Ogie, Tomas Holderness, Sarah Dunn, Etienne Turpin
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
Hydrological infrastructure such as pumps and floodgates are invaluable assets for mitigating flooding in coastal cities. These infrastructure components are often vulnerable to damage or failure due to the impact of flood waters, thus exacerbating the flood hazards and causing significant loss of life and destruction to property worth billions of dollars. Hence, there is a growing need worldwide to enhance the understanding of flood vulnerability and to develop key metrics for assessing it. This study proposes an approach for measuring the vulnerability of hydrological infrastructure to flood damage in coastal cities. In this approach, a hydrological infrastructure flood vulnerability …

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers
National studies concerned with the assurance of students' language communication within higher education courses have identified several principles for leveraging change, which include an institutional wide strategy, the articulation of clear language communication outcomes at the course and subject level, the identification of subjects within courses from first year to the capstone that have a particular focus on teaching and assessing communication skills, the incorporation of English language and literacy into assessment criteria, and collaboration between discipline staff and academic language and learning staff (Arkoudis, 2012, 2014). These principles have been incorporated into an English Language Policy at one university; …
Epic And Genre: Beyond The Boundaries Of Media, Luke Arnott
Epic And Genre: Beyond The Boundaries Of Media, Luke Arnott
FIMS Publications
Noting the resurgence of popular and academic interest in epics across disparate media, this essay proposes a theory of the epic genre that transcends particular media and cultures. It seeks to reconcile discussions of the epic in Aristotle, G.W.F. Hegel, Georg Lukács, Mikhail Bakhtin, Erich Auerbach, and Northrop Frye, arguing that traditional definitions of epic narrative are instead subsets of a greater generic structure. The epic is, following Gregory Nagy and Franco Moretti, among others, a literary “super-genre” that encompasses as many other kinds of narrative as possible. The essay explains how epic narrative, disembedded from earlier oral poetry, is …
Chaos Criminology: A Critical Inquiry, Adrienne Leigh Mccarthy
Chaos Criminology: A Critical Inquiry, Adrienne Leigh Mccarthy
Online Theses and Dissertations
There has been a push since the early 1980’s for a paradigm shift in criminology from a Newtonian-based ontology to one of quantum physics. Primarily this effort has taken the form of integrating Chaos Theory into Criminology into what this thesis calls ‘Chaos Criminology’. However, with the melding of any two fields, terms and concepts need to be translated properly, which has yet to be done. In addition to proving a translation between fields, this thesis also uses a set of criteria to evaluate the effectiveness of the current use of Chaos Theory in Criminology. While the results of the …
Speaking Back To Theory: Community Development Practices In The South West Region Of Western Australia, Colleen Mary Carlon
Speaking Back To Theory: Community Development Practices In The South West Region Of Western Australia, Colleen Mary Carlon
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This thesis explores how everyday knowledge of community development practices can inform the theorising of community development in Australia. The literature of community development offers a rich source for understanding and explaining the tensions and dilemmas of collective endeavour in context, yet arguments for particular approaches to community development can serve to evaluate practice in context. In this research, however, case studies are positioned as a source of knowledge. The power of case studies lies in their ability to portray collective action and collective action is what differentiates community development from other approaches to problems. The capacity to work in …
Proximity To Children: A Geospatial Approach To Understanding The Relationship Between Fast Food And Schools, Andrew Atwong
Proximity To Children: A Geospatial Approach To Understanding The Relationship Between Fast Food And Schools, Andrew Atwong
CMC Senior Theses
In a time when Americans are waking up to the health consequences of consuming fast food, researchers have discovered that fast food restaurants seem to be located in greater concentrations near primary or secondary schools. While this phenomenon affects the food environments of some children and carries implications as to their short term and long term health (which has also been well researched), this paper focuses primarily on fast food restaurants that are within walking distance of schools. Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to integrate geospatial, business, demographic, and food quality data, I use linear regressions to examine whether and …
