In response to the challenge of maximising the effectiveness of one-shot information literacy (IL) sessions, library faculty at Lehman College experimented with the flipped classroom model. This research paper reports the results of a multi-semester quantitative study of the flipped classroom in business management and education one-shot sessions. Researchers explored two research questions: Do students in a flipped session demonstrate greater knowledge before their session than students in a control session? and Do flipped and control students demonstrate significant, positive improvement in knowledge after their session? This article introduces the American Association of Colleges and University’s (AAC& U) Value Rubrics to smaller colleges and describes how the Value Rubrics (2009) offered free to download from the AAC&U website may be used as effective assessment tools in academic and information literacy courses and programs on their campuses. This article also describe why and how a small Kansas college has proceeded to use the AAC&U Value Rubrics alongside the SAILS pre- and post-test to assess a for-credit information literacy course offered to undergraduate students.

Librarians from the A.J. Eastwood Library at Limestone College have successfully partnered with faculty in their efforts to teach students research skills. Through a variety of formats (including online class webinars, instructor-specific LibGuides, the Embedded Librarian in Blackboard and progressive research instruction sessions) as well as outreach initiatives (such as “Tea & Tidbits,” which is a monthly faculty training session, and Faculty Recognition Day), librarian-faculty collaboration is now at its highest peak. Information literacy education in Nigeria is yet to be fully developed and supported by a national standard. The paper examined librarians conceptions of information literacy in three Federal Universities in South East Nigeria and perceptions of its value for students in institutions of higher learning and draws on the implications for development of optimal formalized information literacy programmes in Nigerian universities. To address this challenge, the Marquette Raynor Memorial Libraries moved to a new instruction model for the First Year English program. The new model involved embedded librarianship and interactive Articulate Storyline tutorials pre-loaded into the Learning Management System (LMS). These new initiatives provided flexibility in teaching information literacy concepts and fostered stronger relationships between librarians and their instructors. This article describes practical steps taken in the planning of an integrated information literacy instruction linked to a course assignment for community health majors at Kingsborough Community College of the City University of New York. The library sessions integrated the Association of College and Research Libraries Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education and were based on faculty-librarian collaboration. A course outline was designed to support a step by step course project. In an effort to change the librarian-faculty collaboration culture at Nicholls State University, librarians actively sought grant opportunities to make resources available to the university which would facilitate collaboration. Nicholls was able to secure grant funding for a collaborative multidisciplinary research workshop series to promote undergraduate research. In this opinion piece the author posits that the Framework is inclusive of themes and elements that support digital literacy as well, whether it is viewed as a unique literacy or as part of the broader literacy of information literacy. 2015 marks the first year of Carleton's participation in the Research Practices Survey sponsored by the Higher Education Data Sharing Consortium (HEDS). The HEDS Consortium is comprised of a nationwide group of private colleges and universities, who collaboratively collect and share data institutional data.

The HEDS Research Practices Survey is uses the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) competency standards in information literacy to assess student information literacy as well as student research experience. The five-section survey takes roughly fifteen minutes to complete.

We test whether and how well the presence of an embedded librarian improves the quality of student research. Students in introductory-level courses tend to have very low levels of research skills and experience. Though faculty are frustrated by this lack of skills, both students and faculty tend to have only a peripheral knowledge of the role librarians can play in helping develop their research skills. In this study I ask the question: Can standardized information literacy tests help assess and benchmark the learning of information skills by Canadian law students? This study replicates an earlier study that found that a standardized test of information literacy competencies, SAILS, was not an effective measure of law student information literacy levels. By applying the same test under similar conditions to another group of law students, I found that while the test did not measure legal research competencies, it was effective in measuring basic information literacy skills in law students with often surprising results. The model is articulated in four explained phases: preparatory, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Qualitative analysis of reflective essays by first-year students in an academic skills course documented outcomes related to the Association of College and Research Libraries Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education. Student narratives showed how novices encounter the clusters of concepts described in the Framework as “Scholarship as Conversation,” “Searching as Strategic Exploration,” and “Research as Inquiry.” Assessing students’ metacognition—that is, their thinking about the learning process—revealed that they connected personal identity with academic conversations, developed strategies for exploring subject classification, and balanced persistence with help-seeking.
