Online Access To American Diocesan Archives: Current State And Lessons For Other Repositories, Colleen Hoelscher

Colleen Hoelscher

A 1997 circular letter from the Pontifical Commission for the Cultural Patrimony of the Church said that “In the mind of the Church, archives are places of memory of the Christian community and storehouses of culture for the new evangelization.” As a tool for the evangelizing mission of the Church, it is vital that diocesan archives, as the official repositories of the American Catholic Church, are accessible to scholarly researchers and other patrons. A survey of diocesan archives examined how this category of archival repository is making information about their collections available on the internet. Diocesan websites were surveyed to …

Managing The Merger Of Archives And Special Collections : Setting Our Own Agenda., Caroline Daniels, Delinda Stephens Buie, Rachel I. Howard, Elizabeth E. Reilly

Elizabeth Reilly

At the University of Louisville a merger of archives and special collections had been discussed for decades, but for a variety of reasons, always dismissed. There were practical reasons in favor of it, but there were some significant internal barriers that made it easier to keep things as they were. But in 2012 things changed. Heightened appreciation for the traditional and emerging roles of special collections in university libraries, institutional budget concerns, key retirements and gradual replacement of people resistant to change, and an inclusive approach to planning, all aligned to make the merger seem like a natural progression for …

Adding Patent Records To Clemson's Ir--Highlighting The University's Output, Andrew Wesolek, Jan Comfort, Lisa Bodenheimer, Brenda Burk

Jan Comfort

A mounting body of evidence suggests that works that are made openly available online are cited faster and more frequently. Clemson now supports this open sharing of research through its institutional repository, TigerPrints. This repository is highly optimized to attract Google and other search engine crawlers, so it makes your patents and other research highly visible on the open web. That said, nothing tops the intricate search capabilities of the library catalog. Lisa Bodenheimer, Jan Comfort, and Andy Wesolek have leveraged the benefits of both of these systems by incorporating patent records into each. Specifically, presenters outline this project from generating …

Digital Resources For Teaching With Primary Sources, Amy Chen

Amy H. Chen

Using digital resources for teaching primary source analysis can enrich pedagogy whether you are a subject specialist or a librarian by suggesting new ideas for lessons and/or supplementing those you created previously to expand their reach. Digitized holdings from national-level institutions give students the opportunity to compare and contrast local holdings with major repositories. Guides created by archivists and librarians enrich undergraduate or graduate student learning by providing different professional skill sets and vocabularies. Blogs provide the opportunity to share public scholarship while social media expands the audience for collections and scholarship even further.
