In the same way, both individual archivists and users of archives are situated in specific, often different, contexts of culture and identity. Archives are also spaces where researchers encounter sources for creating history. The most fun part of cataloging, authority control, is the identity management work performed to maintain consistent access points throughout a library's database. It is increasing in importance as metadata schemas and linked data applications evolve. In 2014, the UK Libraries Diversity Committee developed an internship program for undergraduate students who are committed to promoting diversity and multicultural awareness among UK students, staff and faculty. The first two Diversity Scholars became familiar with a variety of academic library-related functions and career options through work within a number of library areas. Over fifty years ago an historian and a library director traveled the back roads of Kentucky (USA) with a portable microfilm camera, two lights, and a dream of preserving Kentucky’s newspapers. From their ambitions arose a successful newspaper preservation program at the University of Kentucky Libraries (UKL). Librarians and classroom faculty share the common goal of developing students’ research abilities. This session will describe a collaborative approach to performance assessment of information literacy learning outcomes, one of our general education competencies. Through collaboration with faculty, we create an assessment that aligns course requirements with information literacy learning outcomes, and that can be applied across disciplines, departments, teaching formats, and class sizes. We will model the assessment process, and participants will use our rubric to score sample responses.

The University of Kentucky (UK) Libraries approved a statement in September 2013 confirming its commitment to cultivating and encouraging diversity and inclusivity in its personnel policies and in its collections, programs, and services. The library subsequently developed an Undergraduate Diversity Scholar Program to provide two students with a paid internship in the 2014/15 academic year. UK undergraduates interested in diversity issues were encouraged to apply. Applicants were evaluated based on their work experience, volunteer or service activities, recommendations from two referees, and an essay about their belief in the benefits of a diverse society. Given the proliferation of information and the lifelong importance of information literacy and critical thinking skills, librarians need to know how to best design information literacy instructional materials in order to help students locate, evaluate, and use information effectively. This poster builds upon an experimental research study conducted to determine how instructional materials designed using the I-LEARN model could increase student understanding and application of information literacy concepts. The findings from the research study show that I-LEARN can be particularly valuable in designing online course guides and provides an easy-to-use framework for developing reusable guide content.

If there is a complex web site that you use frequently, you may be able to simplify your work using web browser extensions! In this presentation I will describe a few types of browser extensions (including OpenSearch and GreaseMonkey), and give examples of how I have used them to speed up (and otherwise improve) Voyager on the web for cataloging staff, all without needing any special server access. Similar methods could be used for other web-based systems, such as Primo and Alma.

We started using the purge job to remove old patron records with SSNs, as a first step toward removing the numbers in all our patron records. With new state laws, we are trying to eliminate as many privacy issues as we can by deleting records for patrons who are not currently using the libraries. The Commonwealth of Kentucky has a statute of limitations of 5 years on small fines. We forgive fines older than 5 years by running the Fine Forgive program at the beginning of the Fall Semester each year.

The newest module in the Voyager suite, Global Data Change, allows for batch editing of bibliographic, holdings and authority records. The University of Kentucky Libraries has used this module since 2012, and will share specifics about the top ten (or so) projects that have been implemented using this module. Projects include several significant enhancements to bibliographic variable fields, including changes due to RDA implementation, record deletion, location changes after collections have been moved, the removal of obsolete information, the addition of local standard notes, and the addition of authorized access points.

Research projects have the potential to engage undergraduates in an understanding of the complexity of knowledge, but what stymies many students as they attempt to frame their research, according to Project Information Literacy's inaugural report in 2009, is an understanding of the larger context of their topics. University of Kentucky digitized materials from their chosen agency, the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The titles had already been cataloged in MARC, but they needed Dublin Core metadata for loading the data into their digital library, and also MARC for the new electronic versions, cataloging according to current RDA standards. In this talk, the presenter will describe their workflow, and some of the difficulties encountered along the way.
