Rda: Loss Of Gmd And Changes Regarding Type And Format, Robert Bothmann

The pending decision to move to RDA is still a few months away, but some libraries have already begun following RDA guidelines. AACR2’s general material designation (GMD) is not perpetuated in RDA guidelines. Instead, RDA records define the content of the expression, the medium of the manifestation, and the carrier of the manifestation. This session will discuss the changes that will occur with RDA vocabulary, the issues related to display of the vocabulary particularly as it relates to special formats, and the effect this change may have on the display in the Aleph OPAC and in MnPALS Plus.

This ninety-minute presentation will present the RDA: Resource Description and Access core elements and moving image-related elements necessary for most commercially available video recordings, including Blu-rays, DVDs, combo-packs, and streaming or digital video. Over the past century, sociocultural and technological developments have fostered the emergence of what Peterson and Kern (1996) call “omnivorous” music listeners, as well as non-hierarchical forms of categorization like tagging. Despite such trends, genre remains the primary basis for ascertaining similarity in systems with musical content, metadata, or both. Furthermore, techniques employed within many recommender systems indirectly continue to reflect genre-based categorization and taste. This paper will provide an overview of the contexts in which such trends and tensions have emerged. When creating digital collections, different methods and workflows may be considered depending on the size, amount of metadata, and who will be staffing parts of the digitization process. Feeling overwhelmed with 500+ photographs with minimal metadata, I employed an analog tactic: playing a card matching game with printed photographs. Through matching, metadata was enhanced and locations identified more efficiently than staring at a computer screen. This lightning talk will present alternative ways to employ visual literacy tactics to provide a creative, fun way to involve students and staff in creating and enhancing large digital collections.

Live for a little over two years, Lehigh Valley Health Network’s repository, LVHN Scholarly Works, has enhanced the Network’s reputation and research credibility by increasing the visibility of its scholarship. In addition to enhancing the Network’s reputation, LVHN Scholarly Works has been instrumental in saving time and easing workflows for several of its residency programs as well as for ACGME accreditation, and has even contributed to filling in missing pieces of institutional history. The University of Massachusetts Amherst Libraries established their institutional repository (IR), ScholarWorks@UMass Amherst, in 2006, and we began by systematically populating it with electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs). We currently have a little over 4,500 dissertations and theses in our IR, and they are some of the\ most highly used content in our repository. Through a partnership with the Graduate School, we collect and disseminate all of our current master’s theses and doctoral dissertations through ScholarWorks. We recently launched an ambitious project to scan all 24,000 of our print dissertations and theses and upload them to our IR. In this …
