Gaining Traction In Research Data Management Support: A Case Study, Donna O'Malley
University Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications
With the implementation of an institutional repository, librarians at the University of Vermont (UVM) began receiving inquiries about data management. In an effort to explore research data management roles for librarians at UVM the author led workshops based on Module One of the New England Collaborative Data Management Curriculum (NECDMC) with two audiences. In addition, the author consulted with faculty and staff from around the university to ascertain their support of research data management and integrate that information into the workshops. The first workshop was directed at UVM librarians and resulted in an understanding of their willingness to engage with …

Research Data Management And The Canadian Academic Library: An Organizational Consideration Of Data Management And Data Stewardship, Michael Steeleworthy
Library Publications
Research data management (RDM) has become a professional imperative for Canada’s academic librarians. Recent policy considerations by our national research funding agencies that address the ability of Canadian universities to effectively manage the massive amounts of research data they now create has helped library and university administrators recognize this gap in the research enterprise and identify RDM as a solution. RDM is not new to libraries, though. Rather, it draws on existing and evolving organizational functions in order to improve data collection, access, use, and preservation. A successful research data management service requires the skills and knowledge found in a …

Lisa A. Palmer
Objective
This analysis explores specific institutional repository (IR) data management needs of the University’s biomedical sciences doctoral students. Awareness, intentions, attitudes, and concerns about depositing, sharing and publishing supplemental ETD (electronic thesis and dissertation) research data into the library’s institutional repository eScholarship@UMMS were explored.
Methods
A data needs assessment survey focused around the Digital Curation Centre’s lifecycle model and National Science Foundation’s requirements for data management was sent to 470 students via a listserv. Information gathered from the survey and digital repository literature aided in the construction of an overarching student data curation profile and criteria for repository functionality to …

The Office of Science and Technology Policy memo of February 22, 2013, was a watershed moment in open scholarship - effectively extending the policy of open scholarship set forth by the National Institutes of Health to all major federal funding agencies. While the potential for such a sweeping mandate has been on the radar of many university libraries and research administrators, the reality of the OSTP memo has left many institutions scrambling to understand the implications for their digital infrastructures for curation of data and publications. The presenter will discuss the processes by which Carnegie Mellon University is preparing to …

This talk addresses the next big challenge for academic and libraries, data sharing of research data – not necessarily tied to journal publication. Addressing the international research landscape where funding agencies have begun to require research data management plans, the talk discusses what steps an academic institution can begin taking, the stakeholders who need to be at the table, the challenges faced, and the lessons learned thus far. The talk will also discuss what toolkits are available as well as free online resources (including courses) to help institutions move ahead toward making research data more accessible. Practical examples, including those …
