Two students from Cedarville University’s department of music and worship were awarded scholarships from McAfee Heating and Air Conditioning on December 7, 2014, during the University’s annual Christmas Concert. This year the event was sponsored by McAfee.

Kim Tavierne from Bryan, Ohio, and Cody Martin from Locust Dale, Virginia, were awarded scholarships worth $1,500 for the spring semester.

Cedarville University will add a second alumnus to the honor of U.S. Diplomat as Jerica Ward, a 2009 graduate, has been chosen for the Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship at Texas A&M University. She is one of 20 graduate students to be chosen for the prestigious fellowship.

Dr. Frank Jenista, professor of international studies, served as a diplomat for 25 years. He worked in the Philippines, Japan, Indonesia, and New Zealand.

Following in the tradition of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Cedarville University faculty and staff members joined the nation in “Giving Tuesday,” an effort to raise money for a charitable cause. In Cedarville’s case, it was for a pair of $2,500 scholarship for current students.

According to the initiative, if 65 percent of Cedarville’s faculty and staff made a financial contribution by 5 p.m. on December 2, an anonymous donor would contribute $5,000 to the University for the scholarship fund. Senator Appoints Three-Star General To Federal Commission, Mark D. Weinstein

Lt. Gen. Loren Reno, retired three-star general and dean of the school of business administration at Cedarville University, was appointed to the Federal Military Jobs Commission by Ohio Senate President Keith Faber. Reno was selected for his military service, executive leadership in federal military organizations, and leadership in higher education.

As a member of the committee, Reno will help develop and maintain an ongoing strategy for retaining military agencies. He’ll also work toward preserving private sector jobs in Ohio.

The Village Radio Theater at Cedarville University will be performing and recording a live radio script of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” at the Cedarville Opera House on December 5 at 7:30 p.m. and December 6 at 8:30 p.m.

The Cedarville University Student Government Association’s (SGA) philanthropy committee raised $10,002 for Makarios, a nonprofit school in the Dominican Republic, during SGA’s week of awareness November 3-7.

Makarios teaches students in pre-K through sixth grade in impoverished villages. “The school reaches out to help the students break the cycle of poverty through high-quality classroom instruction,” said Carissa Drum, director of the SGA philanthropy committee.

The Yellow Jackets remain among the best in Division II according to the recently released NCAA Academic Success Rate data.

CU tied for 12th nationally among 313 Division II schools in Federal Graduation Rate at 78 percent. The FGR computes the percentage of student-athletes, who earned their degree in the six-year window from the 2007-08 academic year through 2012-13.

Cedarville University’s school of pharmacy will host a pharmacy-based immunization delivery training program for pharmacists in the local area who want to become immunization certified. The training will be held on November 19 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Health Science Center.

The training will equip pharmacists with the skills necessary to become primary sources for vaccine advocacy, education, and administration.

The event will begin by educating the pharmacists about public health concerns, diseases and vaccinations. Pharmacists will be shown “how-to” videos on the vaccination process and will spend the last two hours administering vaccinations with saline.

For two forensic science students at Cedarville University, doing an internship with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is their first step in securing a dream job.

The seniors, Danielle Banks, from Lexington, Kentucky, and Mayra Chavez, from Albuquerque, New Mexico, were chosen from a national pool of applicants for the FBI’s Honors Internship Program. Both Banks and Chavez used the past summer to begin learning from practical experience with the FBI agency in their hometown. Cedarville geology and geoscience students are working on two senior projects using an Unmanned Aerial System(UAS), or a drone, as part of a partnership with Remote Intelligence, LLC., in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania.

Students at Cedarville University have been competing in cardboard canoe races for the past 20 years to launch Homecoming Weekend. This year, the competition will be held on Cedar Lake on Friday, Oct. 3 at 3 p.m.

The cardboard canoe tradition started as a class assignment for engineering students but it has evolved to include students from all different majors. A team of six Cedarville University engineering students will showcase its work at the Meeting of the Minds Conference in Detroit, Michigan, from Sept. 30 to Oct. 2.

Cedarville’s team will display its Urban Concept car that it raced in July at the Shell Eco-Marathon in Houston, Texas. Shell invited Larry Zavodney, Ph.D., senior professor of mechanical engineering, and the team to display the car and showcase the students’ design in two workshop tours on the future of urban design and mobility.
