School Counselor Advocacy With Lgbt Students: A Qualitative Study Of High School Counselor Experiences, Maria E. Gonzalez

Doctoral Dissertations

In recent years, advocacy has become a centerpiece of the school counseling profession, (American School Counseling Association (ASCA), 2005; Field, 2004). Nevertheless, there exists a dearth of empirical research on school counselor advocacy in general and virtually none as it relates to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students specifically. To begin addressing this gap in the literature, the purpose of this qualitative dissertation study was to examine the experiences of high school counselors in the southeastern United States who have served as advocates for and with LGBT students across identity groups, with a specific focus on race and class. …

Testosterone, Dominance, And Depression In Recently Married Couples, Gabriela I. Quiñones-Torres Aug 2014

Testosterone, Dominance, And Depression In Recently Married Couples, Gabriela I. Quiñones-Torres

Masters Theses

Dominance refers to the wide set of behaviors individuals engage in with the intention of achieving or maintaining social status. Considering the relevance of these behaviors in the dynamics of close relationships, this study examined relations among testosterone, dominance, and the emotional health of a total of 225 opposite sex newlywed couples. An original measure of dominance was developed that accounted for both positive and negative manifestations, as well as situational and dispositional qualities of these status-promoting behaviors. Structural equation analyses revealed that dominance behaviors predict depression for both wives and husbands, and that positive and negative aspects of dominance …

Rudd Adoption Research Program Annual Conferences

This purpose of this study was to learn how transracial adoptees (TRAs) feel about transracial adoption. Ninety-five adult Korean-born adoptees (73 female and 22 male) responded to open-ended questions about the positive and negative aspects of being transracially adopted. More adoptees felt generally positive than negative, but most had mixed feelings. Positive aspects most often cited included: being a part of two cultures; developing personal awareness, open-mindedness, and deeper understandings; and being unique. Common negative aspects included isolation from one’s adoptive and birth families and cultures; the burden of dealing with others’ assumptions and questions about transracial adoption; and identity …

Keynote: Innovations And Best Practices: Helping Adoptive Families Overcome Early Adversities, Philip Fisher

Rudd Adoption Research Program Annual Conferences

Children who have experienced foster care and adoption often have early adverse experiences that impact their development and complicate effective parenting. Dr. Fisher will discuss the effects of early stressful experiences on children's neurobiological and psychological development, highlighting the brain's plasticity over the course of development in order to maximize the effectiveness of interventions. Perhaps nowhere is this more important than in the area of adoption, where there are still very few evidence-based interventions, where many adoptive parents struggle to find appropriate services that can meet the needs of their children and families, and where there is very little state …
