Innovation Among Georgian Journalism Educators: A Network Analysis Perspective, Ana Keshelashvili
Innovation Among Georgian Journalism Educators: A Network Analysis Perspective, Ana Keshelashvili
Theses and Dissertations
Rapid developments in technology in recent years have disrupted the media’s traditional role as a main informer for citizens. The changes have challenged journalism educators worldwide, pushing them to innovate and experiment. One purpose of this dissertation is to examine adoption of innovations by journalism educators in Georgia, a small post-Soviet country with partly free media and lack of professional outlets, that has been and still is a beneficiary of Western aid for media development. Employing innovation diffusion theory and the network analysis perspective, this dissertation uses a census of journalism educators and journalism program leaders in Georgia to understand …

Redefining News In The Face Of Economic Crises: The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Transition To A Watchdog Journal, Aras Coskuntuncel
Redefining News In The Face Of Economic Crises: The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Transition To A Watchdog Journal, Aras Coskuntuncel
Theses and Dissertations
In the early 21st century, daily newspapers across the United States struggled with how to respond to economic and technological challenges. This thesis studies one newspaper's response to those challenges. Using ethnographic methods, it explores the Milwaukee (Wis.) Journal Sentinel's transition to a watchdog-centric journal. The thesis suggests that the newspaper responded to economic and technological challenges by redefining news. However, that redefinition brought with it unforeseen problems both in the practice of journalism and the product that journalists produced. The redefinition increased tensions between watchdog and beat reporters, and between older, more experienced journalists and more tech-savvy, younger journalists. …

The Diminishing Role Of The Ombudsman In American Journalism, Wade B. Hilligoss
The Diminishing Role Of The Ombudsman In American Journalism, Wade B. Hilligoss
College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Theses
News ombudsmen have been around since 1967 when two Louisville newspapers created a position that served as an independent accountability buffer between the newspapers and the publics they served. That position was called the news ombudsman. Its role was to respond to reader complaints, call out newspaper errors and explain behind-the-scenes news decisions, processes and more in a weekly or bi-weekly column in the Sunday paper. In 1970, the Washington Post created an ombudsman position and other news outlets followed over the next 30 years. The New York Times instituted its first ombudsman in 2003 after the Jason Blair plagiarism …

Leaders In Journalism Education: Administrators At Acejmc Accredited Programs And Non-Accredited Hbcu Programs Critique The Standards, Jerry Crawford
Journal of Research Initiatives
Administrators of journalism and mass communication units have had to make decisions on how they would lead their units into the future. For over 70 years, the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC) has been the agency that provided leadership in this endeavor. This study surveyed administrators of programs of accredited and also non-accredited journalism programs at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), asking them to critique and discuss their thoughts on the nine standards. Nearly unanimously the administrators agreed that accreditation, or as those not accredited stated, “best practices”, are essential. The study focused on …

(Un)Covering Suicide: The Changing Ethical Norms In Canadian Journalism, Gemma Richardson
(Un)Covering Suicide: The Changing Ethical Norms In Canadian Journalism, Gemma Richardson
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
In this integrated article dissertation, I examine media coverage of suicide in two Canadian newspapers. I seek to answer two research questions: how has media coverage of suicide changed in Canadian newspapers between the mid-19th century and 2013, and what were the standard policies and procedures in newsrooms regarding coverage of suicide during this time? Through a qualitative analysis of historical coverage and a quantitative analysis of contemporary coverage, I show how media coverage of suicide has changed. My historical analysis incorporates extensive primary research from the archives of the Globe and Mail and the Toronto Star, and …
Statistical Reasoning In Journalism Education, Sharon Dunwoody, Robert Griffin
Statistical Reasoning In Journalism Education, Sharon Dunwoody, Robert Griffin
Robert Griffin
Surveys of journalism department heads in 1997 and 2008 showed general support for the need for journalism students to reason with statistical information. Stronger support was associated, in particular, with the perception that this cognitive skill would give students an advantage in the journalism job market. However, many chairs also perceived constraints to learning, such as student inability and/or unwillingness to focus on this material and the difficulty most of their faculty would have teaching it. Some of these concerns may be more perceptual than actual.

Press Definition And The Religion Analogy, Ronnell Andersen Jones
Faculty Scholarship
n a Harvard Law Review Forum response to Professor Sonja West's symposium article, "Press Exceptionalism," Professor RonNell Andersen Jones critiques Professor West's effort to define "the press" for purposes of Press Clause exceptions and addresses the weaknesses of Professor West's analogy to Hosanna-Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church & School v. EEOC in drawing these definitional lines. The response highlights distinctions between Press Clause and Religion Clause jurisprudence and urges a more functional approach to press definition.
Seeing The World Through The Lens Of News: Pasos Al Futuro Teaches Latino High Schoolers About Media Literacy Through Hands-On Journalism
DePaul Magazine
For budding journalists in Chicago, a novel DePaul program, Pasos al Futuro, exposes Latino high schoolers to media literacy through print and broadcast assignments, making understanding the news into a fun, hands-on experience. The Pasos program falls under the Latino Media & Communication program, which focuses on an awareness and appreciation of culture through Latino-focused courses in Public Relations and Advertising, Intercultural Communication, Journalism, and Media and Cinema Studies. Pasos itself has two components: a winter symposium that serves to introduce high school students to what journalists do, and a summer workshop that lets them learn about the business firsthand.

Nowadays, it is common to say that the French press in Africa greatly contributes to the lower level of French. If true, this assertion hides a much deeper problem that concerns the act of writing and the act of reading in a non-native language. The performance of newspaper, radio or television journalists show that these writers share the same competence and face the same difficulties as the entire French-speaking population who is compelled to transmit ideas and information in a second language they do not master, or just a bit. This paper aims at understanding the reasons why non-African readers …
Manufacturing News: Exploring How Public Relations Content Is Presented As News From An Agenda-Setting Perspective, Katharine R. Gore
Manufacturing News: Exploring How Public Relations Content Is Presented As News From An Agenda-Setting Perspective, Katharine R. Gore
Journalism
This study, conducted in San Luis Obispo, California, analyzes and investigates the relationship between public relations professionals and journalists, the role of public relations in news and how often content developed by the public relations industry is later portrayed as news.
Public relations-developed content has a growing presence in news. This is due, in part to the fact that more people work in the public relations industry than do in journalism fields. There is also a symbiotic relationship between the two industries, which is confirmed by existing studies and scholarly texts.
An effort was made by the author to track …

How Can An Outdoor Company’S Public Relations Campaign Be Taken From The Local To National Level?, Devon Swanson
Journalism
The following study researches the most effective way for the outdoor startup company, Summit Outdoor Supply (S.O.S.), to take an already established local public relations campaign to the national level. This study will investigate what factors have helped other campaigns succeed for outdoor companies and what changes should be made to see S.O.S. reach that success. My goal for this project is to educate outdoor companies on how to use the most effective communication channels to reach their target audiences. The data, to support these recommendations, will come from my own experience working with a startup company paired with the …

This paper attempts to illustrate how entrepreneurial journalism is and has been shaping media. In doing so, I will first give a brief overview of how journalism has been disrupted. In chapter two, I will show how journalism schools teach future journalists to be mediapreneurs. Next, I will focus on what it takes to build a media startup by giving examples of journalistic ventures. The chapter on fundraising focuses on ways how journopreneurs can obtain seed money for their startup. Next, this paper points out why students should adopt an entrepreneurial mindset; finally, it provides a list of successful media …

Journalism Program
For a journalist, there are only a few things that can land you a job. One of those things is having a professional portfolio. That’s why the Journalism Department has its students complete a professional portfolio as part of their Honors program. The Honors Program takes work students have already completed, then asks them to revise it, or even do it again. That way, when we leave the program, we’re ready to start sending out portfolios and resumés to potential employers. My portfolio is dominated by work that I wrote for a print medium because that’s what our program focuses …
