Does The Early Bird Really Catch The Worm?: An Economic Analysis Of Application Factors For Honors Students At The University Of Connecticut, Mallika M. Winsor

Honors Scholar Theses

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to test whether application date affects the probability that an entering UConn honors freshman will graduate with Honors.

Design/methodology/approach – Utilizing 1998-2007 Honors and Office of Institutional Research data, the effect of application date is examined using an Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) model in Microsoft Excel.

Findings – Results from and OLS model controlling for measures of academic ability and ambition suggest that applying between October and January increases an incoming honors freshman’s honors graduation probability by approximately 30 percentage points each. When men participate as students in Women¿s and Gender Studies (WGS) classrooms, they undergo feminist change. They adopt more progressive understandings of gender, show greater support for feminism, and increase their involvement in antisexist activism. Male students in WGS classrooms benefit to the same degree as female students, showing similar levels of change, although they start with poorer attitudes and thus the gap between them and their female peers persists. At the same time, male students¿ presence highlights critical challenges to feminist pedagogy: gendered patterns of interaction, resistance to feminist teaching, and limitations on women¿s critical reflections on personal experience. …

All senior medical students at the University of Wollongong undertake a longitudinal integrated community-based cle rkship, supervised by experienced generalist practitioners (GPs) in a regional or ru ral community. Prior to the first clerkship, GP preceptors predicted outcomes from their relationship with the long-term students, including a more scholarly approach to clinical pract ice. This prompted exploration of preceptor post·clerkship perceptions In the light of Grigsby and Tl10rndykes (2011) recent working definition of dlnical scholarship in academic medicine.
