Living Together But Apart: Material Geographies Of Everyday Sustainability In Extended Family Households, Natascha Klocker, Chris Gibson, Erin Borger

Natascha Klocker

In the Industrialized West, ageing populations and cultural diversity-combined with rising property prices and extensive years spent in education-have been recognized as diverse factors driving increases in extended family living. At the same time, there is growing awareness that household size is inversely related to per capita resource consumption patterns, and that urgent problems of environmental sustainability are negotiated, on a day-to-day basis (and often unconsciously), at the household level. This paper explores the sustainability implications of everyday decisions to fashion, consume, and share resources around the home, through the lens of extended family households. Through interviews with extended family …

The Effect Of Different Binders On Electrochemical Properties Of Lini1/3mn1/3c1/3o2 Cathode Material In Lithium Ion Batteries, Jiantie Xu, Shulei Chou, Qinfen Gu, Hua Liu, S Dou Feb 2013

The Effect Of Different Binders On Electrochemical Properties Of Lini1/3mn1/3c1/3o2 Cathode Material In Lithium Ion Batteries, Jiantie Xu, Shulei Chou, Qinfen Gu, Hua Liu, S Dou

LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 (NMC) as a cathode material for lithium ion batteries has been synthesized by the sol-gel method. The X-ray diffraction Rietveld refinement results indicated that single-phase NMC with hexagonal layered structure was obtained. Scanning electron microscope images revealed well crystallized NMC with uniform particle size in the range of 100-200 nm. The performance of the NMC electrodes with sodium carboxylmethyl cellulose (CMC), poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), and alginate from brown algae as binders was compared. Constant current charge-discharge test results demonstrated that the NMC electrode using CMC as binder had the highest rate capability, followed by those using alginate and PVDF …

Catalytic Role Of Ge In Highly Reversible Geo2/Ge/C Nanocomposite Anode Material For Lithium Batteries, Kuok Hau Seng, Mi-Hee Park, Zai Ping Guo, Hua-Kun Liu, Jaephil Cho

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

GeO2/Ge/C anode material synthesized using a simple method involving simultaneous carbon coating and reduction by acetylene gas is composed of nanosized GeO2/Ge particles coated by a thin layer of carbon, which is also interconnected between neighboring particles to form clusters of up to 30 μm. The GeO2/Ge/C composite shows a high capacity of up to 1860 mAh/g and 1680 mAh/g at 1 C (2.1 A/g) and 10 C rates, respectively. This good electrochemical performance is related to the fact that the elemental germanium nanoparticles present in the composite increases the reversibility of the conversion reaction of GeO2. These factors have …

A Unique Sandwich-Structured C/Ge/Graphene Nanocomposite As An Anode Material For High Power Lithium Ion Batteries, Dan Li, Kuok H. Seng, Dongqi Shi, Zhixin Chen, Hua-Kun Liu, Zaiping Guo Jan 2013

A Unique Sandwich-Structured C/Ge/Graphene Nanocomposite As An Anode Material For High Power Lithium Ion Batteries, Dan Li, Kuok H. Seng, Dongqi Shi, Zhixin Chen, Hua-Kun Liu, Zaiping Guo

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A unique sandwich-structured C/Ge/graphene composite with germanium nanoparticles trapped between graphene sheets is prepared by a microwave-assisted solvothermal reaction followed by carbon coating and thermal reduction. The graphene sheets are found to be effective in hindering the growth and aggregation of GeO2 nanoparticles. More importantly, the graphene sheets, coupled with the carbon coating, can buffer the volume changes of germanium in electrochemical lithium reactions. The unique sandwich structure features a highly conductive network of carbon, which can improve both the conductivity and the structural stability of the electrode material, and exemplifies a promising strategy for the development of new high …

Gender Differences In Material, Psychological, And Social Domains Of The Income Gradient In Mortality: Implications For Policy, Peter Muennig, Meghan Kuebler, Jaeseung Kim, Dusan Todorovic, Zohn Rosen

We set out to examine the material, psychological, and sociological pathways mediating the income gradient in health and mortality. We used the 2008 General Social Survey-National Death Index dataset (N = 26,870), which contains three decades of social survey data in the US linked to thirty years of mortality follow-up. We grouped a large number of variables into 3 domains: material, psychological, and sociological using factor analysis. We then employed discrete-time hazard models to examine the extent to which these three domains mediated the income-mortality association among men and women. Overall, the gradient was weaker for females than for males. …
