The Transition To Adulthood And Independence: A Study Of Young People Leaving Residential Care, Mary Kilkenny Nov 2012

The Transition To Adulthood And Independence: A Study Of Young People Leaving Residential Care, Mary Kilkenny

Masters

The transition to adulthood is difficult for most young people. It is a time when young people make important decisions about their lives including their future education, career and living arrangements. Most young people have strong family and social networks to support them in these decisions. However, young people leaving residential care are often expected to make this transition abruptly and at a young age with no family or social networks to support them. The leaving and aftercare supports provided by the State are often not sufficient to provide for the needs of these young people leaving them at risk …

A New Civics In The Digital Age: Connecting Online And Offline Activism In Lithuania, Liepa Gust Aug 2012

A New Civics In The Digital Age: Connecting Online And Offline Activism In Lithuania, Liepa Gust

All Dissertations

Political participation is critical for the legitimacy of democracy, yet the majority of Lithuanians refrain from participating 20 years after the restoration of independence. Low rates of participation have been reinforced by adverse mass beliefs, including deep-rooted mistrust and political powerlessness. Given that the development of civic culture in a democratic Lithuania is occurring simultaneously with the spread of new information and communication technologies, Lithuania serves as an interesting case study of the potential of online spaces for facilitating participation. Empirical knowledge regarding the relationships between online engagement, civic attitudes, and offline activism would strengthen campaigns to promote democracy through …

Individual Resilience, Social Support, And Health Risk Behaviors In Adolescents And Young Adults: Study On Cross-Sectional And Longitudinal Samples, Chuong Hong Nguyen

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Resilience is considered the ability that a person gains positive achievements despite exposure to significantly adverse life conditions. However, a majority of previous research has focused on human developmental tasks or academic achievements. Evidence of resilience on health risk behaviors has not been comprehensively established yet. The purposes of this dissertation were to extend the existing literature about the stability of resilience through time, to examine how the resilience scale concurrently and prospectively predict resilience statuses, and to explore effects of Social support over a long period of lifetime. The dissertation used a secondary database from the public-use version of …

Advising To Promote Self-Authorship: Exploring Advising Strategies And Advisor Characteristics Among New Student Affairs Professionals, Emily Marx Phd May 2012

Advising To Promote Self-Authorship: Exploring Advising Strategies And Advisor Characteristics Among New Student Affairs Professionals, Emily Marx Phd

Dissertations

Self-authorship, a theory developed by Robert Kegan (1982) and applied to college students by Marcia Baxter Magolda, is the ability to internally define one's own beliefs, identity, and relationships (Baxter Magolda, 2001). People who self-author have the ability to make career, academic, relationship, and life decisions that take into consideration their own internal voice rather than relying on others' advice. The development of self-authorship has been correlated with gains in key learning outcomes, such as cognitive complexity and independence (Baxter Magolda, 2001; Pizzolato, 2008; Pizzolato & Ozaki, 2007). Achievement of self-authorship does not typically occur until after college, when young …

During the past few years, the Center for Labor Market Studies of Northeastern University has been engaged in a diverse array of research activities focused on changing labor market conditions for the teens of the nation and young adults (those 16-24 years old) from the late 1980s to the present. Employment rates for teens fell considerably from 2000 through 2004 and remained at low levels for most of the past two years despite relatively strong overall job growth. The annual average employment rates for teens in 2004 and 2005 were the lowest in the last 57 years. Among the objectives …

The Projected Summer 2007 Teen Job Outlook For The Nation's Teens And The Case For A Federally-Funded Summer Jobs Creation Program, Andrew Sum, Robert Taggart, Joseph Mclaughlin Apr 2012

The Projected Summer 2007 Teen Job Outlook For The Nation's Teens And The Case For A Federally-Funded Summer Jobs Creation Program, Andrew Sum, Robert Taggart, Joseph Mclaughlin

Andrew Sum

Following the end of the 1990s national labor market boom in early 2001, the labor market for the teens of the nation deteriorated considerably over the next four years. Employment opportunities fell far more sharply for teens than for any other age group, and they have not improved to any substantive degree over the past three years (2004-2006) despite renewed wage and salary job growth across the country. The overall teen employment rate (36.6%) in the past three years (2004-2006) was the lowest in the past 60 years.

Trends in the employment rates of the teens of the nation from the summer of 1979 through the summer of 2005 will be presented and analyzed. We will show that the summer 2005 employment rate for teens tied the summer of 2004 as the lowest on record since 1948 when the national, CPS historical employment data series for teens begins. We will supplement findings …

National Teen Summer Employment Rate Drops To New Low, Summer 2007 Lowest June-July Employment Rate For Teens In Post-World War Ii History, Black And Low Income Teens Face Bleakest Job Prospects, Andrew Sum, Joseph Mclaughlin

Andrew Sum

The labor market for the teens of the nation weakened considerably during the first six months of this year despite continued employment growth for older working age adults. The seasonally adjusted teen employment rate during the January-June period of 2007 was nearly two full percentage points below its value during the same six month period in 2006. Based on the weakening job prospects for teens, earlier this year, the Center for Labor Market Studies of Northeastern University projected that the summer job market (June-August) for the teens of the nation would likely be tied for the post-World War II historical …

Parental Divorce: Social Workers Reflect On Long-Term Effects For Young Adults, Amanda Vonbergen

Master of Social Work Clinical Research Papers

The purpose of this study was to examine the long-term effects of parental divorce on young adults from the perspective of social workers who have worked with this population. In 2002, the U.S. Census Bureau documented that one out of every two marriages ended in divorce. As children with divorced parents reach young adulthood, major concerns include thoughts of betrayal, abandonment and the fear of not being loved (Conway, Christensen & Herlihy, 2009). Eight licensed clinical social workers were interviewed to identify the common problems, needs and interventions relevant to their work with young adults who may be dealing with …

The Changing Meaning Of Marriage: An Analysis Of Contemporary Marital Attitudes Of Young Adults, Nicole Margaret Kay Mar 2012

The Changing Meaning Of Marriage: An Analysis Of Contemporary Marital Attitudes Of Young Adults, Nicole Margaret Kay

Theses and Dissertations

An interesting paradox in the literature about marriage is that despite the substantial changes to marriage over the last half century, young adults remain committed to the ideal of marriage. While changes to marriage as a social institution have been well documented, research concerning the contemporary attitudes of young adults about marriage has been limited. Even less research has focused on how these contemporary attitudes may cluster young adults into groups that have different perceptions of marriage. This study explores young single adult attitudes about marriage, and group differences in these attitudes. A quota sample (n=700) of 18-35 year-old young …

Addressing The Physical Health Challenges Impacting Young Individuals With Major Mental Illness, Ryan P. Melton Jan 2012

Addressing The Physical Health Challenges Impacting Young Individuals With Major Mental Illness, Ryan P. Melton

Regional Research Institute for Human Services

Research has found that individuals who suffer from major mental illness, such as schizophrenia, are dying on average 15-25 years earlier than those who do not suffer from schizophrenia.1 Many causes for this shortened lifespan are suspected. Those causes include: lack of access to health care, suicide, poverty, substance use and side effects from anti-psychotic medications. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has challenged mental health providers treating major mental illness to address this disturbing trend by promoting their “10x10” campaign. The goal of the campaign is to increase the lifespan of individuals who suffer from major …

Effectiveness Of An Online Personalized Feedback Intervention For Young Adult Problem Drinkers, Tracey Rocha Jan 2012

Effectiveness Of An Online Personalized Feedback Intervention For Young Adult Problem Drinkers, Tracey Rocha

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This study investigated the effectiveness of a two-component, personalized feedback intervention for reducing alcohol use among adults, aged 18-35, who meet criteria for problem drinking. All recruitment and intervention procedures were conducted over the internet. The study compared the effects of personalized social norms feedback alone, to social norms feedback plus feedback about the individual's level of risk and harm, and to an educational intervention (control group). The interaction of age with the effectiveness of each component of the intervention was also examined.
