In this time of often precarious funding at many colleges and universities, any case that can be made to illustrate how a department strategically fits into the overall university mission is not only worth merit, but an essential survival technique. This “strategic credibility” within the university is a vital form of currency in determining institution-wide resources prioritization, collaboration opportunities between organizational units, and overall direction of departments. Promoting The First Year Experience Program By Publishing Digital Student Scholarship, Erin Passehl

The First Year Experience Program at Western Oregon University partnered with Hamersly Library to digitally capture capstone projects featured at the first annual FYE Symposium. This pilot project published scholarship online that has multiple uses, including promoting student work, publicizing the FYE program, and assisting with student retention. This poster will explore the lessons learned from this partnership and how collaboration with other departments on campus, such as the Library, adds value to the First Year Experience.

The persistent and well-documented problem of health inequalities has challenged public health researchers since the relationship between income and health was first established. In the context of austerity measures leading to public-sector funding cuts, and faced with continuing, even growing, inequalities, more innovative, community-based solutions have gained prominence.

Health inequalities in many places have persisted and widened in recent years. Our own city of Glasgow serves as useful illustration, with one quarter of our citizens defined as deprived and life expectancy gaps of up to 28 years between the richest and poorest.
