The Impact Of Migrant Remittances On Economic Growth: Evidence From South Asia, Arusha V. Cooray

Incorporating migrant remittances among other variables into a growth model, and employing panel data over the 1970-2008 period, this study investigates the impact of migrant remittances on economic growth in South Asia. Migrant remittances are found to have a significant positive effect on economic growth. A significant positive interactive effect of remittances on economic growth is detected through education and financial sector development.

The impact of involuntary job displacements on the probability of divorce is analysed using discrete duration models. The analysis uses the sample of couples from the British Household Panel Survey and distinguishes between types of displacements. Results show that couples in which the husband experiences a job loss are more likely to divorce. Redundancies have small, positive, often insignificant and short-lived effects while dismissals and temporary job endings have larger positive impacts. This is consistent with the interpretation of redundancies as capturing negative income shocks while other types of job loss also convey new information about potential future earnings and …

Objective: This study investigates and provides comparative data on the relative contributions of multiple physical and psychological health conditions on work productivity. Methods: A total of 667 employees from the headquarters office of a multinational consumer goods manufacturing firm in Germany completed a purpose-designed self-report questionnaire addressing the presence of 13 common health conditions, and associated absenteeism and presenteeism. Adjustments for comorbidity and self-report bias were made using an innovative approach. Results: A total of 34.8% of participants experienced absenteeism and 78.4% experienced presenteeism for at least one health condition. Data were analyzed for a random sample of sixty-four juvenile participants who completed the program between January 1, 1977 and April, 1978 and a random sample of forty-seven juvenile participants who completed the program between May, 1978 and August, 1979. In order to assess program impact, all the juvenile participants are administered a pretest during the first JIP session and a posttest after the last session. Follow-up data on impact measures are collected six months after program completion. This paper provides a parallel investigation on the impact of board composition, board activity and ownership concentration on the performance of listed Chinese firms. We find that independent directors enhance firm performance effectively than other board factors. The frequency of shareholder meetings, rather than board meetings, is positively associated with firm value. Tradable share ownership concentration has a positive and linear relationship with firm value, while state and total share ownership concentration represent U(V) shapes. This study examined the relationship between family structure and risk factors for children’s emotional and behavioural outcomes at 9 years of age. Family structure in this study is defined as; married, separated, divorced, widowed and never married families. Three risk factors were identified from the literature; economic deprivation, maternal depression and life events. This study is a cross sectional quantitative analysis of the ‘Growing Up in Ireland’s’ child cohort (9 year olds) dataset. Cannabis use is highly prevalent among people with schizophrenia, and coupled with impaired cognition, is thought to heighten the risk of illness onset. However, while heavy cannabis use has been associated with cognitive deficits in long-term users, studies among patients with schizophrenia have been contradictory. This article consists of 2 studies. In Study I, a meta-analysis of 10 studies comprising 572 patients with established schizophrenia (with and without comorbid cannabis use) was conducted. Accurate modelling of the radio channel is often the most difficult aspect of a Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET) simulation due to the large variability present in vehicular terrain. CORNER is a propagation model that calculates path-loss in an urban terrain with a large concentration of buildings, based on the position of the transmitter and receiver on a street map. This paper proposes additions to the CORNER propagation model to take selective multi-path fading into account and investigates the performance of the GPSR routing protocol under the CORNER propagation model in a realistic city environment.
