Racial And Ethnic Disparities In Food Insufficiency: Evidence From A Statewide Probability Sample Of White, African American, American Indian, And Hispanic Infants, Yunju Nam, Jin Huang, Colleen Heflin, Michael Sherraden

This study examines racial and ethnic disparities in the experience of food insufficiency among families with infants, focusing on the roles of socioeconomic characteristics. It uses the SEED for Oklahoma Kids baseline survey data collected from a probability sample of white, African American, American Indian, and Hispanic caregivers of infants randomly selected from Oklahoma’s birth certificates. Fairlie’s extension of the Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition is employed to analyze these data. Results suggest that whites experience food insufficiency at a statistically significantly lower rate than do the three minority groups. Compositional gaps in economic and noneconomic resources are found to explain much of …

The purpose of this report is to understand the current food needs of marginalized community-members in the Bloomington-Normal area, to learn how Green Top Grocery may help improve food security among these residents, and to ascertain viable mechanisms to encourage involvement in the cooperative among a diversity of local residents. The findings are based on data from three focus groups and nine key-informant interviews conducted in the Bloomington-Normal community. In current geopolitical and geoeconomic discourses, hunger is understood as both a threat to be contained, resulting in an often severe social and spatial localization of food insecurity, and a humanitarian problem to be solved through diffuse global flows of food and other aid. The resulting scalar tensions demonstrate the potentially contradictory alignment of geopolitics and geoeconomics within processes of globalization and neoliberalization. Programming decisions by international NGOs operating in the area of development are a function of both humanitarian and pragmatic concerns. Helping communities establish sustainable agricultural cooperatives to address problems of undernutrition, for example, motivates programs implemented by NGOs in the food security sector. But NGOs are strategic actors and must also be attentive to organizational imperatives in regard to funding. These concerns relate to donor preferences and the reality that aid projects must demonstrate tangible results.
