Dentists serving children in a Head Start program attributed dental problems in preschoolers to parent feeding practices. In particular, parents' use of sippy cups and bottles promotes long exposure of teeth to sugars, causing cavities. This presentation reports the preliminary findings from a survey of feeding practices of parents whose children using a dental clinic. Holding constant child's age and other factors, Head Start parents' feeding practices differ from other parents' in several important respects. Japanese regulations have aimed to monitor night care for children since 1981, when a tragic accident took the life of a child in an unauthorized child care center. Nevertheless, concerns persist about the efficacy of the care of children outside the home during the nighttime hours. This longitudinal project assessed the development and adaptation of children who had been in night care for a period of five years. Parents and child care professionals completed surveys: The former about the home environment and their own perceptions of their experience of childrearing, and the latter about the children’s development. The present research study seeks to improve upon prior research on child social supports by using an already existing eco-map protocol to inform two interviews on child social supports. This study will help further develop an assessment for understanding child social supports and social networks. This project examines the similarities and differences between child reports of social support using: a) child interview-only protocol and b) interview-with-pictures protocol.
