Standing on the front row bleachers at the fairgrounds, I could smell acrid gasoline pluming from the exhaust pipes of 10 demolition cars about 500 feet away. My older brother aimed his camera at the line of cars, which looked like colorful beetles from where we stood.

“I can’t see anything from here,” he said. “Let’s go.”

We made our way down to the security tent nudged between the audience and the demolition ring. A man in aviators and a bright blue security jacket stood at the entrance with his arms folded.

“You can’t come back here,” he said. My …

I’m done, checked out. I graduated. Talk about a pivotal moment.

While I write this it is time for myself and many others receiving their diplomas to step into roles as accountants, engineers, teachers and such, but when this hits stands another group of students will be entering their first year. It’s a simple cycle of coming and going. Each person will create his or her own path through college and into the professional world. Sort of like a choose-your-own- ending book. This story, while individually exciting, is very common. The stories within these pages are a bit more out …

Learning To Protect And Restore: Interning At The National Oceanic And Atmospheric Administration, Sarah Idczak

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

When I started looking for internship opportunities for this past summer, I hoped to find something that was rooted in environmental policy, but that would result in real changes in communities and the environment. I also hoped that my internship would introduce me to a variety of different careers that I could pursue after graduating from Huxley College of the Environment at WWU. I applied for an internship at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration knowing that working there would offer the rewarding and challenging experience I was looking for.

My learning objectives at the beginning of my internship were …

College of the Environment Graduate and Undergraduate Publications

The objective of the Birch Bay Shoreline Enhancement Project is to enrich the Central and North Birch Bay community by creating better access to the shoreline and beachfront area, constructing a pathway, and widening of the beach to help with flood control, aesthetics, ecosystem function, and sustainability. This will be accomplished by bettering the roadways and creating a pedestrian and bike friendly pathway that will run between the water and Birch Bay Drive. The project will focus on two specific areas--The Central Reach and The Cottonwood Reach. These are separate, as most of the intensive waterside and landside improvements will …

Undergraduate research (UR) programs attract highly motivated students who often continue on to graduate/professional schools but may lack necessary information literacy skills. Collaboration with UR programs provides librarians new opportunities to help students develop these skills and work with specialized collections in the context of a research experience. In this webinar, librarians and UR administrators share their experiences in forging collaborations based on UR and library training resources, explain how information literacy skills programming has been embedded into UR, and demonstrate how this partnership has led to greater visibility of library services, collections and UR among all undergraduates.

Dear reader, “Jump!” “Do it! Go!” “Jump!” She jumped. The river was flowing slowly about 50 feet below. In the brief instance of free fall before she splashed into the water she was free from all havoc, just herself and the summer breeze. Then she hit the water, and the rocks just below the surface.

In a jump she had made numerous times before she made one little error and landed in an area quite a bit shallower than the usual splash zone. Both of her legs broke on impact. Friends were able to pull her from the river. As …

“Time is of the essence” “A Wrinkle in Time” “Times Like These” “Killing time” Whether in contract law, classic literature, pop culture or everyday idiomatic expression, it cannot be denied – time is ever-present.

Commonly used as a measuring system to sequence events and to quantify rates of change, the passing of time can vary from person to person and situation to situation.

For me, with 10 days until graduation, the saying “time flies when you’re having fun” could not be more true. It’s times like these that I can’t help but think about the different events in our lives …

Disneyomatics: Media, Branding, And Urban Space In Post-Katrina New Orleans, Helen Morgan Parmett Feb 2012

Disneyomatics: Media, Branding, And Urban Space In Post-Katrina New Orleans, Helen Morgan Parmett

Communication Studies

Following the events of Hurricane Katrina, the Walt Disney Company took on New Orleans as a special philanthropic project. For many citizens of New Orleans, Disney's active role and its consequent partnership with the city is highly problematic, as evidenced by a spate of newspaper articles after Katrina that expressed fears about the rebuilding leading to the potential "Disneyfication" of the city. Citizens fear Disney will turn the city into something like Times Square-a space emptied of its former meanings and histories and rearticulated to Disney's sanitized family brand, marked by racial, class, and sexual exclusions. Thus, in New Orleans, …

An Andragogical Approach To Developing Dialogic Learning Through Wikis, Brian J. Bowe, Jennifer Hoewe, Geri Alumit Zeldes

Journalism Faculty Publications

This article examines the effectiveness of using wikis for collaborative projects in college journalism classrooms, with the principles of andragogy as a framework. The use of wikis in two journalism courses at a large university in the American Midwest illustrates how wikis can encourage learners to become more self-directed by engaging in online collaborative writing about how best to produce reports about diverse populations. Two case studies are related to journalistic best practices in the coverage of two sensitive topics: Islam and immigration. The content of these wikis was compiled into best-practices documents that informed the students’ subsequent coursework. The …

It is in our nature as humans to assume that weakness, in its most literal form, insinuates disadvantage or fault; almost instinctively, our minds seem to formulate the dichotomy between weakness and strength.

We each have our own intellectual, physical and emotional attributes that define our personal singularity. Varying connotations of the word “weak” stand as one such example of our uniqueness and variety, yet despite these different interpretations, we all experience weakness in one way or another.

In this issue of Klipsun, you’ll read that for some, weakness is indulging in our guiltiest pleasures – which may mean secretly …

Encounters Of A Conflict Tourist: Concept And A Case Study Of Northern Ireland, Kenneth Elvig Jan 2012

Encounters Of A Conflict Tourist: Concept And A Case Study Of Northern Ireland, Kenneth Elvig

Occam's Razor

International tourism is a broad and diverse industry that caters to several kinds of tourists. Traditionally, international tourists travel to “must see" destinations, and go through rituals of tourism such as snapping pictures, touring museums, and buying souvenirs. In recent years, newer forms of tourism have emerged such as ecotourism, community-based tourism, and other “alternative or non-traditional forms of tourism. One new, but uncommon, form of tourism is based on conflict. Conflict tourism is a form of dark tourism (tourism relating to death, disaster, destruction, etc.) where the tourist travels to current conflict areas or areas where conflict has occurred. In …

Backwards By Design Assessment Project, Linda Keeler Jan 2012

Backwards By Design Assessment Project, Linda Keeler

Backward by Design Mini-Studies

Currently, KIN 321 Sociology of Sport is the only sociocultural class in the kinesiology program and perhaps, one of the only sociology courses that kinesiology students will ever take. It is quite common that a sport sociology course is the first (and unfortunately only) upper class course that forces the students to critically analyze the underpinnings and values of the sport institution in which many are working so hard to promote. Since the class is approached from a conflict theorist approach (i.e., what I like to call the nitpick theory) and often challenges long held beliefs, a key threshold concept …

Using Service-Learning To Teach Threshold Concepts, Helen Morgan Parmett

Backward by Design Mini-Studies

The course I chose to focus on for the Backwards by Design retreat and for this particular study is Communication 244: Advocacy through Media. This course enjoins students to critically consider how media can be used as a tool to advocate for social and political change, and, especially for social justice. Students engage with scholarly and activist literature on theories of media, social change, and advocacy as well as case studies of media makers who intervene in the process of social change. Students’ critical acumen is sharpened through participating in a service-learning project, where students learn how to apply theories …

Ir Workflow Management System Using Web Of Science And Refworks, Jenny K. Oleen Jan 2012

Ir Workflow Management System Using Web Of Science And Refworks, Jenny K. Oleen

Western Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

A major component of OA outreach at Kansas State University is using updates from Web of Science to identify recent articles authored by KSU faculty. We contact authors individually via e-mail and invite them to deposit the article in our IR, the K-State Research Exchange. By contacting authors when the article is first published, we have greater success in obtaining their final manuscript, if required for deposit.

The Library does the entire deposit on behalf of faculty and uses an account from the university-wide RefWorks license to manage the deposit workflow. Refworks has several features that lend itself to this …

College of the Environment Graduate and Undergraduate Publications

The purpose of this Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is to evaluate the potential impacts of future mineral extraction for the 280 acre expansion of MRL designation and zoning overlay, proposed for amendment within the Whatcom County Comprehensive Plan and Zoning Map. If the amendments were to be accepted, the 280 acre expansion will be mined for gravel and aggregate by Burlington based company, Concrete Nor'West. This EIA investigates the environmental impacts associated with the proposed action, an alternative action and again for a no action alternative. Impact analysis has been performed in accordance with the State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA). …

Galbraith Mountain Wind Power Proposal: Environmental Impact Assessment, Zane Beal, Sean Jobes, Anna Herbel, Jaime Liljegren, Steffi Nuerenberg

College of the Environment Graduate and Undergraduate Publications

Around the world, wind energy is becoming an increasingly popular renewable alternative to fossil fuels. The U.S alone has installed roughly 35% of the world's wind capacity over the past four years, a capacity double that of recent coal and nuclear installation combined. Washington State's total amount of installed wind capacity is among the top five in the country (AWEA, 2011). Cascade Community Wind has acquired a conditional use permit to construct the first large, 2.5-megawatt wind turbine in Whatcom County on Galbraith Mountain, near Bellingham, Washington. The 2.5 megawatts of wind capacity is expected to provide enough energy to …

Cherry Point Coal Trains: Environmental Impact Assessment, Sarah Brownell, Kirsten Miller, Stephen O'Guin, Matthew Reider, Sarah Ward

College of the Environment Graduate and Undergraduate Publications

The purpose of this environmental impact assessment (EIA) is to determine the potential environmental effects of increasing the amount of coal trains passing through Whatcom County if the Gateway Pacific Terminal site were to be approved at the Cherry Point, Whatcom County location (Figure 1.2a). This document addresses the environmental impacts train traffic associated with of the Gateway Pacific Terminal's proposed construction project at Cherry Point in Whatcom County, which would increase the amount of coal train traffic passing through Whatcom County by about 18 additional trains each day. The environmental impact assessment includes detailed sections on the existing conditions …
