ICT for Poverty Alleviation in Pacific Island Nations: Study of ICTs4D in Fiji There has been a vague and little knowledge on the role or potential of Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) in relation to addressing poverty in Fiji. Western Libraries and Ingram Content Group worked together to establish a Patron Driven Acquisition (PDA) program that has been incorporated into the regular acquisitions workflow at Western. Some features of the program include: all titles selected for addition to the PDA collection are filtered through the approval profiles established by the librarians, the library’s holdings are uploaded to Ingram weekly so that duplicate titles are avoided, invoices for purchased PDA titles are sent weekly and holdings for un-purchased and purchased PDA records are updated weekly. Western Libraries, an academic library with an FTE of 34,000, and Ingram Coutts, have worked together to implement an e-preferred Patron Driven Acquisition (PDA) program at Western Libraries. This implementation has required collaboration between Coutts and Western Libraries collection librarians to develop effective profiles. These profiles allow the PDA collection to be filtered according to subject and non-subject parameters. There are several aspects of this project that make it unique. First, every e-book that is selected by a PDA-preferred profile will automatically be loaded into the catalogue for PDA. Patrons will trigger a purchase if the book is accessed twice. …

Provision Of Pandemic Disease Information By Health Sciences Librarians: A Multisite Comparative Case Series., Robin Featherstone, Gabriel Boldt, Nazi Torabi, Shauna-Lee Konrad

Objective: The research provides an understanding of pandemic information needs and informs professional development initiatives for librarians in disaster medicine. Methods: Utilizing a multisite, comparative case series design, the researchers conducted semi-structured interviews and examined supplementary materials in the form of organizational documents, correspondence, and websites to create a complete picture of each case. The rigor of the case series was ensured through data and investigator triangulation. Interview transcripts were coded using NVivo to identify common themes and points of comparison. Results: Comparison of the four cases revealed a distinct difference between “client-initiated” and “librarian-initiated” provision of pandemic information. Librarian-initiated …

Pharmacy Practice Laboratory (PPL) Course Series are required courses for PharmD students to practice the use of scientific and clinical knowledge in providing pharmaceutical care. The course meets three times per week for a lecture followed by a discussion session and a laboratory session. This poster describes the author’s first-year experience of teaching PubMed in this unique format. During Spring 2012, the author’s role in PPL was focused on PubMed. To prepare for PPL, the author attended planning meetings, evaluated students’ previous knowledge of PubMed, and investigated the teaching facilities. This article discusses a recent oral history project conducted by the University Archives, Iowa State University Library, which documents students' campus experience and concentrates on the university's annual celebration, VEISHEA. By focusing on current students, the University Archives has been able to actively document student life and become better aware of the numerous student activities on campus. The project has enabled the archives to build bridges to previously undocumented student groups. The contact through these interviews has led to the donation of records from these groups, and has made these students more conscious of their role in the university's history …

This article describes the fundamental challenges to data curation, how these challenges may be compounded for smaller institutions, and how data management is an essential and manageable component of data curation. Data curation is often discussed within the confines of large, research universities. As a result, master’s and baccalaureate institutions may be left with the impression that they cannot engage with data curation. Borrow Or Buy? Cost-Effective Delivery Of Monographs, James Van Fleet, Jennifer Clarke

In an effort to reduce Interlibrary borrowing activity, while enhancing the Library collection, the Bertrand Library has initiated a program to purchase current monographs requested through ILL by Bucknell University students and faculty. The results have been a successful reduction in ILL workload, and a cost-effective means of document delivery as measured by average delivery time, cost-per-title, processing costs, and circulation statistics. This procedure reflects an overall change in our philosophy concerning document access and delivery, which led to the reorganization of ILL services and staff in the Bertrand Library.
