Religious Liberty In The Early American Republic, Steven A. Samson
Religious Liberty In The Early American Republic, Steven A. Samson
Faculty Publications and Presentations
The early nineteenth century in America was a period in which the idea of religious liberty came to be worked out in practice in a setting of growing diversity. The immediate effect of the dissolution of state religious establishments was to strengthen the vitality and prestige of the churches themselves. Before the end of the century, the church historian Philip Schaff could regard as normal ‘a free church in a free state, or a selfsupporting and self-governing Christianity in independent but friendly relation to the civil government.’
States' Rights Apogee, 1760-1840, Ryan Setliff
States' Rights Apogee, 1760-1840, Ryan Setliff
Masters Theses
America's states' rights tradition has held much influence since the ratification of the U.S. Constitution in 1788. In late 1798, in response to the Federalist administration's adoption of the Alien and Sedition Acts, the Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions were formally adopted by the legislatures of Virginia and Kentucky respectively. These resolutions set a lasting precedent for state interposition and nullification. As well concurrence with these doctrines can be found in the Virginia Resolves of 1790, the constitutional debates of 1787-1790, and all throughout the colonial-revolutionary period of the 1760s to 1780s. In time, the Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions would gain …

The February Revolution Of 2011: A Harbinger Of Arab Spring, Steven A. Samson
The February Revolution Of 2011: A Harbinger Of Arab Spring, Steven A. Samson
Faculty Publications and Presentations
Behold Arab Spring! Nature abhors political vacuums. Machiavelli himself recognized the brutal nature of what is apt to fill such a vacuum. Abraham Lincoln anticipated this problem even in America in his early Lyceum Address by envisioning the rise of an American Napoleon. The question is whether the willingness to sacrifice for the sake of a cause measures up to or falls far short of the worthiness of the cause itself.
The Crisis Of Our Age: An Update, Steven A. Samson
The Crisis Of Our Age: An Update, Steven A. Samson
Faculty Publications and Presentations
John Calvin recognized the moral hazard that arises when people are induced to act contrary to their consciences. Perhaps all the buzzing, blooming confusion of our modern media culture has become simply a mechanism for demoralizing the population, by making all of us accomplices in people’s bad behavior, by assaulting, weakening, and gradually undermining our moral defenses. As David Chilton characterized it: “If this is a culture, it belongs in a Petri dish.” People with bad consciences are more easily manipulated as they become fatalistic and slavish in their attitudes.

A Forecast For The Middle East: The Reemergence Of An Islamic Caliphate In The Midst Of The Arab Spring, Jennifer M. Basselgia
Senior Honors Theses
The Middle East region is inherently volatile and associated with radical religious behavior. Beginning in December of 2010, a Tunisian street vendor inspired a wave of revolutions and protests launched by the people of many Middle Eastern countries, demanding regime change and democratic ideals. This season of revolution, dubbed the Arab Spring, has been characterized as both a period of Enlightenment in the Arab world and a cause for concern for Western powers.
This thesis will approach the Arab Spring in light of the ideologies and influences swarming into the power vacuum left by the recently deposed governments. It will …

Bears, Baby Carrots, And The Colbert Bump: An Analysis On Stephen Colbert's Use Of Humor To Set The Public's Political Agenda, Dominique Mckay
Masters Theses
In recent years, political satire has risen in popularity and recognition as an effective means of transmitting political news to a younger generation of voters. This recent development brings forth new questions about the role of political satire in setting the public's political agenda. Using Agenda-Setting Theory as a framework, this study takes The Colbert Report, one of the most popular satire television shows of this generation, and analyzes it for a possible political agenda. In the end, what this study finds is that in the six weeks leading up to the 2008 U.S. presidential election The Colbert Report chose …
