Data Curation Is For Everyone! The Case For Master's And Baccalaureate Institutional Engagement With Data Curation, Yasmeen Shorish

Libraries

This article describes the fundamental challenges to data curation, how these challenges may be compounded for smaller institutions, and how data management is an essential and manageable component of data curation. Data curation is often discussed within the confines of large research universities. As a result, master's and baccalaureate institutions may be left with the impression that they cannot engage with data curation. However, by proactively engaging with faculty, libraries of all sizes can build closer relationships and help educate faculty on data documentation and organizational best practices. This article describes experiences from one master's comprehensive institution as it engages …

Leveraging Emerging Technology To Visually Promote Library Resources, Carolyn Schubert May 2012

Leveraging Emerging Technology To Visually Promote Library Resources, Carolyn Schubert

Libraries

Objectives: Use emerging technologies to create and deploy a virtual bookshelf of new books to increase circulation. Previous studies completed by the library have documented the increased circulation of materials upon creation of themed physical book displays.

Methods: Currently, visitors can setup an RSS feed for each month's new listing of title. However, circulation of materials remains low. Therefore, I will use virtual bookshelf technology with graphics, such as LibraryThing book covers, to promote new monographic materials for the health sciences and nursing departments. The virtual bookshelf will appear on the home page of the health sciences and …

Usability Test Results For A Discovery Tool In An Academic Library, Jody C. Fagan, Meris A. Mandernach, Carl S. Nelson, Jonathan R. Paulo, Grover Saunders

Libraries

Discovery tools are emerging in libraries. These tools offer library patrons the ability to concurrently search the library catalog and journal articles. While vendors rush to provide feature-rich interfaces and access to as much content as possible, librarians wonder about the usefulness of these tools to library patrons. In order to learn about both the utility and usability of EBSCO Discovery Service, James Madison University conducted a usability test with eight students and two faculty members. The test consisted of nine tasks focused on common patron requests or related to the utility of specific discovery tool features. Software recorded participants’ …

The Effectiveness Of Academic Library Deans And Directors : A Literature Review, Jody Condit Fagan

Libraries

As with other organizations in higher education, academic libraries face increasing pressure to assess their work and be more accountable for returns on investment. Although most academic library deans are subject to some type of internal performance review, a broader examination of what makes library deans and directors effective could provide valuable guidance for current and future library leaders. This article reviews some of the core theories of leadership effectiveness in the mainstream management literature and examines recent publications related to effective library leadership. Because few such studies have been conducted, the review was expanded to include studies of academic …
