Local Or Global? Making Sense Of The Data Sharing Imperative, Christine L. Borgman Apr 2012

Local Or Global? Making Sense Of The Data Sharing Imperative, Christine L. Borgman

Christine L. Borgman

The deluge of research data has excited researchers, policy makers and the general public with the possibilities for exploring problems from climate to culture. Yet the very definition of “data” is contested, and determining whether something is “independently understandable” is problematic. Data rarely are simple objects that can be easily shared; rather they embody the epistemological perspectives of their creators/collectors/producers/authors. This talk will explore the matches and mismatches of motivations, interests and incentives of stakeholders in research data.

Data Curation Education In Research Centers Poster, Christopher Eaker, Erica Johns, Kayla Siddell

School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works

The volume of scientific data is growing exponentially across all scientific disciplines. Competent information professionals are needed to sort, catalog, store, and retrieve this data for future research and education requirements. In response to this need, the goal of the Data Curation Education in Research Centers (DCERC) project is to develop curriculum to educate information science students in the critical field of scientific data curation. Three masters degree students at University of Tennessee (UT) and three doctoral students at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign are completing year one of the program. Each brings to the field of data curation skills …

Managing Research Data : A Collaborative Approach, Darren Gibson, Julia Gross, Matthew Wyatt Jan 2012

Managing Research Data : A Collaborative Approach, Darren Gibson, Julia Gross, Matthew Wyatt

Research outputs 2011

To ensure maximum benefit is achieved from the investigations in a collaborative research network, it is essential that research data is managed effectively. However, there is no set model to follow. Normally an institution will establish its own policy and procedures applicable to their researchers and data. This causes difficulties for researchers sharing data across a collaborative network. Edith Cowan University (ECU) is one of fifteen Australian universities striving to create world-class research capacity and capability through investment in the Collaborative Research Network (CRN) project. The CRN project at ECU aims to accelerate the growth of research activity from 2011 …
