We're All In This Together: Supporting The Dissemination Of University Research Through Library Services, Michelle Armstrong

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

One of the primary functions of universities is the discovery and dissemination of new knowledge. Yet, most institutions only focus on supporting faculty in the initial discovery process, requiring researchers to fend for themselves when sharing their work. Institutional repositories (IRs) have a unique opportunity to expand traditional library services by supporting the dissemination of university research. Thinking beyond archiving graduate theses and faculty publications, librarians are developing new IR services which can assist faculty in a variety of ways. Managing researcher pages, consulting on copyright transfer agreements, exchanging publication information with other university stakeholders, even launching library-based publishing services …

Protecting Author Rights: How Copyright Transfer Agreements Impact Faculty Scholarship, Michelle Armstrong

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

Journal publisher's copyright policies can vary greatly, leaving authors at a tremendous disadvantage when managing their publishing activities. Not only are copyright transfer agreements confusing, they can also use misleading or threatening language. Because of this, professors often feel that they will not be able to publish their work unless they sign the agreement. Additionally, many faculty are not aware of their author rights or other ways that their work be could disseminated. This is particularly concerning for research that is supported through taxpayer money. Publications resulting from federal grants are often only accessible to individuals affiliated with a university …

Institutional Repository Management Models That Support Faculty Research Dissemination, Michelle Armstrong Oct 2012

Institutional Repository Management Models That Support Faculty Research Dissemination, Michelle Armstrong

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

When promoting institutional repositories (IRs), there is often a disconnect between librarians and their faculty. Emphasizing escalating journal prices, open access mandates, and collection building, librarians tend to approach faculty scholarship as an organizational resource to be managed. In contrast, faculty are often focused on issues such as tenure, career development, and academic freedom. Their scholarship is a personal activity which represents their accomplishments. Unless librarians consciously work to bridge this values gap, institutional repositories can flounder, sitting empty and underutilized.

One of the most successful approaches for librarians when addressing these issues has been to implement a mediated deposit …

Troublesome Concepts And Information Literacy: Investigating Threshold Concepts For Il Instruction, Amy R. Hofer, Lori Townsend, Korey Brunetti

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

Librarians regularly encounter students who struggle to understand and apply information literacy concepts. A qualitative survey administered to information literacy practitioners asked about troublesome content and analyzed results using the threshold concepts pedagogical framework first described by Jan Meyer and Ray Land. A threshold concept transforms the learner’s view of content and helps integrate previously learned material; threshold concepts are portals that, once traversed, bring insight into how to think and act like a practitioner within a discipline. This project uses the data collected to propose seven threshold concepts for information literacy.

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

This PowerPoint describes the Analyze, Search, Evaluate (ASE) model for building a research strategy. This pedagogical model was field tested by Dr. Melissa Gross and Dr. Don Latham in a large, IMLS funded study of Florida college students who were targeted for remedial instruction regarding research skills and information literacy. Using this method at the Portland State University Library in research classes for freshman and international students, I have found the ASE research model to be an engaging way to organize an hour library class so that students learn an efficient and easy way to construct their research strategies.

What Do We Do And Why Do We Do It?, Emily Ford Aug 2012

What Do We Do And Why Do We Do It?, Emily Ford

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

The library community should develop a philosophy of librarianship. In order to do so the community should engage in a dialogue about what we do and why we do it. Our history with the idea of a philosophy of librarianship is long, yet the library community hasn’t resolved the problem of what that philosophy (or philosophies) should be. Engaging in a reflective and philosophically-based practice of librarianship (a praxis of librarianship), one that frames decision-making and library work with the question: “what we do and why we do it?” will enable the library community to have successful conversations with those …

'It’S Research Made Easier!': Sms And Chat Reference Perceptions, Margie Ruppel, Amy Vecchione

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

The convergence of college students' information needs, social characteristics, and technological skills have always defined academic library services. Academic libraries re-shape and expand library services in order to match college students with their preferred mode of communication at their point-of-need. This is especially evident in the current offerings of multiple mediums for research help and mobile-friendly web sites. As Rettig pointed out in 2003, college students' familiarity and confidence with information technology has created expectations of immediacy, interactivity, personalization, and mobility.

Chat reference and text messaging reference services present efficient, personalized methods for connecting with college students. Text messaging, also …

Collaboration with other campus departments and an entrepreneurial spirit were essential for many of these efforts. First, the library developed a list of desired improvements and space use ideas. Then, the library used a phased approach, taking advantage of opportunities and planning for others as possible, resulting in a series of high-impact space updates. PSU Library offers a space-planning model that allows academic libraries to be agile, entrepreneurial, and collaborative, and to improve learning spaces in a difficult …

Research guide software enables librarians without web design skills to quickly and easily create and update web content. The technologies for creating research guides run the gamut from proprietary and open source software specifically designed for creating guides to open source and third-party-hosted applications …
