Can Consortial Reference Partners Answer Your Local Users’ Library Questions?, Bradley Wade Bishop
Can Consortial Reference Partners Answer Your Local Users’ Library Questions?, Bradley Wade Bishop
Information Science Faculty Publications
The purpose of this article is to explore location-based questions as a weakness of virtual reference consortia and discuss how to mitigate related issues. Content analysis of how both local and non-local academic librarians responded to location-based questions provides insight into considerations academic libraries must make when participating in a virtual reference consortia. Unobtrusive testing analyzed the local knowledge assumption that non-local librarians have difficulty answering questions about libraries beyond their own. The results from these two methods indicate academic librarians have some difficulties providing responses to library location-based questions and a discussion on overcoming this weakness is included.

Library Presentations
Guidebooks, art, archival inventories, drama, public buildings, and road construction come to mind as unique chapters of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) program during depression-era U.S. history. This session will explain what it means for the University of Kentucky Libraries to be designated as an ASERL Center for Excellence for WPA publications. It will highlight key WPA publications with emphasis on public access, both print and electronic, as well as UK’s efforts to promote the collection.

Revitalization Of The School Library Media Specialist Certification Program At The University Of Kentucky: Preparing 21st Century School Library Technology Leaders, Melissa P. Johnston, Jeffrey Huber, Jennifer Dupuis, Dan O'Hair, Mary John O'Hair, Rosetta Sandidge
Information Science Faculty Publications
In 2010 due to decreased enrollment and university-wide budget cuts, the University of Kentucky School of Library and Information Science made the decision to suspend admission to the School Library Media Certification program. The Kentucky librarian community responded with a campaign to request that this program be reinstated since the University of Kentucky is the only university in Kentucky offering a school library media preparation program within an American Library Association-accredited master's program. As a result, a committee of experts was formed to examine the status of the school library media profession in the state of Kentucky, collect and analyze …

Ebookmobile: Delivering Subject-Specific Ebooks To Your Inbox, Kathryn Lybarger
Library Presentations
Today's users are overloaded by the massive amount of information available to them, even within their own library's collection. Ebooks cataloged in batches of hundreds (or thousands) make a generic new ebook shelf prohibitively large and mostly uninteresting to a subject researcher. The Ebookmobile helps researchers become aware of new ebooks in the library collection in their specific area of interest, so they can start using them immediately. Ebookmobile checks the Voyager database daily for newly cataloged ebooks and creates feeds for ranges in a classification scheme. Researchers can choose to receive a daily e-mail or subscribe to an RSS …

Will An Institutional Repository Hurt My Ssrn Ranking? Calming The Faculty Fear, James M. Donovan, Carol A. Watson
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
Faculty members should not view the institutional repository as a drain on their SSRN rankings. While SSRN excels at delivering their work to the cadre of legal specialists, IRs typically do a better job of presenting it to a broader readership. This expanded exposure should be judged a
positive benefit of participation in the IR, helping to mitigate criticisms of law faculty as sequestered, insular, and writing only for themselves. Anyone interested in giving their ideas the widest possible hearing should deposit their intellectual work in as many venues as possible. For law professors, this means they should have both …

Available literature on teaching evidence-based medicine (EBM) to medical students focuses on teaching critical appraisal skills, often in the context of a journal club, workshops or lectures. Being able to utilize EBM effectively means that a learner is able to take a clinical scenario, develop a clinically relevant question, search for the evidence, appraise that evidence, and apply the results of this appraisal back to the individual patient. Hence EBM activity is more likely to become a part of clinical decision-making if medical students practice the skills in the context of direct patient care.
