Storage facilities for library materials can range from a small room within a library to specially constructed high density remote storage facilities. This poster session will consider the issues surrounding the efficient operation of a storage facility. Topics covered will include the selection of materials to be placed in storage, the shelving arrangement in the facility, the cataloging and relabeling of storage bound items, and the moving of materials to the storage facility. Other issues considered will be shelf-reading, shifting, security and climate control, and retrieval of storage items for patrons. The poster session will be based on Booth Library, …

Managing a repository can mean wearing a number of different management "hats": Leading the vision of the repository, supervising support staff effectively, and facilitating department and faculty content contributions. This presentation focuses on techniques from the field of technology management, including Total Quality Management, the Five Factor Model of Leadership, Facilitation Skills, and Motivational Theories of Supervision. We will introduce these theories and focus our discussions on sharing best practices for managing repository workflows and staffing.

"Where Is The Fiction Section?" Student Expectations, Faculty Needs, & Staff Involvement In Academic Library Readers' Advisory Service, Sarah L. Johnson

This presentation offers a case study on the approach taken by Booth Library, Eastern Illinois University, in regard to popular reading collections and readers' advisory work. Topics include undergraduate students' expectations for offerings in popular fiction and nonfiction in academic libraries, how recreational reading collections can support curricular needs, and how staff can become involved in collection promotion by means of training workshops, development of local exhibits and book lists, and more. Presenter notes included.

Medium to larger academic libraries often hire and train staff members to perform a variety of duties within a single department. However, in the current difficult budgetary environment, such academic libraries may use sharing of staff members between departments and cross-training in order to maintain the provision of high quality library service. This poster session will present a set of best practices for staff sharing, including scheduling and prioritizing tasks, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of such sharing from the perspectives of the supervisors and staff members. In this book, Cole attempts to establish a framework for the information searching process. Cole analyzes information need from the perspectives of both information science and computer science. Where information science considers the need as sensory (perceptual-cognitive), computer science views information need as mechanical (input-output). The book, one in the ASIST Monograph Series, is a conceptual work that presents a systematic overview of users’ information retrieval practices.

Budgets are tight, yet it remains important for library staff members to keep current with evolving technologies and improve their skills in providing services to library users. Staff development programs can spark creativity, increase motivation, and augment productivity. In these lean times, Marcia Trotta provides guidance on how to maintain library staff development opportunities. Trotta is a consultant and adult program coordinator of the Connecticut Humanities Council. She is a retired public library director and has written a number of books on library management-related issues.
