For The Benefit Of Others: Harriet Martineau: Feminist, Abolitionist And Travel Writer, Laura J. Labovitz

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

One of the distinctive and remarkable traits of Harriet Martineau was her need to publish information that she believed would benefit society. Her publications - Illustrations of Political Economy (1832), Society in America (1837) and Retrospect of Western Travel (1838) - have the distinct characteristic of being published with the intent to inform and educate the British public. Scholars have focused on her later 1848 publication, Eastern Life: Present and Past, as her most important publication. Yet I will argue that it was her earlier works which set the stage for this later, better known book. Her travel to the …

This article proposes an analysis of the island topos in Sigh by the Mauritian writer Ananda Devi. The island transcends its physical boundaries and becomes the medium of a literary discourse on slavery and its consequences in the region of the Indian Ocean. Beyond its geography, the island is transformed into a social space, a historical monument, a psychological state and a poetic writing of space. The island and the text merge into an organic novelistic fabric that we call "textile."

Rediscovering Prigg V. Pennsylvania, Andrew J. Trochanowski Jun 2011

Rediscovering Prigg V. Pennsylvania, Andrew J. Trochanowski

Honors Theses

The concept of federalism serves as the foundation for the American political system. The framers laid a foundation for balancing state and national tensions; and during the antebellum era American political actors wrestled with the proper application of these concepts. This paper traces the evolution of federalist principles beginning at the founding and culminating with the commonly misperceived Supreme Court case Prigg v. Pennsylvania by analyzing transformative historical moments and political regimes. Prigg v. Pennsylvania currently exists within contemporary political and constitutional scholarly literature as a slavery case decided upon moralistic bias and the Court’s commitment to the institution of …

Global Sex Trade And Women Trafficking In Nigeria, Rasheed O. Olaniyi Jun 2011

Global Sex Trade And Women Trafficking In Nigeria, Rasheed O. Olaniyi

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

Academic discourses and policy debates on the phenomenon of women trafficking have focused on the threat of illegal migration, migration management, and the stereotypical linkages between criminality and migration. Such themes neglected the perspectives of trafficking victims and the social context, most especially closed borders and poverty. Obviously, women trafficking constitute one of the anxieties and disruptive effects of globalization. For many women, migration across the polarized economy under the regime of globalization is associated with exploitation, criminalization, and insecurity. This paper argues that trafficking in women reflects inequality on a global scale: transfer of resources from depressed economy to …

European Colonial Terrorism And The Incorporation Of Africa Into The Capitalist World System, Asafa Jalata May 2011

European Colonial Terrorism And The Incorporation Of Africa Into The Capitalist World System, Asafa Jalata

Social Work Publications and Other Works

This article critically explores the essence and characters of European colonial terrorism and its main consequences on various African peoples during racial slavery, colonization, and incorporation into the European-dominated capitalist world system between the late 15th and 20th centuries. It employs multidimensional, comparative methods, and critical approaches to explain the dynamic interplay among social structures, human agency, and terrorism to critically understand the connections among terrorism, the emergence of globalization, and African underdevelopment. The piece focuses on four central issues: First, it conceptualizes and theorizes terrorism to clarify its roles in creating and maintaining the global system. Second, it focuses …

Conflict And Division Within The Presbyterian Church, Katie Bava May 2011

Conflict And Division Within The Presbyterian Church, Katie Bava

The Confluence (2009-2020)

Like many Protestant denominations, the Presbyterian Church split over the "peculiar institution." In St. Charles, Missouri, this division became particularly acute when it came to control of property. Katherine Bava examines a case file from the St. Charles Circuit Court that involves this division, the Loyalty Oath, and the Board of Trustees of Lindenwood Female College.

Landscape, Labor, And Practice: Slavery And Freedom At Green Castle Estate, Antigua, Samantha Anne Rebovich Jan 2011

Landscape, Labor, And Practice: Slavery And Freedom At Green Castle Estate, Antigua, Samantha Anne Rebovich

Anthropology - Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the shift from slavery to freedom in Antigua by examining the landscapes and lifeways of enslaved and free laborers at Green Castle Estate during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Taking a diachronic approach to the past, I examine the production of landscape at Green Castle Estate and in Antigua to contextualize how the social relations of slavery and freedom unfolded in this specific geography. I argue that landscape did not merely serve as a backdrop to the success of sugar in Antigua but was carefully manipulated to ensure the success of that industry on the island. Amidst …

The Door(S) Of No Return : How The Legacy Of Slavery Impacts Birth Outcomes For African American Women, Jennifer Baxendale Lally Jan 2011

The Door(S) Of No Return : How The Legacy Of Slavery Impacts Birth Outcomes For African American Women, Jennifer Baxendale Lally

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This theoretical study will explore the health disparity between the birth outcomes for white Americans and African Americans. Over the past five years there has been an increase in the literature coming out of the medical community examining this disparity. The recent interest has to do, in part, with the unresolved mystery these stark discrepancy posses. Through an exploration of historical developments beginning with the trans Atlantic slave through to the current state of African American women's reproductive health I will attempt to expand the understanding of how we as a society might better address the great imbalance in health …

The Thirteenth Amendment And Interest Convergence, William M. Carter Jr. Jan 2011

The Thirteenth Amendment And Interest Convergence, William M. Carter Jr.

Articles

The Thirteenth Amendment was intended to eliminate the institution of slavery and to eliminate the legacy of slavery. Having accomplished the former, the Amendment has only rarely been extended to the latter. The Thirteenth Amendment’s great promise therefore remains unrealized.

This Article explores the gap between the Thirteenth Amendment’s promise and its implementation. Drawing on Critical Race Theory, this Article argues that the relative underdevelopment of Thirteenth Amendment doctrine is due in part to a lack of perceived interest convergence in eliminating what the Amendment’s Framers called the “badges and incidents of slavery.” The theory of interest convergence, in its …
