Shelton Davis – Indigenous Rights And The Environment In The Amazon, Stephen Schwartzman, Jennifer Andreassen Dec 2011

Shelton Davis – Indigenous Rights And The Environment In The Amazon, Stephen Schwartzman, Jennifer Andreassen

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

This article consists of two parts, the first being a brief discussion on Schwartzman’s work with Shelton Davis in Washington, D.C.; and the second a jointly authored news report by Schwartzman, with photo images by Jennifer Andreassen documenting the continued deforestation of the Brazilian Amazon, along with mention of the Belo Monte Hydro-electric Dam, already under construction. The current situation is grotesquely reminiscent of the 1970s about which Shelton Davis wrote in detail in Victims.

Shelton Davis And "Applied Anthropology", Allan F. Burns Dec 2011

Shelton Davis And "Applied Anthropology", Allan F. Burns

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

This essay celebrates Shelton Davis’ rich and diverse career as an advocate of indigenous peoples’ rights and a major critic of mainline development models being implemented in the Third World. As an applied anthropologist, Davis rejected any division between knowledge and action in relation to indigenous and other populations directly affected by large-scale development. Through his writing and actions, he showed it was possible to maintain both objectivity and advocacy in dramatic situations such as those of the Guatemalan Mayan peoples. His contributions to community service, in founding at least two international NGOs, and his work at the World Bank, …

The Arc Of Justice: Indigenous Activism And Anthropological Intersections, Alaka Wali

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

This article discusses the intersections between anthropological and Amazonian indigenous activism over a four decade period. It takes the distinctive approach of Shelton "Sandy" Davis as a framework to demonstrate the difficult trajectories of activism for both indigenous peoples and anthropologists. I provide examples from my own experiences working with indigenous organizations in Peru and Ecuador.

Uso la perspectiva distincta de Shelton “Sandy” Davis cómo un marco lógico para demonstrar las trayectorias difíciles de activismo. Uso ejemplares de mi propio …

Sentinels And Entrepreneurs: Advocacy And Development In Brazil, Robin M. Wright Dec 2011

Sentinels And Entrepreneurs: Advocacy And Development In Brazil, Robin M. Wright

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

This article discusses, firstly, the significance of Sandy Davis’ activism for the international indigenous support movement from the 1970s through the late 1980s, and the strategies that were deployed during the global campaign in support of the Yanomami Indian Park. Secondly, it looks critically at some of the models of support for indigenous peoples being implemented in Brazil today, for the purpose of understanding what has changed in the ways indigenous support organizations develop partnerships with indigenous movements. What has changed in the way indigenous and indigenist organizations in Brazil understand their goals and the means for attaining them? What …

Indigenous Rights And Ethno-Development: The Life Of An Indigenous Organization In The Rio Negro Of Brazil, Janet M. Chernela Dec 2011

Indigenous Rights And Ethno-Development: The Life Of An Indigenous Organization In The Rio Negro Of Brazil, Janet M. Chernela

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

Following a successful campaign to end the unlawful practices of trafficking that brought them to Manaus, indigenous Tukanoan women from the Upper Rio Negro established a local indigenous organization with which to plan and manage their own ethno-development, including cultural heritage activities, institution building, revenue development, health and legal services, community, and other initiatives. The case provides an opportunity to explore indigenous ethno-development, a concept at the heart of the theory and practice of Shelton (Sandy) Davis.

The Mayan People And Sandy (Shelton) Davis: Memories Of An Engaged Anthropologist, J.P. Linstroth Dec 2011

The Mayan People And Sandy (Shelton) Davis: Memories Of An Engaged Anthropologist, J.P. Linstroth

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

The purpose of this essay is to highlight the activism of Shelton Davis and his involvement with the Mayan people during the 1980s. Of particular importance is the portrayal of an immigration hearing of nine Kanjobal Maya defendants in 1983 and the circumstances surrounding the problems of immigration in the state of Florida at that time. The article also explores how Shelton Davis helped save a village of Kaqchikel Maya in the Department of Chimaltenango, Guatemala. Of importance is how to represent varying narratives from three close colleagues of Shelton Davis to an overall conceptualization of the epistemology of narrative …

Tracking Development Of The Corpus Callosum In Fetal And Early Postnatal Baboons Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Kimberley A. Phillips, P. Kochunov Nov 2011

Tracking Development Of The Corpus Callosum In Fetal And Early Postnatal Baboons Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Kimberley A. Phillips, P. Kochunov

Psychology Faculty Research

Although the maturation of the corpus callosum (CC) can serve as a sensitive marker for normative antenatal and postnatal brain development, little is known about its development across this critical period. While high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging can provide an opportunity to examine normative brain development in humans, concerns remain over the exposure of developing fetuses to non-essential imaging. Nonhuman primates can provide a valuable model for normative brain maturation. Baboons share several important developmental characteristics with humans, including a highly orchestrated pattern of cerebral development. Developmental changes in total CC area and its subdivisions were examined across the antenatal (weeks …

Recollection Is Impaired By The Modification Of Interpretation Bias, Paula T. Hertel, Elaina Vasquez, Amanda Benbow, Megan Hughes Nov 2011

Recollection Is Impaired By The Modification Of Interpretation Bias, Paula T. Hertel, Elaina Vasquez, Amanda Benbow, Megan Hughes

Psychology Faculty Research

The interpretation paradigm of cognitive-bias modification (CBM-I) was modified with instructions used in process-dissociation procedures for the purpose of investigating processes contributing to performance on the transfer task. In Experiment 1 nonanxious students were trained to interpret ambiguous situations in either a negative or benign way (or they read nonambiguous scenarios). They were then asked to respond to new ambiguous situations in the same way as contextually similar analogues during training, or to respond differently. Benign training proactively impaired memory for negative outcomes. This effect was replicated by anxious students in Experiment 2 and discussed with respect to the assumptions …

Cognitive Bias Modification: Past Perspectives, Current Findings, And Future Applications, Paula T. Hertel, A. Mathews Nov 2011

Cognitive Bias Modification: Past Perspectives, Current Findings, And Future Applications, Paula T. Hertel, A. Mathews

Psychology Faculty Research

Research conducted within the general paradigm of Cognitive Bias Modification (CBM) reveals that emotional biases in attention, interpretation, and memory are not merely associated with emotional disorders but contribute to them. After briefly describing research on both emotional biases and their modification, we examine similarities between CBM paradigms and older experimental paradigms used in research on learning and memory. We also compare the techniques and goals of CBM research to other approaches to understanding cognition/emotion interactions. From a functional perspective, the CBM tradition reminds us to use experimental tools to evaluate assumptions about clinical phenomena and more generally, about causal …

Islamic Civilization And (Western) Modernity, Peter O'Brien Oct 2011

Islamic Civilization And (Western) Modernity, Peter O'Brien

Political Science Faculty Research

Much historiography of the last three decades has undermined the sway of Eurocentrism. Though unabashedly Eurocentric histories still become bestsellers,1 revisionists have shown that the ideas and developments that spawned modernity hardly sprang sui generis from European soil. In their historic re-awakening starting at the end of the Middle Ages that ushered in the Renaissance, Reformation, Scientific Revolution and Enlightenment, Europeans borrowed and augmented a vast array of ideas, institutions, and practices particularly from Islamic, but also Indian and Chinese, civilization.2

This article contends that such revisionism, itself now putative, does not probe searchingly enough the inter-civilizational encounter …

Immigration To Germany: Past And Present Experiences, Peter O'Brien Sep 2011

Immigration To Germany: Past And Present Experiences, Peter O'Brien

Political Science Faculty Research

Germany long stood as the epitome of the ethno-nationalist approach to immigration. However, passage of the new Citizenship Law in 2000, which introduced jus soli, seemed to signal a sea change in the direction of a postnational outlook. This paper warns against seeing in the new legislation an emerging normative consensus around the kind of liberal cosmopolitanism advocated by the likes of Jürgen Habermas, Ulrich Beck or Will Kymlicka. I document the persistent allure and influence of nationalism and point to the growing appeal and sway of proposals and policies informed by a postmodern normative outlook. Germany’s normative landscape, …

A Comparison Of Mindfulness, Nonjudgmental, And Cognitive Dissonance-Based Approaches To Mirror Exposure, Cynthia A. Luethcke, Leda Mcdaniel, Carolyn Becker

Psychology Faculty Research

This study compares different versions of mirror exposure (ME), a body image intervention with research support. ME protocols were adapted to maximize control and comparability, and scripted for delivery by research assistants. Female undergraduates (N = 168) were randomly assigned to receive mindfulness-based (MB; n = 58), nonjudgmental (NJ; n = 55), or cognitive dissonance-based (CD, n = 55) ME. Participants completed the Body Image Avoidance Questionnaire (BIAQ), Body Checking Questionnaire (BCQ), Satisfaction with Body Parts Scale (SBPS), Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), and Eating Disorders Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q) at pre-treatment, post-treatment, and 1-month follow-up. Mixed models ANOVAs revealed a …

Refazendo Corpos Para Os Mortos: As Efígies Mortuárias Kalapalo (Alto Xingu, Brasil), Antonio R. Guerreiro Jr.

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

The Quarup is an Upper Xinguan ritual in which at least one deceased nobleman is remembered in the form of an effigy, a temporary body made out of the wood of a special tree trunk. In this paper I analyze how the notions of body, trunk, soul and chief are related to the concept akuãpütelü (“to homage” or “to substitute”), by which the Kalapalo describe the Quarup. I argue that effigies work at restoring the conditions necessary for the production of kinship, and discuss why the ritualization of relations of enmity with other Xinguans is necessary for this process.

Psychology Faculty Research

Whether or not nonhuman primates exhibit population-level handedness remains a topic of considerable scientific debate. Here, we examined handedness for coordinated bimanual actions in a sample of 777 great apes including chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, and orangutans. We found population-level right-handedness in chimpanzees, bonobos and gorillas, but left-handedness in orangutans. Directional biases in handedness were consistent across independent samples of apes within each genus. We suggest that, contrary to previous claims, population-level handedness is evident in great apes but differs among species as a result of ecological adaptations associated with posture and locomotion. We further suggest that historical views of nonhuman …
