Resources Available For Latino Parents In Selected Districts Of The Seattle, Washington Area, Morgan Beale
Educational Specialist, 2009-2019
Research has established that diversity in student populations within U.S schools is increasing at a rapid rate. With Latino students constituting the fastest growing minority population, it becomes more important to establish a positive home-school connection with parents. In addition, while some progress has been made in closing the achievement gap between Caucasian and minority students, this gap continues to show minority students achieving at a rate much lower than Caucasian students. The current study examined what resources school districts offer for parents from ethnic and racially diverse backgrounds, specifically addressing Latino parents. Four districts were picked out of a …
Transitioning The Needs Of Children With Chronic Illness: Exploring Communication Between Hospitals And School Settings, Christina Marchitto
Transitioning The Needs Of Children With Chronic Illness: Exploring Communication Between Hospitals And School Settings, Christina Marchitto
Social Work Theses
Chronic illnesses like cancer, sickle cell anemia, HIV, hemophilia, and metabolic disorders are on the rise. Chronic illness can be defined as an ongoing health condition that requires specialized treatments and may cause limitations in functions, activities or social roles. There are multiple phases that individuals with chronic illness progress through while learning to cope with their condition. Children with chronic illness are likely to spend a great deal of time in doctor’s offices and in the hospital. This study hypothesized that there is limited support for and understanding of the needs of children with chronic illness once they leave …

Smart Density: A More Accurate Method Of Measuring Rural Residential Density For Health-Related Research, Peter M. Owens, Linda Titus-Ernstoff, Lucinda Gibson, Michael L. Beach, Sandy Beauregard, Madeline A. Dalton
Dartmouth Scholarship
Studies involving the built environment have typically relied on US Census data to measure residential density. However, census geographic units are often unsuited to health-related research, especially in rural areas where development is clustered and discontinuous. We evaluated the accuracy of both standard census methods and alternative GIS-based methods to measure rural density.

The Relevance Of Executive Functions In Academic Production In Middle School, Norina Bobik
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
The present study investigated the role that executive function plays on academic production in middle school from a prototype perspective. It was hypothesized that middle school teachers' prototypical ratings of the executive function capacities of middle school students who are academically successful would differ significantly from these same middle school teachers' prototypical ratings of the executive function capacities of middle school students who are academically unsuccessful. The study used archival data consisting of items from the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF), a questionnaire that was completed by middle school teachers during a professional in-service workshop at four large …

The New Outsiders: Adhd And Disadvantage, Valerie Harwood
Valerie Harwood
Recent research has pointed to the uneven distribution of diagnoses of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, with disproportionately high numbers in areas marked by poverty (Gifford Sawyer et al., 2004; Olfsen et al., 2003). This chapter examines this issue of ADHD and social and economic disadvantage. Drawing on research with youth professionals from some of the most disadvantaged communities in Australia, the chapter puts forward the case that the ADHD phenomenon has highly problematic effects on the lives of children and young people in these communities. The intent is to show how the ADHD phenomenon interacts with disadvantage, and suggest how …
