The aim of this study was to examine the effect of endurance training on skeletal muscle phospholipid molecular species from high-fat fed rats. Twelve female Sprague- Dawley rats were fed a high-fat diet (78.1% energy). The rats were randomly divided into two groups, a sedentary control group and a trained group (125 min of treadmill running at 8 m/min, 4 days/wk for 4 weeks). Forty-eight hours after their last training bout phospholipids were extracted from the red and white vastus lateralis and analyzed by electrospray-ionization mass spectrometry. Current military operations involve complex omnipresent threats, resulting in the need for all soldiers, regardless of occupational speciality, to wear body armour during operational deployment. Body armour is typically comprised of both hard and soft armour and is designed to provide ballistic, fragmentation and stab protection. The weight load and bulk of body armour, which is influenced by the materials used and extent of hard and soft armour coverage of the body, has the potential to affect a soldiers physical mobility on the battlefield. The Bauschinger effect (yield stress decreasing at the start of reverse deformation after forward prestrain) is an important factor in strength development for cold metal forming technology. In steels, the magnitude of the Bauschinger effect depends on composition, through the presence of microalloy precipitates, and prior processing, through the size and distribution of microalloy precipitates and presence of retained work hardening. In this article, the microstructures of two (Nb- and Nb-V-microalloyed) steel plates, in terms of (Ti,Nb,V,Cu)-rich particle distributions and dislocation densities, have been quantitatively related to the Bauschinger parameters for the same processing conditions. The marker variable technique offers a practical and easy method to address the validity threat on account of common method variance to the findings of individual studies. Hawever, the validity of the marker variable technique has not been established. This paper examines the validity threat to the marker variable technique arising from multiple criteria for the selection of the marker variable proposed in the literature. Our findings shaw that the conclusions that can be drawn under different criteria are significantly and substantially different, raising doubts about the validity of the marker variable technique. We investigated the effect of fuel age on the truncation of spread of unplanned fires using a set of 1473 patches in the Sydney region of Australia. Twenty-two percent of patches derived from prescribed fire experienced a subsequent unplanned fire within 5 years, compared with 42% of patches derived from unplanned fires. Among those encounters, the subsequent unplanned fire stopped at the leading edge of 18% of prescribed patches and 11% of unplanned patches. In comparison, the subsequent fire stopped somewhere in the patch for 44% of both prescribed and unplanned fires. Overall, there was a 10% chance that a …

Much research has described the various practices needed of gaining access and participation in multi-user game communities. Cheat sites are a continuation of game communities where players engage in knowledge building about game related challenges. In this paper we analyze the cheat sites created by players for a tween virtual world called Whyville.net, which encourages youth to participate in a range of social activities and play casual science games. Through analysis we created typologies for both the cheats and sites related to science content. Further, a case study of an exemplary cheat site elaborates on how some player generated sites …

PURPOSE. To examine the deposition of tear phospholipids and cholesterol onto worn contact lenses and the effect of lens material and lens care solution. METHODS. Lipids were extracted from tears and worn contact lenses using 2: 1 chloroform: methanol and the extract washed with aqueous ammonium acetate, before analysis by electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MS/MS). RESULTS. Twenty-three molecular lipids from the sphingomyelin (SM) and phosphatidylcholine (PC) classes were detected in tears, with total concentrations of each class determined to be 5 +/- 1 pmol/mu L (similar to 3.8 mu g/mL) and 6 +/- 1 pmol/mu L (similar to 4.6 …
