Digital finding aids increase use and visibility of special collections materials, but many programs or services require knowledge of coding languages to create and maintain them. “Special Collections as Laboratories,” a recent posting on the Chronicle of Higher Education’s The Wired Campus blog, revived the myth of special collections as dusty and often forgotten repositories.

This poster session illustrates how Special & Digital Collections (SDC) at the University of South Florida Tampa Library transformed its web presence in order to dispel such notions. SDC created a series of collection guides using Springshare’s LibGuides platform to make its web presence more user-friendly, engaging, interactive, and holistic. The guides also add value to the researcher by contextualizing each collection and highlighting connections/partnerships with other Library units, related academic …

In addition, many of Central Library's subject departments have special collections beyond those contained in these seven archives. Milwaukee Waterways illustrates the role Lake Michigan and Milwaukee's rivers have played in the history of Milwaukee. Pictures of the harbor and ships from around the world loading and unloading materials show the variety of materials that passed through the Port over time. Other pictures illustrate the role the rivers played in the commercial development of the city. Aerial views of the harbor and rivers and lakefront show the changing uses of the water and land. Milwaukee was founded at the site where three rivers; the Milwaukee, Menomonee and Kinnickinnic, flow into Lake Michigan. Milwaukee began as a Great Lakes …

Rose Fortier

In the 1960s a box of marriage certificates created between 1822 and 1876 was found at the Milwaukee County Courthouse. The box also included some miscellaneous documents pertaining to the marriage such as permission to marry slips, authorizations, and land deeds. The information in these documents include a parent giving permission for an underage child to marry, an affidavit of there being no impediment to marriage, information on the closeness of the blood relationship, and written permission for the clerk to hand the marriage license to a third party for delivery. These documents generally do not have standardized information, but …
