Safety Rituals: How Women Cope With The Fear Of Sexual Violence, Luciana C. Silva, David W. Wright
Safety Rituals: How Women Cope With The Fear Of Sexual Violence, Luciana C. Silva, David W. Wright
The Qualitative Report
In this study we focus on how women's fear of sexual violence shapes their views on sexual assault and influences their use of safety strategies as well as how those safety strategies may restrict their use of time and space. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 5 participants who also journaled for one week on the topic of sexual violence. Data were analyzed through an inductive analysis approach. These women think about sexual violence as a widespread problem that affects them disproportionately more than it affects men; they engage in precautionary behaviors in a ritualistic manner; and their fear of sexual …

Pedestrian And Bicycle Safety On A College Campus: Crash And Conflict Analyses With Recommended Design Alternatives For Clemson University, Gabe Dobbs
All Theses
The primary goal of this study is to investigate pedestrian and bicycle safety qualitatively and quantitatively on the campus of Clemson University and to provide recommendations for safety improvement based on these analyses. Because of heavy pedestrian and bicycle volumes, the well-being of these users is critical to the overall safety culture of a university. The analysis of crashes, pedestrian-vehicle conflict data, vehicular speeds and volumes, and crosswalk facility characteristics on Clemson's campus enabled the development of a prioritization scheme for the selection of pedestrian crossing sites for design improvement. These data components were utilized in verifying the validity of …

A Note On The "Union Effect" In Vsl Studies, Philip E. Graves
A Note On The "Union Effect" In Vsl Studies, Philip E. Graves
PHILIP E GRAVES
Viscusi and Aldy (2003) observe that “most studies of the U.S. labor market find that union affiliation is positively correlated with a greater wage-risk tradeoff while international evidence is much more mixed.” They provide several arguments as to why the risk premium might be higher for union members (marginal versus average worker preference, the quasi-public good nature of workplace safety, and better safety information for the unionized). An alternative explanation–concentration of union membership in undesirable locations–can account for both the apparent higher risk premium in union jobs in the United States and the failure to find that gap in the …
The Status Of Violence Prevention In West Virginia Elementary Schools : A Case Study, Kristal Gayle Pentasuglia-Filipek
The Status Of Violence Prevention In West Virginia Elementary Schools : A Case Study, Kristal Gayle Pentasuglia-Filipek
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
While there is no absolute deterrent of school violence, West Virginia has taken definitive steps to try to ensure safety in our public schools. Since the launch of the Safe School initiative in 1995, training for principals, teachers and school personnel on crisis intervention and management plans have been ongoing. Students have undergone training in programs such as Peer Mediation, Natural Helpers, Life Skills, Bullying Prevention, Positive Behavior Support (PBS), and Respect to Protect. In addition, encouragement, mandating and providing funds for school safety and violence/crime prevention and intervention programs have been enacted legislatively. With the school security hardware, safety …
