Parental input and participation on curricular decisions influence the educational process in private schools. Parental participation in the development and continual examination of the curriculum is essential to maintaining an educational environment that reflects the ideals and goals of all of the stakeholders. However, parents often have differing ideas from schools on what the curriculum should encompass. The problem facing private school leaders is how to negotiate the tensions resulting from conflicting parental expectations for the curriculum of the school. The communicative language teaching approach has had a significant impact on the teaching of grammar. In general, the communicative approach, and its objective of communicative competence, has led to a diminished role for grammar teaching. However, of late, numerous voices have advocated a more prominent role for grammar in achieving this objective. As a result, various broad approaches as well as specific techniques have been suggested in teaching grammar to English as a Second language students. Almost all of the students are international with a desire to stay and work in Australia. In practice however, seeking professional employment in Australia has proved quite challenging for many of these students. Beyond the Standards' influence on K-12 language education policy and continued discussions of their relevance and application to FL instruction and assessment, in university-level FL departments the tangible impacts of the Standards in shaping curriculum and classroom instruction have not been wide-ranging. This chapter identifies and discusses three factors that have contributed to the reception of the Standards in higher education in general terms and, more specifically, in terms of the advanced undergraduate FL curriculum. Based on the discussion of these three factors, I respond to the question of whether the Standards provide a framework adequate in addressing the critical …
