Attachment: The Antidote To Trauma, Joshua Straub Sep 2009

Attachment: The Antidote To Trauma, Joshua Straub

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Trauma and loss in life are inevitable. And all too often the traumatic experience itself can be enough to paralyze the mental, emotional, and spiritual state of any given person. Unable to interpret the traumatic experience, many instead are left defined by it. Helping clients discern the objective experience and their subjective reactions to it will help free them from the emotions and beliefs that subsequently control their lives. Based on the most relevant attachment theory research and clinical techniques, this workshop teaches the attentional strategies necessary to helping clients overcome trauma.

Euro Versus Dolar, Wenceslao Gimenez Bonet Sep 2009

Euro Versus Dolar, Wenceslao Gimenez Bonet

Wenceslao Gimenez Bonet

Managing A Nation's Image During Crisis: A Study Of The Chinese Government's Image Repair Efforts In The “Made In China” Controversy, Peijuan Cai, Lee Pei Ting, Augustine Pang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The image of a nation is crucial in the conduct of international relations (Wang, J. (2006). Managing national reputation and international relations in the global era: Public diplomacy revisited. Public Relations Review, 32, 91–96). A favorable image plays a critical role in asserting one's influence (Benoit, W. L., & Brinson, S. L. (1994). AT&T: “Apologies are not enough”. Communication Quarterly, 42, 75–88; Wang, J. (2006). Managing national reputation and international relations in the global era: Public diplomacy revisited. Public Relations Review, 32, 91–96). Often, strategic communication tools like public relations and media diplomacy are used to enhance a nation's image …

Equilibrium determines leverage, not just interest rates. Variations in leverage cause fluctuations in asset prices. This leverage cycle can be damaging to the economy, and should be regulated.

Optical Fibre Access Networks And The Recession, Ewan Sutherland May 2009

Optical Fibre Access Networks And The Recession, Ewan Sutherland

Ewan Sutherland

The economic recession has been an opportunity for the telecommunications industry to call for investment in optical fibre access networks as a stimulus towards economic recovery. This argument is tested against the background of developments in Singapore, France, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.

The Restriction Of Civil Liberties During Times Of Crisis: The Evolution Of America's Response To National Military Threats, Matthew D. Fairman May 2009

The Restriction Of Civil Liberties During Times Of Crisis: The Evolution Of America's Response To National Military Threats, Matthew D. Fairman

Government and International Relations Honors Papers

This treatise explores the nature and significance of the threat posed to civil liberties during times of major national military crisis and evaluates changes in the nature of wartime repression over the course of American history. It tests the thesis that the evolution in Americans’ response to such crises has not been a simple progression toward increasing restraint on the part of federal, state, and local policymakers, as is sometimes assumed. Rather, major twentieth and twenty-first century developments related to the nature of threats to American national security and government capabilities to covertly repress dissent have interacted with evolutionary changes …

Optimizing Citizen Engagement During Emergencies Through Use Of Web 2.0 Technologies, Laurie J. Van Leuven Mar 2009

Optimizing Citizen Engagement During Emergencies Through Use Of Web 2.0 Technologies, Laurie J. Van Leuven

CUP Faculty Research

Emergencies and disasters create hardships for citizens. To speed up recovery, local governments need to engage with citizens in an interactive information sharing system to convey information while the incident is still developing and to help mitigate and recover from damages. Lack of effective communication can decrease public trust and engender stress and anxiety of the survivors. As service delivery becomes more complicated during an emergency, responders can also benefit from additional information from the public to increase situational awareness and better understand the challenges facing citizens. This thesis examines emergency information needs, emerging information sharing trends, and the potential …

Environmental Crises: Past, Present Ad Future, M. Scott Taylor Jan 2009

Environmental Crises: Past, Present Ad Future, M. Scott Taylor

M. Scott Taylor

Environmental crises are distinguished by rapid and largely unexpected changes in environmental quality that are difficult if not impossible to reverse. Examples would be major extinctions and signi…cant degradations of an ecosystem. I argue there are three preconditions for crisis: failures in governance, an ecological system exhibiting a tipping point, and an economy/environment interaction with positive feedbacks. I develop a simple model to illustrate how a crisis may arise, and draw on our knowledge of past and present crises to highlight the mechanisms involved. I then speculate as to whether climate change is indeed a crisis in the making.

Understanding The Global Financial Crisis, Eduardo Pol Jan 2009

Understanding The Global Financial Crisis, Eduardo Pol

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

The financial meltdown 2007-08 was a vast and complex event that many analysts are still trying to decipher. The purpose of this paper is to impart an understanding of the global financial crisis with a sharp focus on informed conjectures. To this end, the paper first provides a picture in the large of the financial turmoil 2007-08, and then, singles out contributing factors to the crisis (such as sub-prime mortgages, excessive risk-taking and securitization) which taken in isolation could not possibly explain the collapse of the financial system. The main claims of this paper are the following two. First, no …
