When I was a kid, I always wished I was older. My friends and I would play games pretending we were ‘grown-ups.’ I was sure I would be an actress, living in a mansion in Malibu, with a wonderful husband—all because the game ‘M.A.S.H’ told me so. My mother used to say, “Trust me, Jen. When you’re older, you’ll wish you were young again.”

The games I played as a child were full of imagination and innocence. There were no dating games or addictions to games, and playing ‘make-believe’ did not automatically stereotype you as a nerd. It seems to …

This report is a mock analysis of the Fairhaven Harbor Development for L.E.E.D.-ND. L.E.E.D.-ND (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design-Neighborhood Development) is a pilot program that promotes sustainability and green building. Fairhaven Harbor is a mixed-use neighborhood development located in the historic district of Fairhaven, between 8th street and Harris Avenue on Padden Creek. This development is a prime candidate for L.E.E.D.-ND certification in that it is easily attainable. To be L.E.E.D.-ND certified the development must meet all of the prerequisites for each of the three main categories and score at least 40 credits. Currently the development does not meet …

The Fountain District of Bellingham, Washington offers the perfect location for a LEED-ND development project. In 2007 residents from the Columbia, Cornwall Park and Lettered Streets Neighborhoods launched an outreach to revamp the commercial area commonly known as the Fountain District (City of Bellingham, 2009). Since 2007 the City of Bellingham has been formulating an Urban Village master plan for the Fountain District and based on those plans we developed our site design proposal. The Fountain District encompasses the area of Meridian Street beginning at the intersection of Illinois and running south to the intersections of Girard and Broadway, providing …

Situation Assessment In Villa Nueva: Prospects For An Urban Disaster Risk Reduction Program In Guatemala City’S Precarious Settlements, Rebekah Paci-Green, Scott B. Miles, Walter Svekla

Environmental Studies Faculty and Staff Publications

In 2009, Oxfam-Great Britain in Guatemala asked The Resilience Institute of Western Washington University to conduct a situation assessment of two informal communities in the outskirts of Guatemala City, Guatemala. Oxfam sought to assess the potential for developing an urban disaster risk reduction program within the metropolitan’s precarious settlements – informal settlements along the steep embankments of ravines. These settlements are often rapidly constructed overnight using temporary materials, with little possibility for considering the prevalent risk of landslides and seismic activity. Because residents build these squatter settlements without municipal approval, the settlements are considered illegal and often remain un-serviced for …

Klipsun Magazine

I hate to bring up the economy (after all, it’s all we ever hear about anymore), but even during these hard financial times, a fresh start is possible. !at’s what this issue of Klipsun is all about: “New Beginnings”— the challenges we face in our lives and how we start anew.

“New Beginnings” covers a wide range of stories, from life after injury and prison, to the struggles of being a transsexual or living as a refugee in an unfamiliar country. Starting anew can also create opportunities to grow and learn as individuals and as a community, including finding new …

They say beauty is more than skin deep, but that does not mean we should discount skin altogether. Skin plays an integral role in shaping personality and character since the way people choose to clothe, decorate or care for their skin can tell a story about who they are.

The theme of this issue is “Skin Deep” because the stories explore attitudes toward skin that create various life circumstances. For example, one article discusses burlesque dancers who participate in the revealing art form because they say it makes them feel less self- conscious and more comfortable in their own skin. …

Granary Building Environmental Impact Assessment, Shelby Cooper, Devon Fredericksen, Bora Kim, James White, Grant Wilson Apr 2009

Granary Building Environmental Impact Assessment, Shelby Cooper, Devon Fredericksen, Bora Kim, James White, Grant Wilson

College of the Environment Graduate and Undergraduate Publications

The Port of Bellingham proposes to partially demolish the Granary Building on the Bellingham New Whatcom redevelopment site located on the downtown waterfront. Partial demolition of the building--removing the northern portion of the building, increasing the distance between the building and the shoreline--is preferable to either complete preservation or total demolition for a number of reasons. Preserving at least some of the original structure would retain historic value within the proposed historic district of the New Whatcom waterfront space. Removing part of the structure would create more of a shoreline buffer to enhance habitat restoration of the adjacent Whatcom Waterway. …

King Mountain Neighborhood Urban Village Environmental Impact Assessment, Sarah Collins, Thomas Hall, Zoe Nelson, Abby Vincent, Jared Zeretzke

College of the Environment Graduate and Undergraduate Publications

Two-hundred-eighty-six acres of land were recently incorporated into Bellingham's urban growth boundary, allowing the land to be developed at higher densities. Alliance Properties has proposed development of a high-density, mixed-use urban village on 135 acres of undeveloped land on King Mountain near James Street. An extension of James Street will continue up to Van Wyck Road. Sixty-eight acres will be used for residential land, 46 acres for open spaces and parks, and 21 acres for roads. In the proposed development area, an urban village center will be constructed. This center will contain residential and commercial uses, from cafes and stores …

College of the Environment Graduate and Undergraduate Publications

This environmental impact assessment addresses the Port of Bellingham's Demolition Permit application for the pulp storage building, the pulp screen room, and the bleach plant of the old Georgia-Pacific site located at Section 25, Township 38 North, Range 2 East in the City of Bellingham, Whatcom County, Washington State. The area has long been an industrial zone with a dynamic past of pulp and paper production. In 2008, the tissue mill on the site was demolished, paving the way for the remaining buildings to be demolished to allow for the Port's planned mixed development projects.

European Union Integration Theories: Historical Significance And Future Development, Bradley Pederson Apr 2009

European Union Integration Theories: Historical Significance And Future Development, Bradley Pederson

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

The European Union is a political body like no other. It has maintained its ability to balance a fine line between supranational organization and member state sovereignty. Throughout its conception and subsequent progress, many theorists have attempted to tackle the complexity of the Union’s integration. Some focus on the Union’s need to widen its membership to include more states, while others explain the necessity to deepen the bonds between existing members. In this thesis I will attempt to answer the question of which integration theories have impacted the European Union most drastically to this point and which theories will be …

Shifting Baselines In The Fishing Industry Of The Lummi Nation: A Study Of Declining Expectations, Alyssa A. Cudmore Apr 2009

Shifting Baselines In The Fishing Industry Of The Lummi Nation: A Study Of Declining Expectations, Alyssa A. Cudmore

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

Shifting environmental baselines are inter-generational changes in perception of the state of the environment. As one generation replaces another, people's perceptions of what is natural change even to the extent that they no longer believe historical anecdotes of past abundance or size of species. I present the first quantified evidence of shifting environmental baselines from a Pacific Northwest Native American fishery (Lummi Nation in Puget Sound, Washington). As depletion of commercial fish species spreads out from the coast, younger fishers share few of their elders' memories of former abundances. Of three generations, the oldest reported more fish species depleted, and …

“Subculture” is a complex concept that is difficult to define without first looking at the meaning of “culture.” Culture refers to people who are bound by a number of shared traits, such as values, goals, practices and attitudes. Subcultures consist of individuals who not only belong to a larger culture, but share attributes distinguishing them from their overall community.

As you may have guessed, Bellingham has its own culture and Bellinghamsters share common features that make up the skeleton of the ‘Ham’s distinct scene. Just to name a few well-known traits: people living in Bellingham are open-minded, prepared for the …

Active-Duty Military Service, Cohabiting Unions, And The Transition To Marriage, Megan Lemmon, Mira Whyman, Jay Teachman Feb 2009

Active-Duty Military Service, Cohabiting Unions, And The Transition To Marriage, Megan Lemmon, Mira Whyman, Jay Teachman

Sociology

A small but growing body of research has begun to identify the consequences of military service during the all-voluntary era. In this article, we examine the relationship between military service and the likelihood that cohabiting unions will be converted into marriages. Our paper extends previous research by making a distinction between the effects of active-duty verses reserve-duty service on the transition to marriage using data from the 1979-2004 National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY). Our findings indicate that there is a positive relationship between active-duty service and cohabitors transitioning to marriage.

The Spanish Town Crier: A Case Study Of Radio Sol’S Grassroots Programming In An Era Of Spanish-Language Radio Consolidation, Carolyn E. Nielsen

Journalism Faculty Publications

This study draws evidence from trends in Spanish-language radio proliferation and media consolidation to examine how the nation’s fastest growing ethnic group is served by this key news and information medium.

Latinos establishing themselves in historically non-Latino urban areas are statistically likely to turn to radio for information. However, the quality of programming can vary significantly and, in many cases, is exclusively entertainment produced outside the region. Local programming has been threatened by growth and consolidation, which have led to large corporations holding most stations in urban markets. Networks that distribute canned programming to their outlets ignore listener’s need for …

Indulging Our Gendered Selves? Sex Segregation By Field Of Study In 44 Countries, Karen Bradley, Maria Charles Jan 2009

Indulging Our Gendered Selves? Sex Segregation By Field Of Study In 44 Countries, Karen Bradley, Maria Charles

Sociology

Data from 44 societies are used to explore sex segregation by field of study. Contrary to accounts linking socioeconomic modernization to a "degendering" of public-sphere institutions, sex typing of curricular fields is stronger in more economically developed contexts. The authors argue that two cultural forces combine in advanced industrial societies to create a new sort of sex segregation regime. The first is gender-essentialist ideology, which has proven to be extremely resilient even in the most liberal-egalitarian of contexts; the second is self-expressive value systems, which create opportunities and incentives for the expression of "gendered selves." Multivariate analyses suggest that structural …

College of the Environment Graduate and Undergraduate Publications

"The purpose of this Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is to evaluate the potential impacts of closing the Brannian Creek kokanee hatchery located in South Bay Lake Whatcom. Due to a large budget deficit facing the state of Washington, the closure of several hatcheries managed by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) has been proposed as a possible cutback measure. This EIA investigates the positive and negative impacts associated with the proposed action of hatchery closure, an alternative action and if no action was taken. The assessment of impacts was done in accordance with the State Environmental Policy Act …

State Route 542: Warnick Bluff Stabilization : Wsdot-Identified Chronic Environmental Deficiencies Mitigation To Protect Infrastructure And Reduce Potential Environmental Damage, Benjamin Gardner, Jon Loewus-Deitch, Chelsey Emerick, Maria Debari, Kelly Slattery

College of the Environment Graduate and Undergraduate Publications

"The beginning sections of this EIA give an overview of the project location. SR 542, Mt. Baker Highway runs parallel to the NF Nooksack River near the top of Warnick Bluff. Chronic repetitive erosion has been a problem that is exacerbated by severe flood events throughout the past decade. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) estimates that the bank has eroded at a rate of approximately five feet per year since 1994. At the site of the proposed project, the SR 542 currently lies fifteen feet away from the edge of the bluff. The highway could potentially be washed …

Whatcom Wind Energy Ordinance, Erica Bartlett, Derek Schruhl, Kimberly Popek, Kurt Niemeyer, Scott Dewees

College of the Environment Graduate and Undergraduate Publications

"The purpose of this ordinance is to create zoning text language that facilitates the installment and construction of wind energy systems (WES) within Whatcom County for private landowners, taking into account interests expressed by residents. This action is needed, because current height limitations of underlying zoning districts unduly restrict the installment of these systems. This action responds to the goals and objectives outlined in the Whatcom County Comprehensive Plan and Washington State Growth Management Act. The action helps move the project area towards desired conditions described in that plan by placing a high priority on healthy air quality and environmental …
