The author reports on the accomplishments of the Georgia Library Association (GLA) for 2009. The GLA held its annual Library Day in Atlanta and it sponsored awards and scholarships, including the American Library Association (ALA) Emerging Leader, Hubbard Scholarship, and Beard Scholarship. Also noted is the support of the GLA to Read Across America, the Georgia Student Media Festival and the Georgia Peach Award. Another initiative of the GLA is the passage of a resolution for an honorary membership for the late AA Director Judith F. Krug.

The article reports on the coordination of the statewide application of Georgia for funding of public computer centers for libraries under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act through the Department of Commerce's National Telecommunications Information Administration (NTIA). The funding will be made possible by the NTIA Broadband Opportunities Program. Among the library systems that filed application include Athens Regional, Atlanta-Fulton County and DeKalb County Partnership, and South Georgia Regional.

It Takes A Village To Support A Library, Peter D. Pearson

The author explains how friends of library groups and organizations can support a library. It points out the significance of political advocacy, particularly the role of the friends of library groups in promoting the importance of a public library. It encourages the holding of private fundraising combined with advocacy for the benefit of the library and taking into consideration the capabilities of its board of directors and moving beyond just membership contributions. Also proposed is the use of a merged model of a library friends group and foundation.

The article reports on the merger of the nine colleges of the Technical College System of Georgia into four colleges. The merged colleges are the Chattahoochee Technical College, Georgia Northwestern Technical College, Southeastern Technical College, and West Georgia Technical College. A noted result of the mergers is the increase in intra-library loans among the colleges. Additional schools are also expected to consolidate in 2010.

The article reports on the creation of an African American Funeral Program collection of resources by Dottie Demarest, a librarian and a genealogy and local history specialist at the East Central Georgia Regional Library (ECGRL) inspired by the donation from the funeral programs of African American Eula Mae Ramsey Johnson. The collection provides information on the lives of the deceased. About 1,2000 funeral programs now consist the collection following digitization of the programs through the help of Georgia HomePlace.

For three years following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, residents of the Gulf Coast enjoyed a reprieve from serious threats. But in 2008 Hurricanes Gustav and Ike confirmed that massive evacuations are now a reality of hurricane season. A consequence of such large evacuations is the establishment of hundreds of shelters across the country. Opportunities exist to improve information assistance and information dissemination in hurricane shelters. Information professionals can help by conducting research and documenting their experiences in shelters. Millions of students visit academic libraries each year, hoping to achieve success in the classroom and make progress with their research. Many of these students need help in navigating the complex services, collections, and facilities of a large academic library. Librarians often respond to this need by offering in-person orientation tours. However, with this approach, library personnel are unable to reach all who need assistance. The author tells about his collection of books in his personal library. He says that his collection has grown with the number of volumes exceeding 800 as his interest in various writings expanded. Among the books he added are the travel writings of Paul Theroux, all the novels by Armistead Maupin, novels about baseball players, histories of the textile leagues and biographies of Joe Jackson. The article describes the Second Life culture as an interactive virtual environment from the perspective of a reference librarian. The cited advantages of using Second Life are synchronous interaction with other people, clearer appearance of chat text messages, incorporation of social norms, and accessibility. Among the noted obstacles to using Second Life are its price, intentional distress of other avatars, empty virtual public places, less hierarchy among participants, chatting via rapid typing, and quick change of landscapes and avatars.
