This past week, the Rhode Island Assembly passed an unprecedented pieces of legislation that will protect victims from sex industry predators and give law enforcement the tools they need to arrest pimps, traffickers, and “johns.”

I have been collecting evidence of pimps’ practice of tattooing victims for several years. Tattooing, and sometimes branding or scarification, are marks of ownership. It is one of the ways that pimps maintain physical and psychological control over emotionally vulnerable girls. The girls and young women are frequently tattooed with the initials or street names of pimps. Marks also include gang symbols and $ signs or other symbols for the money the girls earn for the pimp.

Ruth moved to Providence six years ago when she was 18. Young and on her own, she was swept up by a rough crowd of guys who dealt and used crack and cocaine. Hanging around the strip clubs with them until early in the morning was “the thing to do when you were bored.” After hours, her friends would sell cocaine to the women working at the clubs.

Assam is endowed with copious aquatic wealth in the form of beels, swamps, ponds and rivers. The floodplain wetlands (beels) extending over one lakh hectare, constitute the most important fishery resource of the state. Employees in the Public Sector face a range of workplace conflicts from the “macro” to the “micro.” State and federal budget cutbacks can jeopardize programs, which can create conflicts with clients who no longer meet eligibility criteria and/or with coworkers whose positions are no longer funded. Increasing stress in and out of the workplace affects work and home life and employees across the spectrum need additional assistance managing the impact of these complicated issues. Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) were designed as workplace benefit programs to provide services and training to help employees manage the issues most affecting their work.
