Internet social networking sites have been the source of much speculation and controversy in the few years that they have been in existence. These sites (the most popular being MySpace and Facebook) allow their users to create online profiles, with which they can post pictures of themselves and interact with other users via text-based messaging. These sites are especially popular among teens and young adults, many of whom find their lives controlled by these sites. This article is a follow-up to the Internet Reviews column which appeared in Kentucky Libraries in the Fall 2006 issue (v 70 n 4, p 12- 16). As with all things internet, a lot has changed in a short time. Both Facebook (http://www.facebook.com) and MySpace (http://www.myspace.com) have new features with new implications for library use. We think it is time for another look.

Plug a prospective employee's name into an Internet search engine, and you might be surprised at what you find. Web pages may tell hiring attorneys that the person they just interviewed wrote for an undergraduate newspaper or belonged to a specific sorority, but the Web may also reveal the recent interviewee's drink of choice and dating status. Law firms can use the Internet for their own recruiting needs, says attorney Michael D. Mann, but they should take what they read on the Web with a grain of salt.

As online social communities (e.g. MySpace, Facebook) grow in popularity and become commonplace, these same communities also become sites of information exchange through various communication channels (eg. text, visual, aural). With these exchanges occurring either individually or collectively, sets of questions arise regarding the community, the value of information within that community, and how/what/why they choose to communicate what they do within such a space. By applying Sandra Petronio’s Communication Privacy Management theory and Michel Foucault’s discussion of the Panopticon, a rhetorical critique of user decisions regarding private information within Myspace.Com can be conducted.
