Désir Et Impuissance Dans Halfaouine Et Bye-Bye, Scott Homler Dec 2005

Désir Et Impuissance Dans Halfaouine Et Bye-Bye, Scott Homler

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

The experience of adolescence and the trials of Arab and Beur masculinity are explored in the films of Férid Boughédir and Karim Dridi in order to reveal the psychology and the politics of masculinity in evolution. Studying two films, Halfaouine and Bye-Bye, as well as the autobiography of Abdelkébir Khatibi entitled La mémoire tatouée, we see that they reflect a number of discursive stages of an emergent identity of protest that is based on flight and self-destruction.

Gender Images And Power In Magazine Advertisements: The Consciousness Scale Revisited, Lorie N. Bonham May 2005

Gender Images And Power In Magazine Advertisements: The Consciousness Scale Revisited, Lorie N. Bonham

Communication Theses

This study re-evaluates the Consciousness Scale originally formulated by Pingree et al. in 1976. The element of assumed power was added to the Consciousness Scale, which was then used to evaluate 516 magazine advertisements from 1999 to determine if the Consciousness Scale still accurately evaluates sexism in media. A set of advertisements was culled which had contradictory Consciousness Scale and power ratings. The set was evaluated, revealing common themes, which created difficulty in coding these modern images. The study revealed that while the Consciousness Scale can still provide a valuable tool in evaluating media images, the change in the social …

[Review Of] Joan Nagel. Race, Ethnicity, And Sexuality: Intimate Intersections, Forbidden Frontiers, Enrique Morales-Díaz Jan 2005

[Review Of] Joan Nagel. Race, Ethnicity, And Sexuality: Intimate Intersections, Forbidden Frontiers, Enrique Morales-Díaz

Ethnic Studies Review

One of the most significant points about Joane Nagel's text is its broad approach to the idea that ethnicity is sexualized and that the boundaries that on the surface seem to separate the two concepts are actually extremely thin and transparent. Thus, according to Nagel, "Ethnicity and sexuality are strained, but not strange bedfellows" (14). She supports this statement throughout her text, providing specific examples to argue her case. Her approach to the subject at hand also coincides with her goals for the book, "to illustrate the power and ubiquity of sexuality as a feature of racial, ethnic, and national …

"Claiming Queer Cultural Citizenship: Gay Latino (Im)Migrant Acts In San Francisco", Horacio N. Roque Ramirez Dr. Jan 2005

"Claiming Queer Cultural Citizenship: Gay Latino (Im)Migrant Acts In San Francisco", Horacio N. Roque Ramirez Dr.

Horacio N Roque Ramirez, Ph.D.

The essay foregrounds the social and political histories of four gay Chicano and mexicano activists in the San Francisco Bay Area, demonstrating how their cultural and political organizing labor challenges the historical presumption that all queers are legal citizens or that all immigrants are heterosexual. Drawing on Renato Rosaldo’s conception of cultural citizenship and Lisa Lowe's notion of "immigrant acts," the essay traces these activists’ negotiation of social membership and citizenship through their cultural work, making racial ethnic and sexualized political claims in historical periods wrought by AIDS, gentrification, racism, and anti-immigrant legislations.

Intimacy, Orgasm Likelihood Of Both Partners, Conflict, And Partner Response Predict Sexual Satisfaction In Heterosexual Male And Female Respondents, R. Vernon Haning Jan 2005

Intimacy, Orgasm Likelihood Of Both Partners, Conflict, And Partner Response Predict Sexual Satisfaction In Heterosexual Male And Female Respondents, R. Vernon Haning

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Anonymous data provided by 417 female and 179 male sexually active heterosexual respondents showed that in long term sexual relationships sexual satisfaction was positively correlated with two different intimacy variables, the respondent’s orgasm likelihood, and the partner’s orgasm likelihood and negatively correlated with conflict in the relationship. All were significant predictors together in a multiple linear regression model. Empathic sexuality was defined as sexual response modulated by the sexual arousal or lack of arousal of the partner. Of 696 respondents, 90.3% reported empathic turn-on, 68% reported empathic turn-off, and 63.4% reported both empathic turn-on and turn-off, findings significantly different from …

Review Of The Book Gender In Applied Communication Contexts, Anjali Ram Jan 2005

Review Of The Book Gender In Applied Communication Contexts, Anjali Ram

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

The best scholarship on gender is one that translates readily into advocacy, action, and intervention without blunting its theoretical teeth. The repertoire of 14 articles and four commentaries included in the book “Gender in Applied Communication Con-texts,” edited by Patrice M. Buzzanell, Helen Sterk, and Lynn H. Turner, clearly demonstrate a commitment to feminist praxis, while retaining a focus on theoretical engagement. Topics range from sexual harassment and breast cancer to telecommuting, mothering, and feminist pedagogy, as the authors in this collection attempt to address directly how gender is constructed and implicated in varied communication contexts.

Spiritual Development: An Exploratory Study Of Women's Views On The Connection Between Spirituality And Sexuality, Hannah C. Osborne Jan 2005

Spiritual Development: An Exploratory Study Of Women's Views On The Connection Between Spirituality And Sexuality, Hannah C. Osborne

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the spiritual dimension within human development by looking at the ways in which spirituality is defined, how growth may take place and how one aspect of its connection with other dimensions is experienced. In a survey designed to investigate connection between spirituality and sexuality, 33 women in mid-life and beyond reported experiencing such a connection. Information was obtained by means of a 25-question survey. Analysis of the surveys shows that for these respondents sexual experience does involve characteristics that are spiritual in nature. This study contributes to the foundation upon which further investigation may serve to expand …
