White Beauty: The Portrayal Of Minorities In Teen Beauty Magazines, Micaela Choo Banks Nov 2005

White Beauty: The Portrayal Of Minorities In Teen Beauty Magazines, Micaela Choo Banks

Theses and Dissertations

This content analysis examines the representations of minorities in the two most popular teen beauty magazines: Seventeen and YM. Nine issues for 2003 constituted the sample frame yielding a total of 620 advertisements containing human models. After setting up a theoretical framework of the new racism and White beauty, this study investigates the portrayals of minority models. Overall, when compared with earlier studies the number of minority models used in mainstream magazine advertising rose and the portrayals of minority models in prominent roles increased. Yet, the subtle nature of the new racism was reinforced in the following findings: Prominent …

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this research was to develop and test a prospective model of posttraumatic stress symptoms in sexually abused children that includes pretrauma, trauma, and disclosure-related pathways.

METHOD: At time 1, several measures were used to assess pretrauma variables, trauma variables, and stress reactions upon disclosure for 156 sexually abused children ages 8 to 13 years. At the time 2 follow-up (7 to 36 months following the initial interview), the children were assessed for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms.

RESULTS: A path analysis involving a series of hierarchically nested ordinary least squares multiple regression analyses indicated three direct …

Animal Models Of Head Trauma, Ibolja Cernak Jul 2005

Animal Models Of Head Trauma, Ibolja Cernak

Biomedicine and Animal Models in Research Collection

Animal models of traumatic brain injury (TBI) are used to elucidate primary and secondary sequelae underlying human head injury in an effort to identify potential neuroprotective therapies for developing and adult brains. The choice of experimental model depends upon both the research goal and underlying objectives. The intrinsic ability to study injuryinduced changes in behavior, physiology, metabolism, the blood/tissue interface, the blood brain barrier, and/or inflammatory- and immune-mediated responses, makes in vivo TBI models essential for neurotrauma research. Whereas human TBI is a highly complex multifactorial disorder, animal trauma models tend to replicate only single factors involved in the pathobiology …

Idealized Images In Magazine Advertising And Their Effect On Male Body Satisfaction, Amy L. Baird Jan 2005

Idealized Images In Magazine Advertising And Their Effect On Male Body Satisfaction, Amy L. Baird

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Advertisements in the media have been scrutinized because of their continuous stereotypical depictions of unrealistic or idealized pictures of people (Richins, 1991). This scrutiny is based on the view that consumers will see these idealized images in the media and either consciously or unconsciously compare themselves to these images. In particular, it is suggested that thin and beautiful female models in advertisements have created dissatisfaction among women in relation to their bodies, a situation that may result in unhealthy practices such as eating disorders. This idea that idealized images in advertisements create body dissatisfaction has been widely examined in female …

Application Of Non-Linear Error Correction Models To The Demand For Money In Tunisia, Sami Khedhiri, Boudhina Riadh Jan 2005

Application Of Non-Linear Error Correction Models To The Demand For Money In Tunisia, Sami Khedhiri, Boudhina Riadh

Non linear error correction models (NLECM) have been increasingly used recently in the econometric literature since they lead to more insightful results than the linear models in empirical studies. In this research we present alternative methods of dealing with non linearity in error correction models. We apply these models to the demand for money in Tunisia and our results show that we get better predictions than the usual linear models. It is also shown that the speed of adjustment towards the long-run equilibrium is faster than what we get using linear error correction models.

Vector Quantized Radial Basis Function Neural Networks With Embedded Multiple Local Linear Models For Financial Prediction, Tony Jan, Maria H. Kim Jan 2005

Vector Quantized Radial Basis Function Neural Networks With Embedded Multiple Local Linear Models For Financial Prediction, Tony Jan, Maria H. Kim

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

In this paper, a model is proposed which combines multiple local linear models with a novel modified probabilistic neural network (MPNN). The proposed model is developed to approximate multiple nonlinear model with reduced computational requirement. The proposed model shows to provide both low bias and variance with reduced computations by utilizing semiparametric local linear approximation and efficient vector quantization of data space. The proposed model is shown to provide comparable performance to other state-of-the-art models in terms of bias, variance and computational requirement in short-term financial prediction.
