Information Seeking And Students Studying For Professional Careers: The Cases Of Enginerering And Law Students In Ireland, Gillian Kerins, Ronan Madden, Crystal Fulton

This paper reports the results of two empirical studies which explored the information seeking behaviour of engineering and law students in Ireland. Findings reveal similar patterns in the information seeking behaviour between students studying to become professionals and information seeking patterns of these groups identified in the Leckie et al. model. Students learned their information seeking strategies, including effective and less effective approaches, from educators. Mis-perceptions of the role and value of libraries and information professionals in their studies were common, and as a result, students often adopted information seeking strategies that excluded libraries and library staff. Objectives: For librarians developing a credit course for medical students, the process often involves trial and error. This project identified issues surrounding the administration of a credit course, so that librarians nationally can rely more upon shared knowledge of common practices and less upon trial and error. Methods: A questionnaire was sent to the education services librarian at each medical school listed in the 2000 AAMC Data Book. A second questionnaire was sent to those librarians who did not return the first one. Results: Of the 125 librarians surveyed, 82 returned the questionnaire. Of those 82, only 11 offered a …

Serving as liaison librarians at the department level, the authors discuss strategies for integrating library and online resources with the curriculum. Examples of technology-based capabilities range from current awareness services, e-reserves, and journal finding applications to smart linking functions that can be built into library catalogs, licensed databases, course syllabi, and tailored research guides. Attendees will be able to increase student engagement with learning resources by using their institution’s library tools more effectively, and by requesting librarian assistance to employ these functions in online research guides and course syllabi.

Assessing students' information literacy skills can be difficult depending on the involvement of the librarian in a course. To overcome this, librarians created an assignment called the Paper Trail, where students wrote a short essay about their research process and reflected on what they would do differently. Through reviewing and grading these papers, librarians determined whether students understood the difference between the library catalog and article databases, evaluated the students' search terms to see if they used effective topic keywords and Boolean operators, and learned more on how the students reflected on their research process.

It is critical that citizens of a democratic society have a solid grounding in information literacy Several conceptions and definitions of information literacy have become prevalent. For example, one conception defines information literacy in terms of a set of competencies that an informed citizen of an information society ought to possess to participate intelligently and skills. This article cites a study on evaluating information literacy skills in students at media centers. The pre-test survey asked all freshman English students to critique their abilities before they received any formal instruction from the media center team. This enabled researchers to identify areas of research. The five main research areas were, point access, information skills when researching a topic, databases, the Internet and technology. These results indicated that it's not just the collection of print and non-print resources that influence students' use of the media center.

Librarians and learning researchers at Central Michigan University collaboratively developed an online tool that assesses how student research attitudes and perceptions correlate to their actual research skills in order to educate them about state-of-the-art library resources and prepare them to write high-quality research papers. This article describes the reasons for developing the assessment as well as the design process and technical characteristics.
