This study reports on the contribution made by Playhouse Square Center to Northeast Ohio. The contribution comes in various forms, which are reflected in the report’s different sections. The first uses a traditional economic model to estimate the economic impact of Playhouse Square Center. It calculates how each dollar spent by, or due to the presence of, Playhouse Square generates additional spending and jobs in the local economy. The second type of contribution is through the various educational programs and events aimed at increasing interest and involvement in the arts. Although the value of these activities is difficult to quantify, …

Employment
Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) counselors who serve rural areas report that limited employment opportunities for people with disabilities are a significant challenge. Many rural communities have marginal or fragile economies, but lack the resources to conduct economic development projects that could lead to business and employment growth. In Progress Report #13, we described an innovative program that helps VR agencies and people with disabilities take a leadership role in small-town economic development efforts. To date, RTC: Rural’s Community Economic Development Project has been implemented in two rural locations. The Project builds on the capacities of state/federal Vocational Rehabilitation agencies and people …

The project’s objective is to provide a comprehensive benchmarking of Greater Cleveland’s economy against other metropolitan areas across the nation. To achieve this objective, the Center is planning to analyze a broad set of economic indicators in several themes to construct a broad-based economic profile of the region. This will allow for an objective determination of areas in which Cleveland and northeast Ohio …
Ghana's Vanishing Past: Development, Antiquities, And The Destruction Of The Archaeological Record, Benjamin W. Kankpeyeng, Christopher R. Decorse
Ghana's Vanishing Past: Development, Antiquities, And The Destruction Of The Archaeological Record, Benjamin W. Kankpeyeng, Christopher R. Decorse
Anthropology - All Scholarship
Ghana's past is being destroyed at a rapid rate. Although the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board has in some instances successfully intervened to stop the illicit trading of antiquities, the destruction of archaeological sites as a consequence of development over the past two decades has been staggering and the pace is accelerating. The potential of the legislation that established the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board and empowered it to manage and preserve the country's archaeological past has not been realized. The lack of political action, limited relevant public education, insufficient funding, and the poverty of the majority of the Ghanaian …

The potential of utilizing the liberalization of financial services for Egypt is great, however it is not yet realized. Egypt has made commitments under the OATS to liberalize its financial sector and therefore it has started its reform program which has been somewhat successful but it still needs deeper institutional reform. Egypt's banking system is still facing some problems as the country's largest banks are still state-owned and controlled, in addition to their suffering from cultural a technical limitations and bad loans. This paper aims to clarify that Egypt's financial liberalization will have a positive effect on economic development. This …

Small Cities Blues: Looking For Growth Factors In Small And Medium-Sized Cities, George A. Erickcek, Hannah J. Mckinney
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
The purpose of this exploratory study is to attempt to identify particular public policies which have the potential to increase the economic viability of smaller metropolitan areas and cities. We identify characteristics associated with smaller metro areas that performed better-than-expected (winners) and worse-than-expected (losers) during the 1990s, given their resources, industrial mix, and location as of 1990. Once these characteristics have been identified, we look for evidence that public policy choices may have promoted and enhanced a metro area's ability to succeed and to regain control of its own economic destiny. Methodologically, we construct a regression model which identifies the …

"The U.N. once dealt only with governments. By now we know that peace and prosperity cannot be achieved without partnership involving governments, international organizations, the business community and civil society. In today’s world we depend on each other.” Kofi Annan, UN Secretary (1999).
As emphasized by Secretary Annan’s quote, the global community is increasingly concerned with economic development and promotion of democracies is focusing on developing programs to stimulate partnerships among three distinct sectors: government sector, civil society and private sector, including locally based and international entrepreneurs. The modern organization is becoming increasingly informed in its strategies and practices by …
Social Underdevelopment In Sub-Saharan Africa, Michelle L. Wingo
Social Underdevelopment In Sub-Saharan Africa, Michelle L. Wingo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
For the past thirty years Africa has produced a more noticeably inferior reserve of human capital than other developing regions. This is puzzling because at the inception of independence, the future of Africa looked promising. However, during the 1970s both the political and economic situation in Africa began to deteriorate, and since 1980, the aggregate per capita GDP in sub-Saharan Africa has declined at almost one percent per fiscal year. Thirty-two countries are poorer now than they were twenty years ago, and sub-Saharan Africa is now the lowest-income region in the world despite the fact that during the last two …
