Developing A Web Analytics Strategy For The National Science Digital Library, Casey Jones, Sarah Giersch, Tamara Sumner, Michael Wright, Anita Coleman, Laura Bartolo

Faculty Publications

In August 2004, a two-day workshop was held on "Developing a Web Analytics Strategy for the National Science Digital Library (NSDL)". The workshop was sponsored by the NSDL Educational Impact and Evaluation Standing Committee (EIESC) and was jointly organized with the NSDL Technology Standing Committee (TSC). It brought together 26 representatives from government and industry, as well as some of the projects funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) NSDL program, to discuss how web metrics could be implemented in a pilot study to identify current NSDL use and develop strategies to support the collection of usage data across NSDL …

The Problems Of Subject Access To Visual Materials, John K. Jespersen, Heather P. Jespersen Sep 2004

The Problems Of Subject Access To Visual Materials, John K. Jespersen, Heather P. Jespersen

Faculty Publications

This article discussed the problem of giving subject access to works of art. We survey both concept-based and content-based access by computers and by index/catalogers respectively, as well as issues of interoperability, database and indexer consistency and cataloging standards. The authors, both of whom are trained art historians, question attempts to mystify fine art subject matter by the creation of clever library science systems that are executed by the naive. Only when trained art historians and knowledgeable catalogers are finally responsible for providing subject access to works of art, will true interoperability and consistency happen.

Merrill's Code For Classifiers, Anita Coleman Aug 2004

Merrill's Code For Classifiers, Anita Coleman

Faculty Publications

This Microsoft PowerPoint presentation of 25 slides includes several pictures and quotations about and from the "Code for Classifiers: Principles governing the consistent placing of books in a system of classification" by William Stetson Merrill. Coleman briefly explores the problems of classification presented in the Code, the model of collaboration that was used to develop the principles documented in the various editions of the Code, and how the Code can be used to develop a federated classification (classifying) model for digital library organization. The discussion also makes it clear that early American library classification was not just a "mark and …

Integration Of Non-Oai Resources For Federated Searching In Dlist, Anita Coleman, Paul Bracke, S. Karthik Jul 2004

Integration Of Non-Oai Resources For Federated Searching In Dlist, Anita Coleman, Paul Bracke, S. Karthik

Faculty Publications

Federated, distributed, and broadcast searches on the Internet depend on an underlying common metadata framework by which the information resources to be searched are organized. The Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) is designed to facilitate searches across OAI-compliant databases. Software such as Arc allow service providers to offer federated searching of multiple, OAI-compliant resources. The majority of web-accessible information resources, however, are not OAI-compliant. This article describes a process whereby readily available open source tools and customized scripts were developed for integrating metadata from non-OAI compliant repositories for a federated search. The work described is being carried …

Knowledge Structures And The Vocabulary Of Engineering Novices, Anita Coleman Jul 2004

Knowledge Structures And The Vocabulary Of Engineering Novices, Anita Coleman

Faculty Publications

This presentation is based on the refereed paper published in the ISKO 8 proceedings (see References for citation). It describes a study of the language used by undergraduate engineering students engaged in a civil engineering laboratory. Learnerâ s concepts and relationships in the area of soil consolidation were elicited in order to provide an understanding of the structural knowledge of novices and compare it with the knowledge structures of a human expert and a thesaurus tool. Concept maps and pathfinder networks were used to visualize and analyze the resultant knowledge structures of novice learners, expert, and tool. Results show that …

Content Analysis Of The Leading General Academic Databases, Kelly D. Blessinger, Maureen Olle-Lajoie Jan 2004

Content Analysis Of The Leading General Academic Databases, Kelly D. Blessinger, Maureen Olle-Lajoie

Faculty Publications

Title lists from the three leading general academic databases were compared to evaluate journal content. Some of the elements that were analyzed include subject coverage, the quality of titles provided, accessibility issues, and trends over time for these databases. While database title lists are now readily available on the Internet for comparison, as our article illustrates, these lists need further evaluation for proper assessment.

Taking Assessment On The Road: Utah Academic Librarians Focus On Distance Learners, Allyson Washburn, Rob Morrison Jan 2004

Taking Assessment On The Road: Utah Academic Librarians Focus On Distance Learners, Allyson Washburn, Rob Morrison

Faculty Publications

This paper presents the results of focus groups conducted by Utah academic librarians at branch campuses in Utah. Librarians met with distance learners on-site to gain insights into their information-seeking behavior and to learn if they are using library services. Students rely heavily on the web for information and also utilize known resources in friends and family. Marketing and publicizing library services through classes and at the delivery sites is vital. Students appreciate the services libraries offer and strongly prefer face-face instruction and direct assistance from a librarian.

80 Miles From The Nearest Library, With A Research Paper Due Monday: Extending Library Services To Distance Learners, Allyson Washburn, Jessica Draper

Faculty Publications

This presentation reports the results of a project to extend the services and resources of Brigham Young University's Harold B. Lee Library to distance-education students located in many areas of the world. Focusing on students enrolled in university-level English courses, the project team created a one-stop, integrated Web portal of library services and resources in Independent Study courses. This Library portal includes links to subscription databases, interlibrary loan, and personal reference services such as Ask a Librarian Live. The project team promoted faculty members' use of library research in the assignments for their Independent Study English courses. Finally, to ascertain …

To Ghana: February-March 2004, Keith Clouten

Faculty Publications

The first indication that Ghana might be on my travel itinerary came during the ASDAL Conference 2000 held at Andrews University. Vida Mensah, who is library director at Valley View University in Ghana, was among several librarians who came to that conference from places worldwide. As the conference workshops drew to a close, Vida stopped by my office to talk about Valley View’s need for a new library, and to ask for my help in preparing specifications for a building. Nothing was promised, but there was an underlying assumption that I would come to Valley View University sometime soon to …
