Canto Al Huaso, Canto Al Pueblo: La Música Y El Discurso Político De La Identidad Chilena Durante Los Años Sesenta Y La Unidad Popular, Greg Walz-Chojnacki
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Minimizing The Time Of Day Effect Through The Use Of Background Music, Amanda Wade
Minimizing The Time Of Day Effect Through The Use Of Background Music, Amanda Wade
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The time of day effect has been said to be involved with optimal arousal levels during an individual's preferred time of day. In the present study, invigorating background music was used to increase the arousal level of older adults in the afternoon in order to minimize the time of day effect that can be seen in test performance. The results indicated that invigorating background music had no significant effect on scores of a memory recognition task for older or younger adults. However, younger adults performed better than older adults in all testing combinations, older adults had significantly more false alarms …

Making The Scene: An Investigation Of The Rock And Roll Scenes Of Nashville, Tennessee, And Athens, Georgia, Kevin Jones Murphy
Making The Scene: An Investigation Of The Rock And Roll Scenes Of Nashville, Tennessee, And Athens, Georgia, Kevin Jones Murphy
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Making the Scene: An Investigation of the Rock and Roll Scenes of Nashville, Tennessee, and Athens, Georgia, takes a look at the ways in which both the identities of a music scene and the individuals taking part in that scene are created and maintained. Issues of identity are addressed by examining the roles performed by various members of the scene (musicians, soundmen, club owners, etc . . .), by focusing on the influence of landscape, and looking at the ways a scene’s members identify with the cultural region that surrounds their particular scene (in this case both scenes are located …

This Commentary on Lydia Pallas Loren, Untangling the Web of Music Copyrights, 53 Case W. Res. L. Rev. 673 (2003), observes that debates over a variety of copyright law issues can be - and in fact, often are - structured in narrative terms, rather than in terms of doctrine, policy, or empirical inquiry. I suggest a series of such narratives, each framed by a theme drawn from a feature film. The Commentary suggests that we should recognize more clearly the role of narrative in intellectual property discourse, and that intellectual property narratives should be examined critically.
The Cultural Significance Of The Pueblo Indian Flute, Kevin Brewer
The Cultural Significance Of The Pueblo Indian Flute, Kevin Brewer
Honors Theses
In recent years few other pieces of Native Americana have attracted more attention than the Native American Plains flute. It is widely admired for its beautifully lyric, yet often haunting tone quality. The layperson interested in non-western music can delight in its relative ease of performance, while those interested in Native crafts will find that with basic woodworking skills and a bit of patience a Plains flute is easy to construct. The Native American flute has inspired numerous recordings by such artists as R. Carlos Nakai, Doc Tate Nevaquaya, and the Grammy Award winning Mary Youngblood. There are hundreds of …

The Production Of Popular Music As A Confidence Game: The Case Of The Chicago Blues, David Grazian
The Production Of Popular Music As A Confidence Game: The Case Of The Chicago Blues, David Grazian
David Grazian
In this article I argue that the production of live music shares many formal properties with that of confidence games: specifically, (1) a set of structural relationships in which operators, ropers, insiders, shills and marks are enmeshed, (2) the deployment of carefully planned strategies of deception, and (3) a pattern of success owed in part to the moral and financial motivations of insiders, the willingness of the state to assist in the enterprise, and the desire among victims to be swayed by the production. Drawing on ethnographic research conducted in some of Chicago’s most popular blues clubs, I examine these …
Opportunities For Ethnography In The Sociology Of Music, David Grazian
Opportunities For Ethnography In The Sociology Of Music, David Grazian
David Grazian
Since the 1920s the sociological study of music has greatly benefited from the contributions made by researchers who use ethnographic methods in their work, and in this article I review some of this noteworthy scholarship. I argue that the last 10 years have seen a flourishing of ethnography on the relationships between music and, respectively, gender, place, and globalization. I conclude by identifying three topics that could benefit from further ethnographic study: the use of popular music in the marketing of urban areas; the production process within the culture industries; and the consumption of music in real time and space.
