The Geography Of Exploration: A Study In The Process Of Physical Exploration And Geographical Discovery, Joseph St.Onge May 2000

The Geography Of Exploration: A Study In The Process Of Physical Exploration And Geographical Discovery, Joseph St.Onge

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Exploration has been a common literary topic throughout the history of humans. However, much of this historical tradition has possessed a fairly narrow focus, emphasizing the drama and heroics of an individual explorer or concentrating on a description of a particular exploration. There has been little attempt at understanding the process of exploration and placing this important process in context with the historic and geographic phenomena that both affect and are affected by it. In this thesis, the author has broken the process of exploration down into a theoretical structure that is presented in a holistic model. This model has …

Riparian Zone Protection: The Use Of The Willingness-To-Accept Format In A Contingent Valuation Study, Catherine A. Broadhead May 2000

Riparian Zone Protection: The Use Of The Willingness-To-Accept Format In A Contingent Valuation Study, Catherine A. Broadhead

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The contingent valuation method (CVM) is used to evaluate the minimum compensation landowners require to forego production on farm riverbanks areas. The elicitation format used in the survey is a yes-no participation question followed by an open-ended question.

Chapter 2 presents the results of the survey. The Heckman approach is used in the econometric analysis to take care of the self-selection problem arising with this formatting of the questions. Chapter 3 is devoted to further examining the potential for undertaking valuation exercises using the willingness-to-accept format (WTA)

WTA estimates obtained with open-ended format are compared to WTA estimates obtained when …

Quality Of Life Related To Fear Of Falling And Hip Fracture In Older Women: A Time Trade Off Study, Glenn P. Salkeld, Ian D. Cameron, Robert Cumming, S Easter, J Seymour, S E. Kurrle, S Quine Jan 2000

Quality Of Life Related To Fear Of Falling And Hip Fracture In Older Women: A Time Trade Off Study, Glenn P. Salkeld, Ian D. Cameron, Robert Cumming, S Easter, J Seymour, S E. Kurrle, S Quine

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

OBJECTIVE:

To estimate the utility (preference for health) associated with hip fracture and fear of falling among older women.

DESIGN:

Quality of life survey with the time trade off technique. The technique derives an estimate of preference for health states by finding the point at which respondents show no preference between a longer but lower quality of life and a shorter time in full health.

SETTING:

A randomised trial of external hip protectors for older women at risk of hip fracture.

PARTICIPANTS:

194 women aged >/= 75 years enrolled in the randomised controlled trial or who were eligible for the …

Slope Instability, Hazard And Risk Associated With A Rainstorm Event - A Case Study, Phillip N. Flentje, Robin N. Chowdhury Jan 2000

Slope Instability, Hazard And Risk Associated With A Rainstorm Event - A Case Study, Phillip N. Flentje, Robin N. Chowdhury

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Over the last few decades there has been an increasing awareness of landslide hazard and risk in many coastal regions of Australia. Urban communities in hilly areas are, from time to time, adversely affected by rainfall-induced landsliding. However, acute awareness of hazard may be absent during periods between significant rainstorm events. In general, the serious consequences of landslides to property and life have been underestimated in Australia. It is now known that at least 80 deaths can be attributed to a number of landslides (Leiba, 1998). Some of these events have focussed the attention of the public, the most important …

Learner Concerns At The Missionary Training Center In The Technology Assisted Language Learning Program, Elaine T. Lindsay Jan 2000

Learner Concerns At The Missionary Training Center In The Technology Assisted Language Learning Program, Elaine T. Lindsay

Theses and Dissertations

Chapelle (1997) states the following as a vital question to be asked with respect to computer assisted language learning, “How good is the language experience in CALL for L2 learning?” (n.p.) In order to truly answer this question, investigators need to look to the learner and his concerns. In planning curriculum or designing a program, teachers and administrators normally look toward learner needs. However, these educators are also known to fully implement a new program, at times, without consideration of learner concerns. This appears to be especially true with the use of technology in the second language classroom. Research is …
