ACL Conference 1999 at Lee University was a great deal of fun. The text comes from my notes rather than letters to my friend and business partne1; Mark Vette,; although I kept in touch with him this year via e-mail. I hope you enjoy follow ing me around again as you read "Another Side of Conference. "

While a number of Christian librarians have explored the implications of the Christian world view for particular issues in library practice, few have attempted to develop a thoroughgoing philosophy of Christian librarians/zip. Those who have done so have generally failed to center their proposals around the Christian view of truth. The knowability, objectivity, unity, practicality, and spirituality of truth should impact the way librarians at Christian colleges carry out major library functions, including collection development, reference services, bibliographic instruction, research and publication, and management.

In my last column, I discussed the issue of faculty status, trying to analyze why librarians have failed to achieve their most desired target -- academic respectability. I concluded that faculty culture does not accept librarians as equals. Yes, librarians may be useful -- they may eve be expert in what they do -- but they are different. Faculty may be ready to grant librarians something, but it is not equal status. Maybe it is time to examine the need for status that librarians exhibit.

I approach the topic of Internet filters as a librarian at a Christian liberal arts institution of higher education, PointLomaNazarene University (PLNU). The following should not be taken as an official statement regarding PLNU policy. No doubt Christian librarians at public libraries find they must address these issues differently from those encountered at Christian campuses.

Will Internet filters deliver us from evil or are they a necessary evil? Are Christian colleges using Internet filters? If so, which filters? What roles are Christian librarians assuming in this decision-making process?

This article intends to give reasons that, in the mind of this author, justify Internet filtering in the author's library on the campus of Liberty University. These are given in a very brief format, and are not intended to be inclusive, but rather to fos ter ideas, debate, and discussion.

A computer's operating system is the "central nervous system." This software controls what the computer system does internally. That is, it controls the flow of information into the computer. processes the data or information and then moves the data into a file stored on the magnetic disk or displayed on a workstation screen or perhaps printed.

rrnerly Pasadena College (Est. 1902), the spiritual, academic and cultural community that would become Point Loma Nazarene University moved to San Diego from Pasadena, California in 1973. Spanish for Hill, the word Loma is both an apt description of the site on which the University rests and an indication of the cultural influence of the Spanish on the region. Located on cliffs above the Pacific Ocean, PLNU is graced by ocean views at nearly every turn.

The Association of Christian Librarians in recognition of outstanding contribution to Christian librarianship awards the Emily Russel Award. The following article is a revision of the Emily Russel Award presentation made by Sheila Carib/om during the 1997 ACL Conference held at Northwestem College in St. Paul, Minnesota. In summary form, we have attempted to highlight the careers of the 1997 Emily Russel Award recipients.

Should librarians have faculty status? Why? The answer to the first question, as given by librarians, is normally "Yes." It is time to examine the second question-the Y factor. There are a number of reasons that librarians seek faculty status. Those who teach-or give library instruction consider their functions similar to those that faculty perform. This argument applies especially to classroom situations where librarians teach information literacy, which in the old days was called bibliographic instruction. Reference librarians, however, also believe they teach when they help students discover information. Therefore, should not all campus personnel who teach students- including librarians-be …

It is my honor and privilege this evening to present the Emily Russel Award to one of the finest Christian Librarians it has been our collective privilege to know. For me, it is even more; it is sheer joy to give tribute to a woman who has during our longstanding professional relationship been a source of inspiration, a model of integrity, and a continuing influence. Probably all of us in this room can list only a few people besides family members who have made a major impact on us. I would list this lady's name.

Theological schools in the two-thirds world struggle with untrained staff and inadequate resources. On-site evaluations, training workshops, automation projects and blitz cataloging are four ways Christian librarians can assist through short visits overseas. Good communication and preparation are essential for a successful visit. Follow-up communication can tum a short visit into a long-term partnership.

St. Petersburgl998 was my first overseas trip ever! And I wouldn't have missed it! My husband and I were based at St. Petersburg Christian University, where my work involved cataloging and helping with other assorted library matters. Our original four-month stint evolved into a seven-month stay.

This year's conference was different. I brought my sisters, Mary Mitchell and Sandra Edster, along. We enjoyed some real vacation time, although they did more vacationing than I did. Still, ACL Conference offers so many opportunities for fellowship that it is the most pleasant of work.

The progression from one century to the next has traditionally brought us changes in attitude, invention and convention. We want to see the instant when one century slips away and another begins as momentous. With that spirit in mind we of the Editorial Staff here at TCL have made some changes. It is my hope that this has been apparent to you from the moment you first laid eyes on this issue. With the beginning of Volume 43 The Christian Librarian has a new look.
The Christian View Of Vocation For Librarians, John Allen Delivuk
The Christian View Of Vocation For Librarians, John Allen Delivuk

Like two brothers, western civilization and Christianity grew up together. Christianity gave the civilization its virtues, its view of work, and its view of service. With the decline of Christian influence, there is an increasing separation between virtue, service and work. This has led to vocational crisis in professions which have described themselves as vocations. Nurses, doctors and teachers have noticed the problem. This paper will make some observations concerning the crisis, give historical and biblical insights into our view of vocation, discuss some errors with the viewpoints, give some proposals for improving the situation and conclude with a summary.

Maybe college and university administrators have had it .right all the time-and librarians have been out of touch with reality. Is it possible that one of our most vocal causes has been a misguided one?
What I am talking about is the size of library budgets for the purchase of information resources. As colleges and universities experienced rapid growth following World War II, libraries shared in the largesse that resulted from increasing enrollments. New library buildings sprouted everywhere; budgets for learning resources expanded to fill the buildings. Life was good.

I am fairly new to the Association of Christian Librarians and librarianship. This year, the 43rd conference, was my fourth ACL conference. I have been a reference librarian for about the same number of years. I felt a bit lost at my first conference. I would imagine most people do. I was just beginning to pursue my MLS and, most of my experience had been in public libraries. So, classes that focused on academic issues didn't mean too much to me. However, other conference goers helped me choose a few subjects that could be adapted to public library service and …

he Board of Directors of the Association of Christian Librarians honored an unsung hero when it selected Stephen P. Brown to receive the 1999 Emily Russel Award. While his contributions to ACL may be unknown by many, they are certainly known and appreciated by those who have been involved in the leadership of this Association anytime in the last twenty plus years. Perhaps no one knows all of the things he has done behind the scenes to keep this Association functioning and viable.

The first TCL issue of the new year is now under my belt. As the new Design Editor, the January 2000 TCL was a labor of love. It was also one of trial and error. I learned how to logically arrange the pages and articles within the issue. I experimented with various graphical changes but tried to keep a recognizable style in the grand TLC tradition.
