Furthering The Knowledge Commons In Our Field, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

This paper suggests a variety of ways to advance the knowledge commons of third sector studies through the strategic use of electronic technology. Ways I have discussed include identifying and promulgating new associative forms of scholarly publishing, exploring the use of multi-media in data collection and presentation, defining and implementing strategic uses of XML, exploring and adopting new and emerging forms of trans-organizational groupware more suitable for commons, and encouraging and promulgating open standards.

The Use And Value Of Scholarly Journals, Carol Tenopir, Donald W. King Nov 2000

The Use And Value Of Scholarly Journals, Carol Tenopir, Donald W. King

School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works

This paper summarized results of 13,591 readership survey responses of scientists and reviews of hundreds of other readership studies reported in a recent book: Towards Electronic Journals: Realities for Scientists, Librarians, and Publishers (Tenopir & King, 2000). In particular, survey results reveal amounts and trends of reading and information-seeking patterns, such as how readers identify articles that are read and where they obtain them. The survey results also demonstrate the usefulness and value of scientific scholarly journals. Past results suggest that electronic journals and digital full-text databases will play a major role in the future of scientific scholarly journals …

The Cost And Price Dilemma Of Scholarly Journals, Donald W. King, Carol Tenopir Nov 2000

The Cost And Price Dilemma Of Scholarly Journals, Donald W. King, Carol Tenopir

School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works

This paper examines the overall cost of the scientific scholarly journal system and find that the relative system costs have not increased since the late 1970s. Why then have journal prices skyrocketed over this same period? We first describe typical scholarly publishing costs, because to understand journal prices one must understand the factors that affect these costs. We then describe some factors that have likely contributed to spiraling price increases and changes in journal subscription demand. Finally we discuss some alternative pricing policies that might help in the future. This paper summarizes results reported in a recent book: Towards Electronic …

This study compares and contrasts InfoTrac and ProQuest primarily as full-text resources to supplement retrieval of references contained in the CINAHL database. These databases are analyzed by examining their scope in terms of the number and types of serials covered within specific areas using Ulrich's subject headings. Another important aspect of this study relates to the effectiveness of the two search engines for end-user retrieval and collection development.

Nordinfo: Research And Academic Library Cooperation Across National Borders, Sigrún Klara Hannesdóttir Oct 2000

Nordinfo: Research And Academic Library Cooperation Across National Borders, Sigrún Klara Hannesdóttir

E-JASL 1999-2009 (Volumes 1-10)

NORDINFO, the Nordic Council for Scientific Information was founded as a bridge between research libraries and the growing information and documentation sector. NORDINFO’s secretariat was set up in Helsinki, Finland, and some permanent staff 6 was appointed to coordinate the activities. The full name behind the acronym was “The Nordic Cooperative Council for Research Libraries and Scientific Information and Documentation.”

When looking at the history of Nordic research library cooperation, it is clear that the members of the committee that suggested the establishment of an institution that would combine librarianship, documentation and information were people that understood what developments were …

Moving Toward Electronic Journals, Carol Tenopir

School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works

PRINT STILL PREDOMINATES in journal publishing, but that role may soon fade. Too slowly or too quickly, steadily or in fits and starts (depending on your perspective and patience level), scholarly journals are moving toward reliance on digital forms. This is happening in part because librarians, scholars, and even some publishers are unhappy about the current state of print journals.
