Grading Error Reduces Grower Incentive To Increase Prune Quality, Jennifer S. James, James A. Chalfant, Nathalie Lavoie, Richard J. Sexton Dec 2000

Grading Error Reduces Grower Incentive To Increase Prune Quality, Jennifer S. James, James A. Chalfant, Nathalie Lavoie, Richard J. Sexton

Agribusiness

Grading is important to ensure the production of high-quality foods, but It Is usually done with error, distorting market signals and diminishing Incentives to produce high-quality products. Size is the main quality criterion for dried prunes and the crucial characteristic In determining prune value. We studied the economic effects of errors In commodity grading, focusing In particular on the Implications of one-way (asymmetric) grading errors, namely when small, low quality product Is erroneously classified as high quality, but not vice versa. In an application to the California prune Industry, we estimated the extent to which large prunes are undervalued and …

The Design Of Supranational Organizations For The Provision Of International Public Goods: Global Environmental Protection, E. Wesley F. Peterson Dec 2000

The Design Of Supranational Organizations For The Provision Of International Public Goods: Global Environmental Protection, E. Wesley F. Peterson

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

An international environmental organization would need to be loosely structured initially with a focus on a narrow range of environmental issues. It also would need to emphasize consensus and limit the scope of its interventions to avoid defections by important participants. The benefits of such an organization include the potential for achieving more nearly optimal levels of environmental protection, cost savings from reduction of duplication and managerial economies of scale, and the strengthening of environmental interests in negotiations on the coordination of the environmental regime with other international regimes such as those focusing on trade or development.

Conflicts Over Farming Practices In Canada: The Role Of Interactive Conflict Resolution Approaches, Lorne Owen, Wayne Howard, Mark Waldron Oct 2000

Conflicts Over Farming Practices In Canada: The Role Of Interactive Conflict Resolution Approaches, Lorne Owen, Wayne Howard, Mark Waldron

Agribusiness

An increasing number of articles in professional and scientific journals, as well as in the public press, give evidence to a rising number of conflicts that exist in rural communities. These conflicts arise from changes in farming practices, the increasing number of large-scale production units, resource use, and demographics. Fair, effective and efficient approaches to resolve these conflicts are of increasing interest and importance. An interactive conflict resolution (ICR) approach that focuses on communication and positive social interactions may be a preferred approach for resolving conflicts. The role of ICR approaches in addressing conflicts arising from farming and agri-business practices …

Department of Agricultural Economics: Presentations, Working Papers, and Gray Literature

This paper summarizes the results of a survey of a stratified, random sample of 630 hog operations in Indiana and Nebraska. The survey was conducted in March and April, 2000 with support of a research grant to contribute to the development of a knowledge base to guide the design and implementation of effective risk management programs, policies and tools.

This staff paper provides selected summary statistics with limited analysis of size of operation and state effects. Information is presented on sources and responses to risk as well as producers' views on selected agricultural policy, risk management and marketing issues. Use …

Bioeconomic Household Modelling For Agricultural Intensification, Gideon Kruseman Sep 2000

Bioeconomic Household Modelling For Agricultural Intensification, Gideon Kruseman

Gideon Kruseman

The study develops a bio-economic modelling framework that permits simultaneous assessment of the effects of technology change and policy measures on household welfare and agro-ecological sustainability indicators. The bio-economic modelling framework expands traditional farm household models to incorporate direct consumption utility functions, to allow for multiple objectives and to permit a meaningful interface with biophysical process models. The resulting model combines econometrically estimated equations in a mathematical programming framework. Model outcomes are analysed using metamodelling tecyhniques.

The bio-economic modelling framework is relevant for policy analysis related to resource degradation in developing countries. The model is applied to Cercle de Koutiala …

Intertemporal And Interspatial Variability Of Climate Change On Dryland Winter Wheat Yield Trends, Saleem Shaik, Glenn A. Helmers Aug 2000

Intertemporal And Interspatial Variability Of Climate Change On Dryland Winter Wheat Yield Trends, Saleem Shaik, Glenn A. Helmers

Department of Agricultural Economics: Presentations, Working Papers, and Gray Literature

The importance of climate (temperature and precipitation) variability on Nebraska dryland winter wheat yield trend is examined. The use of short term (1956-1999) climatic divisional panel data (interspatial) and long term (1909-1999) state time series data (intertemporal) is to address the predictability power of estimating the yield trends accounting for climate variability.

Farm-Level Characteristics Of Southern Nebraska Farms/Ranches With Annually-Planted Crops, John M. Antle, Susan M. Capalbo, Christine N. Heggem, Richard T. Clark, Nancy Norton, Roger Selley

Department of Agricultural Economics: Presentations, Working Papers, and Gray Literature

The information presented in this report represents data collected from farming and ranching operations in the southern two tiers of counties in Nebraska. This study was based on a random sample of 15 1 southern Nebraska farms that have annually-planted crop acreage. Information was obtained for the 1997 crop year. This data set is referred to as the MSU/UNL survey data.

From the MSU/UNL survey data, the average size of the farming operations in the survey, in 1997, was 1,3 16 acres. Of these, 856 acres were planted to annual crops, and the remaining 460 acres included 61 acres in …
