Review Of: Australian Rock Art: A New Synthesis, Paul Faulstich Oct 1994

Review Of: Australian Rock Art: A New Synthesis, Paul Faulstich

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

Rock-art studies have now come of age, and are among the most fertile explorations of expressive culture. Through an interdisciplinary approach to its study, we have expanded our knowledge into the realms of aesthetics, belief systems, and social structures. Australian rock an is particularly significant, since it is a visual expression that has been practiced by contemporary as well as prehistoric Aboriginals. Robert Layton's most recent book -his "new synthesis" of Australian rock art- is an ambitious and successful analysis of Aboriginal rock art from across the continent.

Archaeological excavations in the North Atlantic basin over the past two decades have recovered large amounts of fishbones from datable deposits extending back over 8000 years in some areas. Coverage of the last 1000 years (with particular emphasis on the climatic cooling of the “Little Ice Age”) is increasingly complete. Recent research makes it possible to reconstruct live lengths from commonly recovered fishbone elements. Preliminary findings indicate that cod of 1 to 1.5 m were being regularly taken in the eleventh to nineteenth centuries throughout the North Atlantic. Changes in fish size and mix of species taken probably reflect technological …

Problems And Strategies In The Decipherment Of Meroitic, Richard A. Lobban Jr. Jan 1994

Problems And Strategies In The Decipherment Of Meroitic, Richard A. Lobban Jr.

Faculty Publications

This article offers a preliminary report on the evolution of the study of Meroitic language and on developing a strategy for expanding its translation from one or two dozen words to some greater number. The strategy is complicated by the essential absence of bilingual texts. Thus, this strategy seeks to synthesize a bilingual environment for the study of Meroitic inscriptions. The first part of this article will review the position of Meroitic in African language systems and discuss why so little progress has been made in the decipherment of Africa's oldest written language after Egyptian hieroglyphics.

104-Preliminary Assessment Of Archaeobotanical Remains From The Phase Ii Testing Of Sites In The New Lenox Park District Archaeological Project, New Lenox, Illinois (Midwest Archaeological Research Services), William M. Cremin

Reports of Investigations

In late 1993, Midwest Archaeological Research Services {MARS) conducted limited test excavations at a series of sites recorded earlier during Phase I reconnaissance survey of a 200 acre parcel for the New Lenox Park District in Will County, Illinois. The study area (located in the NE 1/4 of Section 15; the NW 1/4, NW 1/4 of section 14; and the sw 1/4, SE 1/4, sw 1/4, SE 1/4 of Section 10, New Lenox Township (T35N, R11E), for the most part, lies south and on the inside of a sweeping bend in the course of Hickory creek, a tributary of the …

105-Phase I Archaeological Assessment Of The Coldbrook Ada Upgrade, Coldbrook Park, Kalamazoo County, Michigan (Er-940188), William M. Cremin, Arthur Desjardins

Reports of Investigations

On 16 Jul 94, authorization (P.O. #35356) was received from the Office of County Controller for a Phase I archaeological survey of the proposed ADA upgrade at Coldbrook Park in Section 34 of Charleston Township (T2S R9W), Kalamazoo County, Michigan. A literature and site file search was initiated, and on 18 Jul onsite evaluation of the project area was undertaken in order to determine whether the proposed construction activity would adversely impact potentially significant archaeological resources.

Inasmuch as a grant application to fund the proposed construction activity was pending, and the results of our research were entirely negative, our recommendation …

Sanitation And Parasitism At Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, Karl J. Reinhard Jan 1994

Sanitation And Parasitism At Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, Karl J. Reinhard

Karl Reinhard Publications

One focus of historical archaeology at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, West Virginia, is tracing the development of sanitation at the town through the 1800s and 1900s. Historical documentation indicates that there was a degree of resistance to the modernization of village sanitation. This study attempts to verify this resistance through examination of privy soils for parasites indicative of fecalborne disease, specifically the helminth species Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichuris trichiura. The presence of these parasites in the early 1900s would indicate that fecal-borne disease due to poor sanitation continued to be an aspect of town life. The analysis revealed the …

Otitis Media, Mastoiditis, And Infracranial Lesions In Two Plains Indian Children, Robert W. Mann, Douglas W. Owsley, Karl J. Reinhard Jan 1994

Otitis Media, Mastoiditis, And Infracranial Lesions In Two Plains Indian Children, Robert W. Mann, Douglas W. Owsley, Karl J. Reinhard

Karl Reinhard Publications

One disease condition that is common to nearly all children is otitis media, also known as middle ear disease. Although most people speak of it as a middle ear "infection," other causes such as neoplasm (tumor) can result in manifestations and symptoms mimicking an infectious process. This paper presents findings related to osseous lesions in two Indian children, approximately three to five years of age, who died with otitis media and infracranial lesions. Through macroscopic and radiographic analysis, it is possible to show that one child probably suffered from tuberculosis and the other from histiocytosis X. From an epidemiological and …

Most scholars are understandably preoccupied with the impact of Europeans on native peoples who were passive, unwilling, or resistant participants in that contact. We present in this chapter a different case. The Missouri River tribes, including the Omaha and Ponca, willingly engaged in relations with Euramericans, especially in the fur trade that dominated interaction in this region. The time frame for this study is 1780- 1820, a period when interaction between individual traders and Native Americans was replaced by the dominance of the American Fur Company in organized exploitation of the Missouri River lands and peoples. This involvement later contributed …
