On November 17, the Northeast Archives of Folklore and Oral History and the Maine Arts Commission sponsored the "Traditional Culture in the Classroom" workshop at the University of Maine, Orono campus. The workshop was attended by elementary and secondary educators from across the state. Sessions addressed the use of folklore and oral history in the classroom, suggestions and techniques for projects, and classroom activities. The afternoon forum provided the opportunity for educators to share their experiences in developing and coordinating folklife and oral history projects. Municipal leaders need current information about alternative disposal methods to make rational decisions on handling their town's waste. To provide an overview of landfilling and other waste-handling methods used in the upper New England states, a group of university researchers from New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont initiated a study of landfills and solid waste management practices. The study involved a comprehensive mail survey of municipalities in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. This report focuses upon and discusses the results of the landfill and solid waste management survey for Maine.

George Criner and Chet Rock of the University of Maine, and students from their Waste Management class analyzed household wastes from 33 residences in Orono. The purpose of the analysis was to obtain an estimate of total weekly residential waste weight and its composition by category (paper versus glass, etc.).

This handbook is designed to be a source of information for Maine towns interested in conserving wildlife habitats through their comprehensive plans and land-use ordinances. It was written in response to the growing need to conserve local habitats for wildlife in Maine. New land-use and planning legislation resulting from increased development pressure requires towns to plan for wildlife habitat. The process of integrating habitat conservation into local land-use planning described in this handbook combines an ecosystem approach with protection of species of special interest (i.e., rare, endangered, game, and nongame species).
