A Study For A Lexicon Of Laguna Keresan, Hilaire Paul Valiquette Dec 1990

A Study For A Lexicon Of Laguna Keresan, Hilaire Paul Valiquette

Anthropology ETDs

Laguna Keres is one of seven Keresan dialects spoken by the Pueblo peoples in New Mexico. The present study focuses on lexical categories in general, and on verb morphology and classification in particular. Language can be construed either as a system governed by universal rules, or as an idiosyncratic listing; the two constructions balance and define each other. In language description, these two approaches usually appear as "grammars" or "lexicons". For Laguna Keres, I argue that division into lexical categories and sub-categories must be based on semantics, morphology, syntax, and phonology.

After a sketch of Laguna Keres, I review previous …

Prehistoric Archeology And Paleoenvironments In Hidalgo And Willacy Counties, South Texas: Results Of The Phase Ii Excavations, C. Britt Bousman, Steve A. Tomka, Gail L. Bailey

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

In May 1989 through July 1989, archeological and geomorphological investigations were conducted at five prehistoric archeological sites impacted by drainage ditch construction in Hidalgo and Willacy counties. These investigations were sponsored by Hidalgo County Drainage District No. I and Willacy County Drainage District No. I as part of a continuing program of cultural resources studies along the drainage ditch construction right-of-way. One site, 41WYI40, is situated on a low rise adjacent to a main channel of the ditch and lacks sufficient Holocene sediments to contain archeological materials in good context. However, a tortoise, cf. Gopherus hexagollarus, was recovered, and the …

Phase Ii Historical Investigations At Justiceberg Reservoir, Garza And Kent Counties, Texas, Martha Doty Freeman, Douglas K. Boyd

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Phase II cultural resources investigations at the proposed Justiceburg Reservoir in Garza and Kent counties, Texas, conducted in 1988-1989 included work at four historic sites, the recording of a previously unrecorded historic site, and development of two National Register contexts. This report documents the archeological work at the sites and presents data that resulted from in-depth research concerning the history of the use and development of these sites. In addition, the report presents two historic contexts which were developed in order to provide tools for the assessment of sites within the project area and, at the same time, to present …

This appendix describes the stratigraphic and pedogenic characteristics of each trench excavated during subsurface geomorphic reconnaissance conducted as part of the testing phase at Justiceburg Reservoir. Seventy-seven trenches were excavated during the course of the project. The overall results and interpretations of the geomorphic phase of the investigation are presented in Chapter 4. The data presented in this appendix are based on field descriptions of the sediment columns exposed by the trenches. The neutral term tlzone" was adopted to allow both stratigraphic and pedogenic variation in sediment columns to be described under the same nomenclature. For each zone, the depth, …

Religion And The Body: Rematerializing The Human Body In The Social Sciences Of Religion, Meredith B. Mcguire Sep 1990

Religion And The Body: Rematerializing The Human Body In The Social Sciences Of Religion, Meredith B. Mcguire

Sociology & Anthropology Faculty Research

The social sciences of religion could be transformed by taking seriously the fact that humans are embodied. A new conceptualization of a mindful body has the potential to lead to profound shifts in how we view our subjects and their worlds. Our research strategies need to take into account that believers (and nonbelievers) are not merely disembodied spirits, but that they experience a material world in and through their bodies. Greater awareness of the social and political uses of human bodies should guide our research and theory.

Non-Insulin Dependent (Type Ii Diabetes) In The Eastern Cherokee, Patricia Ann Quiggins Aug 1990

Non-Insulin Dependent (Type Ii Diabetes) In The Eastern Cherokee, Patricia Ann Quiggins

Doctoral Dissertations

Type II (Non-insulin dependent) diabetes is a serious problem for the Eastern Cherokee affecting 8% of the total population and 25% of the population over the age of 35 years. However, there have been no published epidemiological data on diabetes among the Eastern Cherokee since 1965. This study describes the current (1988) epidemiology of diabetes in the Eastern Cherokee population calculated from Indian Health Service Data, compares these rates to the U.S. general population, and examines demographic, cultural, and social factors that affect distribution of diabetes among the Cherokee.

Diabetes was determined to be most common in individuals ages forty-five …

Cranial Allometry And The Evolution Of The Domestic Dog, Darcy F. Morey Aug 1990

Cranial Allometry And The Evolution Of The Domestic Dog, Darcy F. Morey

Doctoral Dissertations

Domestication is usually defined as a process involving human subjugation of other animal or plant species. From this perspective, it is often presumed that morphological changes in domestic animals are the product of conscious or unconscious human selection. A broader evolutionary perspective does not make this presumption.

The origin of the domestic dog (Canis familiaris) is best understood as a consequence of human adoption of wolf pups (Canis lupus) some 12,000 years ago. Young wolf pups growing up in human society formed their primary social bonds with humans. The radically altered circumstances experienced by these early …

Changes In Stature And Health Status As Related To The Emergence Of Diabetes Among Eastern Cherokee Indians In North Carolina, Deann Lee Stivers Aug 1990

Changes In Stature And Health Status As Related To The Emergence Of Diabetes Among Eastern Cherokee Indians In North Carolina, Deann Lee Stivers

Doctoral Dissertations

Health conditions such as the presence of infectious and acute diseases, substandard living conditions, and nutritional status may influence the attainment of adult stature among Eastern Cherokees living in the western North Carolina mountains in the late Nineteenth Century. Stature measurements and genealogical information were collected in 1892 by Fred Starr under the direction of Franz Boas. Living descendants of individuals measured in 1892 were identified. This sample was measured and interviewed. These data sets were used to access the attainment of height among adolescents and adults.

Historical photos taken by Mooney (circa 1880) provided visual image of fat patterning …

Immunoglobulin Haplotypes – Markers Of Reproductive Success, Joan C. Stevenson, Moses S. Schanfield, Michael H. Crawford, Phillip Mark Everson

Anthropology Faculty and Staff Publications

Immunoglobulin haplotypes are highly polymorphic and are useful for analyses of both macro- and microdifferentiation of populations. The origins of this diversity are not known, but recent reports suggest strong selection at this locus. Increased rates of first-trimester spontaneous abortions have been reported when parents share GM phenotypes. Reduced fertility has been observed in mixed European descent white and Hutterite populations when both parents share immunoglobulin haplotypes. Population samples with completed family information and GM haplotype data are rare; the objective here is to provide this information on another sample. A sample of 242 Mennonite couples with mothers older than …
