Pig Vocalizations Under Selected Husbandry Practices, Hongwei Xin, James A. Deshazer, D. W. Leger Nov 1989

Pig Vocalizations Under Selected Husbandry Practices, Hongwei Xin, James A. Deshazer, D. W. Leger

Hongwei Xin

Acoustical characteristics of vocalizations of sows, piglets, and nursery pigs under selected husbandry practices were analyzed with a digital signal processing system. The duration (D) and major energy-resonance frequency (P) for each call were determined as follows: a) processing of piglets (D = 0.81 s and f* = 3 700 Hz); b) food anticipation of breeding-gestation sows (2.50 s and 3 000 Hz); c) isolation of piglet (0.34 s and 500, 3 500 Hz); d) startling of nursery pigs (0.29 s and 900 Hz); e) sows in heat (3.07 s and 1 375 Hz); f) farrowing (0.10 s and 3 …

A Fresh Look At The Rotten Kid Theorem, Ted Bergstrom Sep 1989

A Fresh Look At The Rotten Kid Theorem, Ted Bergstrom

Ted C Bergstrom

Gary Becker's ``Rotten Kid Theorem'' asserts that if all family members receive gifts of money income from a benevolent household member, then even if the household head does not precommit to an incentive plan for family members, it will be in the interest of selfish family members to maximize total family income. We show by examples that the Rotten Kid theorem is not true without assuming transferable utility. We find a simple condition on utility functions that is necessary and sufficient for there to be the kind of transferable utility needed for a Rotten Kid Theorem. While restrictive, these conditions …

The Effects Of Cohort Size On Marriage Markets In Twentieth Century Sweden, Ted Bergstrom, David Lam Sep 1989

The Effects Of Cohort Size On Marriage Markets In Twentieth Century Sweden, Ted Bergstrom, David Lam

Ted C Bergstrom

Large, short-run fluctuations in the birth rate have been an important demographic feature of industrialized, low-fertility populations in the twentieth century. Since females normally marry men who are two or three years older than themselves, these fluctuations result in large imbalances between the size of male and female cohorts who would normally marry each other. These imbalances must somehow be resolved, either by a change in traditional patterns of age at marriage or by changes in the proportions of the population of one sex or the other who ever marry.

Following a suggestion of Becker (1974,1981), we have developed a …

Ello …

The Social Environment And The Adaptation Of Mothers Of Physically Handicapped Children, Heather Banis, Jan Wallander, James Varni, Lina Babani, Christine Dehaan, Karen Wilcox Aug 1989

The Social Environment And The Adaptation Of Mothers Of Physically Handicapped Children, Heather Banis, Jan Wallander, James Varni, Lina Babani, Christine Dehaan, Karen Wilcox

Heather Banis

Evaluated relationships between social environmental characteristics and adaptation in 50 mothers of congenitally physically handicapped 6- to 11-year-old children. Mothers reported on utilitarian resources, child adjustment, psychosocial family resources, service utilization, and three dimensions of adaptation. Analyses of the concurrent correlational design indicated significant proportions of the variance in mental and social functioning were explained by features of the social environment. Mother's physical health could not be significantly predicted. Consistently strong contributions were made by psychosocial family resources in all adaptation domains.

A Prospective Study Of Disordered Eating Among College Students, Ruth H. Striegel-Moore, Lisa R. Silberstein, Peter Frensch, Judith Rodin Aug 1989

A Prospective Study Of Disordered Eating Among College Students, Ruth H. Striegel-Moore, Lisa R. Silberstein, Peter Frensch, Judith Rodin

Ruth Striegel Weissman

The prevalence of disordered eating among college students was assessed at the beginning and the end of the freshman year. The study aimed to identify factors related to worsening of disordered eating during the year. Questionnaires were completed by 590 males and 450 females at baseline and 546 males and 403 females at follow-up. At baseline, the prevalence of bulimia nervosa was 3.8% for females and 0.2% for males. The prevalence of ordered eating symptoms was considerably higher. The prevalence of bulimia nervosa at follow-up was virtually unchanged. However, many students experienced an onset of disordered eating during the year. …

Cooperation In A Repeated Prisoner's Dilemma With Ostracism, Eric Bennett Rasmusen, David Hirshleifer Aug 1989

Cooperation In A Repeated Prisoner's Dilemma With Ostracism, Eric Bennett Rasmusen, David Hirshleifer

Eric Bennett Rasmusen

The unique Nash equilibrium of the finitely repeated n-person Prisoners' Dilemma calls for defection in all rounds. One way to enforce cooperation in groups is ostracism: players who defect are expelled. If the group's members prefer not to diminish its size, ostracism hurts the legitimate members of the group as well as the outcast, putting the credibility of the threat in doubt. Nonetheless, we show that ostracism can be effective in promoting cooperation with either finite or infinite rounds of play. The model can be applied to games other than the Prisoners' Dilemma, and ostracism can enforce inefficient as well …

Sociobiological And Psychosocial Models Of Physical Attractiveness Phenomena: A Confrontation Of Theories, James M. Donovan Aug 1989

Sociobiological And Psychosocial Models Of Physical Attractiveness Phenomena: A Confrontation Of Theories, James M. Donovan

James M. Donovan

A majority of cultural anthropologists underestimate the value of sociobiological theory for a better understanding of human behavior. This essay attempts to demonstrate the shortcomings of this position by presenting an illustrative problem. Sexually asymmetrical physical attractiveness phenomena are examined first from a traditional psychosocial model. In its pure form this model is unable to account for the known data; when supplemented by sociobiological premises, however, these difficulties are resolved.

Political Science Publishers: What Do The Citations Reveal?, Stephen Mcginty

Stephen McGinty

This study investigates political science monograph publishing patterns through an examination of journal citations. All citations to monographs in the American Political Science Review and the Journal of Politics for 1974-1975 and 1984-1985 were tallied and categorized. Lists of the most frequently cited publishers for both time periods are resented. Citation frequencies of conference proceedings, unpublished sources, foreign language material, and government documents are explored. Centralization of resource use by scholars is examined by looking at what percentage of all monograph citations are accounted for by the twenty-five most active publishers. The results depict a significant amount of change over …

How A Personal Document's Intended Use Or Purpose Affects Its Classification In An Office., Barbara H. Kwasnik Jun 1989

How A Personal Document's Intended Use Or Purpose Affects Its Classification In An Office., Barbara H. Kwasnik

Barbara H. Kwasnik

This paper reports on the findings of a larger case study that attempts to describe how people organize documents in their own offices. In that study, several dimensions along which people make classificatory decisions were identified. Of these, the use of to which a document is put emerged as a strong determiner of that document’s classification. The method of analysis is reviewed, and examples of the different kinds of uses are presented, demonstrating that it is possible to describe a wide variety of specific instances using a closed set of descriptors. The suggestion is made that, in designing systems for …

Product Quality With Information Dissemination And Switching Costs, Eric Bennett Rasmusen Jun 1989

Product Quality With Information Dissemination And Switching Costs, Eric Bennett Rasmusen

Eric Bennett Rasmusen

Klein and Leffler (1981) construct a model in which expected future prices exceed marginal costs so that sellers are willing to maintain high quality for the sake of future profits. How profits are dissapated under free entry, and whether there is a continuum of equilibria, are questions not fully resolved. I contstruct a formal model simpler than any now existing in which free entry and exogenous fixed costs uniquely determine the price of output and the amount sold per firm.

Family Resources As Resistance Factors For Psychological Maladjustment In Chronically Ill And Handicapped Children, Heather Banis, Jan Wallander, James Varni, Lina Babani, Karen Wilcox May 1989

Family Resources As Resistance Factors For Psychological Maladjustment In Chronically Ill And Handicapped Children, Heather Banis, Jan Wallander, James Varni, Lina Babani, Karen Wilcox

Heather Banis

The hypothesis that their psychological adjustment is related in part to resources present in their families was investigated in 153 children, age 4–16, who had one of five chronic physical disorders: juvenile diabetes, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, chronic obesity, spina bifida, or cerebral palsy. Their mothers completed standardized psychometric instruments to measure specific dimensions of family psychological and utilitarian resources and of child adjustment. Variation in children's psychological adjustment was related both to their psychological and utilitarian family resources. Psychological family resources contributed uniquely to the prediction of adjustment beyond that provided by utilitarian family resources. These results are discussed as …

The Growth Of Home Schooling, Steven Alan Samson

Steven Alan Samson

We would do well to remember that a series of sixteenth century Reformations were launched with the aid of the fifteenth century printing press. We may be witnessing much the same today. The keynote in home schooling circles is a can-do attitude that seeks to instill the character that once built America and to raise a new generation to rebuild the shattered foundations of western civilization.

Gender, Sexual Orientation, And Truth-Of-Consensus In Studies Of Physical Attractiveness, James M. Donovan, Elizabeth Hill, William R. Jankowiak May 1989

Gender, Sexual Orientation, And Truth-Of-Consensus In Studies Of Physical Attractiveness, James M. Donovan, Elizabeth Hill, William R. Jankowiak

James M. Donovan

Truth-of-consensus methodology presently holds that sex differences in perceptions of physical attractiveness are negligible and may be routinely ignored during prescaling. No determination has been made in the literature of the effects of sexual orientation on this perceptual process. The data presented herein suggest that while sex and sexual orientation of judge are largely irrelevant to prescaling of female stimuli, these variables are important when judging male stimuli. In particular, male homosexuals and male heterosexuals differ significantly in ranking male facial photographs. Thus, experimenters wishing to treat attractiveness levels as known quantities should control for this difference, especially when using …
